The food supply held out through that winter, at least in the developed world. Many parts of the planet were not so lucky. People who did have enough understood it was a near thing, nearer than it had ever been before. They worried things would get worse in the future. Before another year passed, every person on the planet understood how far off their most dire predictions had been. How mild their deepest fears. Humanity would never again have so lofty a goal to fail as enough food for a modern world.
