chapter 1: The night of betrayal
The full moon hung high in the sky, bathing the Silverfang Pack’s grand hall in its cold glow. Tonight was supposed to be the most important night of my life—the night my mate, Alpha Karan Blackwood, would claim me as his Luna. My heart pounded in anticipation as I stood near the back of the hall, my fingers curling around the fabric of my dress.
The air buzzed with excitement as the pack gathered. The scent of roasted meat and burning wood filled my senses, but I barely noticed. My wolf, Nyx, was restless inside me, her energy crackling beneath my skin. It’s time, Lyra.
I swallowed hard. I had waited for this moment since I was a child. Karan and I had grown up together, our fates intertwined by the will of the Moon Goddess. We were meant to be. At least, that’s what I thought.
The large oak doors at the front of the hall swung open, and all eyes turned toward Karan as he entered. My breath caught at the sight of him. Dressed in black, with his powerful frame and piercing blue eyes, he was every bit the Alpha he was destined to be. His presence alone commanded attention, his aura radiating dominance.
I took a step forward, a smile tugging at my lips. But then I saw her.
Sienna.
She was by his side, her long golden hair cascading over her shoulders, her hand delicately wrapped around Karan’s arm. The world around me blurred as confusion gripped my mind. My chest tightened. Why is she standing with him?
The murmurs began.
“Why is Sienna with Alpha Karan?”
“Isn’t tonight the Luna ceremony?”
I searched Karan’s face for answers, but he didn’t meet my gaze. Instead, he lifted his chin, his expression void of warmth. When he finally spoke, his voice was cold and devoid of the love I had once believed in.
“I, Karan Blackwood, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack, reject you, Lyra Evernight, as my mate and Luna.”
The world around me shattered.
A sharp, unbearable pain exploded in my chest as the bond between us began to tear. It felt as if someone had plunged a knife into my heart and twisted it cruelly. I gasped, clutching my chest, but the pain only deepened.
“No…” My voice trembled. “You’re lying. You don’t mean this.”
I turned to him, desperate for an explanation. My vision blurred with unshed tears as I reached for him, but he stepped back, as if my very presence repulsed him.
Karan’s cold gaze met mine. “I have chosen Sienna as my Luna.”
A collective gasp rippled through the room. Some of the pack members whispered in shock, while others smirked, entertained by my humiliation.
Sienna, standing beside Karan, smiled—smug and victorious. “You should have known, Lyra. Karan and I belong together. You were never fit to be his Luna.”
Rage and devastation warred inside me. My wolf howled in agony, the rejection severing our connection to the mate bond. I felt myself falling, my legs weakening beneath the weight of heartbreak.
Nyx whimpered inside me, her pain mirroring mine. No, no, no! This isn’t supposed to happen!
My hands clenched into fists. “You were my mate, Karan. How could you do this?” My voice broke as I stared at him, willing him to say this was some cruel joke.
But Karan simply turned away. “Guards,” he commanded. “Remove her from my sight.”
Strong hands gripped my arms, yanking me backward. I struggled, twisting in their grasp, but my strength was nothing compared to theirs.
“Let go of me!” I screamed, my vision swimming with fury.
But no one came to my defense. No one spoke up for me.
I was no longer their future Luna.
I was nothing.
The guards dragged me toward the doors, my heels scraping against the wooden floor. I twisted my head back, desperate for one last glimpse of Karan, but he didn’t look at me.
The moment I was shoved outside, the doors slammed shut behind me, the finality of it ringing in my ears.
I collapsed to my knees, gasping for breath. The pain of rejection throbbed through my soul, an unbearable weight pressing against my chest.
The pack had turned its back on me.
Karan had thrown me away as if I were nothing.
And I was alone.
A sharp wind howled through the trees, and I realized just how cold the night had become.
I had no home. No pack. No mate.
Tears streamed down my face as I forced myself to stand, my body trembling from more than just the cold. I turned toward the dense forest that surrounded the pack’s territory. My only option was to run.
To disappear.
I took one last look at the Silverfang Pack, the place I had once called home, before stepping into the shadows of the night.
But as I ventured deeper into the wilderness, a chilling realization settled over me.
The rejection had not only broken my heart—it had awakened something inside me.
A power I had never felt before.
And I would return.
Not as the weak, abandoned mate Karan had discarded.
But as something far more dangerous.
Something they would all come to fear.
