Etan’s mother looked startled when she opened the door and saw them. Her hair was pulled back and she clutched a blue robe with pink flowers embroidered all over at her throat.
“What’s wrong with you two? Did something happen in town tonight?”
Etan glanced at Alex, and both of them snorted out laughter before they could stop themselves.
“Yeah, you could say that, Mom,” he said, fighting to keep the mad giggles from taking over. “Have you and Dad got a few minutes?”
“Of course we do. Did you two have dinner yet? I’ve got leftovers I can heat up in a couple of minutes.”
Etan locked the door without thinking about it. When he met Alex’s wide gaze, he realized what he’d done. He just took Alex’s hand and kept walking.
