Chapter 5:

Irene: “I heard the hospital is expanding its branch.” Iris whispers over to me as she hands me the cup of latté. I have been hearing the rumors too, they said something about the hospital focusing on other branches, and this could give Iris and I some sort of head jump in the hospital. Iris is always joining me whenever she is off the clock, and today our shift nearly collided so she’s going to be here before she goes home. I grab the latté and give her an honest smile as I redirect my focus back on the computer screen. “I guess, this might mean something big for us.” I say and she grunts, her eyes staring down at me. “I don’t want to be transferred to other packs. I grew up in Iron Fur, there’s no way I am leaving you and Reina behind.” She smirks and I give her an eye roll. Some people are getting transferred these days and I fear that it might be my turn. Iris and I are really worried, I have spent six years here in Iron Fur and I don’t think I will be comfortable moving. A nurse walks over to me, “The chief of physicians will like to speak to you.” I rub my palms together, suddenly feeling anxious about what he is going to talk about. I take a deep breath before making my way towards his office. “Irene.” He smiles up at me, gesturing towards his seat. His office is plastered all white, some charts about the human body labeled on the wall. Dr. Grayson has been planning on retiring for quite some time now, yet he wants to see the most competent doctor to take over. “You called for me.” I take my seat, my voice near nervous. “Ah! Quite I did, so I presume you have been hearing about the rumors that we are expanding branches?” I nod immediately, “It’s really nice that our proposal got funded by some Alphas who would love our hospitals situated in their packs.” I nod at that too, suddenly feeling very giddy, I feel like something was missing in his words. “Okay, I understand that.” I keep waiting for what he would say next. “Some of our staff are being transferred to represent the hospitals in other packs, and I want you to know that the decision was in the hands of the boards but nothing to worry about, your housing would be clearly funded.” He explains, pulling out a folder from under his cabinet. “I clearly understand this.” I say. “Alright, I know that you have been here for two years now, but I am elated to say that you are being transferred to a branch in another hospital.” He says, smiling brightly. My heart race is picking up, an unknown feeling washes over me. I am getting transferred to another pack? But, I like it here so much. Why do I have to get transferred? “What pack did I get transferred to?” I forced myself to ask, there was no point in smiling, I don’t really feel happy right now. “Mystic River pack in Puerto Rico.” The moment he says it, my world crumbles, time stops for a moment. My face pales as I stare at him blankly. No, no, no....This can’t be. I can’t go back to my old pack, this really can’t be happening. I left all dark memories behind six years ago; going there would bring back all the hurt and pain, seeing Leonard married to that woman with kids would surely crush my heart. “Can’t I get transferred to another pack? Please?” I sound desperate, I can go anywhere but mystic river pack, I just can’t deal with the heartbreak. “I am sorry, Irene, but the Alpha of the dark moon pack is helping us establish the hospital there, there’s not much I can do. You don’t have much of a choice unless you want to tender your resignation, I actually thought you would be happy going there.” I will be happy if I don't get to meet Leonard and start to remember what he did to me. I would be happy if I didn’t get to go back to the pack that brought all those pain and heartbreak. “Thank you.” I said dejectedly as I stood up from the chair and walk out of his office, I took the hall that leads to the lounge, tears burning in my eyes, my shoulders quivering, pain cackling within me as though I was repeating the events of what happened that day. “There’s someone here to see you.” One of the nurses hurriedly says to me as she enters a patient’s room. Who’s here to see me? Honestly, I really don’t know anyone in this pack aside from Iris and Tyler; still I clean my tears with my sleeve and muster up the courage to go see that person. The moment I stepped into the main hall, I froze. Golden blonde hair and those dark green eyes remained the same, Leonard was here, in the hospital I worked. Beside him was my twin brother, Alejandro. The moment his dark emerald eyes met my glossy gray ones, he growls and step further.
