Leo's been gone for months now, a few other wolves followed him. The pack had become restless but Malachite put them to work.
Malachite focused on expanding our territory, a bold move considering we had plenty already. Our neighboring packs were smaller than ours and so they easily surrendered as we began to encroach on their borders.
She then focused on business ventures and means to drive our wealth up. Not that we needed money we had been living comfortably for decades despite the humans recessions.
Our pack feared us but due to the buzz of progress it soon turned to utter respect. It hurt me that the little ones no longer ran to me but Malachite reminded me we will have our own when we find our mate.
The role of Luna weared on me and so I spent a lot of time letting Malachite take the reigns. I would go into a sort of slumber as she handled the day to day.
It was uncommon for wolves to want to interact without their wolf form, if not unheard of. She pretended to be me to avoid the scrutiny of Elded Cane as I'm sure he would've become concerned.
I had started to prefer being the one in the dark and started to lose track of days which quickly became months. I was comfortable and it felt as though I was snuggled up to Malachites fur like a pup.
And so I let myself slumber, dreaming of my parents and the life I once had.
I felt pain burn across my back which woke me from my trance. "Malachite what's wrong?" It was hard to resurface and it felt as though Malachite was trying to hold me down.
"It's okay Wren I've got this handled the pain will be gone a in a minute", she was hiding something which only peaked my curiosity.
"Why are you fighting? Who? How long has it been?" I had so many questions and I finally found our body so I surfaced.
I was staring at the most beautiful man who smelt of vanilla and sage. Mate? Why are we fighting what must be our mate?
The man looked at me he was about to attack until he realized I wasn't moving. A look of concern flashed across his face. "Why?" I managed to gasp out as the pain hit me full force.
I fell to my knees hugging my arms to my side as I tried to find where I was bleeding from. Malachite was trying to surface but she felt weak, from the fight I'm sure. Our body had taken a lot of damage so she must not have been able to no longer repress me.
Peter POV
I had finally found our mate we had business in her territory, a merger was to be formed between our two warehouses. I had heard she was unmated but didn't expect anything to happen.
Every pack in the Northern hemisphere knew of her and her pack. She was feared as she had managed to grow her land to double the size in only two years. A few packs had joined hers as they could no longer stop her from claiming even more of their territory.
Her warriors were well refined and ruthless, they had managed to get rid of thirteen rogue nests and a covenant of witches. They took no prisoners and the rogue children were given to other packs over seas.
Wren Cresent the Alpha that was forced into the role before her coming of age. I had been excited to meet her to see the beast herself. I had imagined an Amazonian like woman who wore animal pelts befitting her war mongering title.
Her people came in before her handing out debriefs and setting up for our meeting. They were quiet and professional looking, their eyes didn't shy away as our Alpha greeted them. That alone told me a lot.
Wren walked in dressed in a well tailored dress suit that accentuated her body wearing black pumps with her coat draped across her arm. Her hair was pulled back into a high pony tail which despite it being up was still halfway down her perfectly curved back. I felt an uncomfortable pressure against my pants. I shifted my weight and her eyes snapped to me I felt my wolf wanting to jump across the room. Her eyes were a mixture of blue and green she was wearing makeup that gave her eyes a foxy look. Just then her scent reached me I took a deep breath in as roses and maple filled my nose, I felt my wolf purr.
I was about to blurt out mate when she turned on her heels and walked out. Her people cleared their throats and followed after her. "Excuse us a moment."
I fought the urge to run after her, did she not feel it? We waited a few minutes before they returned, she did not. I had hoped she would but our meeting ended, the contracts were drawn up and signed.
"Will Luna Wren be joining us for a celebratory dinner?" I asked as we shook hands. They looked at each other and back at the door as though they were unsure themselves.
"Unfortunately I don't think we will be joining you for dinner but as thanks we are more than happy to cover the bill."
I wouldn't take no for an answer, "is it customary for your Alpha to not greet another when they are visiting her territory?".
They looked uncomfortable enough that I think what I said worked. "You may join us at the pack house if you want", the one said reluctantly and motioned for us to follow.
Her smell was everywhere as if she personally patrolled her own territory. My body felt as though I was drunk buzzing with adrenaline. Alpha Maxim looked impressed as we passed cabin after cabin of pack members. They seemed to be sorted by family. He could tell I was up to something but trusted me as his second in command enough to not question my motive.
After a half an hour drive through the pack village we finally reached the pack house. I jumped out of the car and ran towards the source of smell unable to contain myself.
Wren was leaning against the kitchen counter talking to some gamma about chores. Her body stiffened as I pushed the door open. She looked furious and my wolf felt her rejection. I wanted to claim her right then, she felt my intention and picked up a knife.
"Mate!" I growled, the gamma that was beside her look horrified and ran from the room.
I heard shouting and then suddenly we were surrounded. I could feel the presence of not one but four other alphas in the room. They must have been the alphas of the absorbed packs.
"I am not your f*****g mate! You're nothing but a f*****g BETA!" I flinched at her words and then she attacked me.
It took everything in me to not kill her as she kept lunging at me with the knife. I am the strongest in our pack which is why I had become our alphas second in command. Whenever she lunged I had to dig my claws in to stop the knife from stabbing me.
Despite her attempts at my life I couldn't help but feel proud of her strength and relentlessness. Wren kept coming her pack were stuck in place not knowing if they should help or not. My Alpha kept them from attacking noting that I wasn't purposely hurting her.
Finally she stops and I recognize she's having an internal conversation. Her eyes flicker from their burning hatred to one of confusion. Somehow it's as though another person was standing before me. Her pack doesn't notice but I do, I see the betrayal in her eyes as she looks at me.
"Why?" she mutters out before falling to her knees. My heart breaks as she sounded so lost and weak. Her pack instantly take her away, the betas escort us off their territory, I want to fight my way back to her. My mate.
