Break In

678 Words
Mason “I’ll be there in fifteen minutes keep the police there,” I bark into the phone to Dixie’s security supervisor. I was exhausted but no longer do I feel drained to my last drop but now I’m sporting a headache and a gut brimming full of anger. “What’s happened now?” Aria rises from her sleep her wavy curls are a tangled mess on the side of her head, her eyes droopy with exhaustion. Leaning over I kiss the side of her cheek, breathing in her familiar cinnamon sweet scent. “There was a break-in at Dixie Headquarters. The alarm was set off about five minutes ago,” I call over my shoulder as I march to the bathroom. Grabbing my toothbrush I slab some toothpaste on before getting started on my teeth. “Fuuuuck,” she yawns. “Dibb should have been notified he’ll be sending someone over. I’ll take Isaac, John will stay here with you,” I mumble through a mouth full of foaming toothpaste, standing in the door watching as she begins throwing clothes around, thinking she’s going to come. Walking back to the sink I spit and rinse before she shouts the dreaded words I was waiting for. Who doesn’t want to argue first thing in the morning? “I’ll come with you.” “No way. You’ll stay here.” Moving to my walk-in closet I pull out the first suit and tie I see knowing ill be there through the workday. “Since when do you tell me what to do.” She argues her hands on her hips her face drawn down in a pout, her eyes twisted in distaste. “It’s three in the morning, we both have to be up and moving soon enough. Get a couple more hours of sleep and I’ll keep you updated.” I don’t want her anywhere near work not when I still have no idea what’s awaiting me. “It could be a trap Mason, I’m coming.” I don’t have to see her cute face to know she’s bound and determined. I can hear her shuffling through her own walk-in closet, her clothes are being tossed around with a steady screech of metal hangers on the metal bar as she shuffles through her closet before pulling something down and tossing it aside instead of back on the rack. She’s a freaking whirlwind and I love her anyway. “It could be that’s why you aren’t coming.” She isn’t wrong, it could be a trap it could be a bomb, a shooter, or just another stupid kid trying to break in for some extra cash. Either way, there isn’t a way I’m risking her, we take enough risk every day she stays around here. “Mason Maverick. We talked about this. I go where you go.” If she was in here that would have been a chest poker, my pec hurts just thinking about it. “Not in the literal sense Crash,” I sigh. That discussion went totally A-wol, not a damn thing came out of it but a f*****g headache. “Bullshit.” Looping my tie around I finish getting dressed while she wobbles one foot in her leggings and one foot out. “Whatever this is it’s serious I want to know you’re okay.” “Exactly why I want you in witness protection!” “Sure come with me!” Rolling my eyes I grab my smartwatch before heading towards the door. “Aria-” “You can’t and neither can I. I know. So do you, stop asking.” “Same to you. I need to go. I’ll call you when I know something. I love you.” “I love you too,” she begrudgingly mumbles following me out. “Call me as soon as you know.” John and Isaac are waiting in the doorway, John waves walking past me to watch over Aria while Isaac and I walk towards the elevator. Time to see what happened at Dixie. Again.
