CHAPTER 1- HOW IT ALL BEGAN
CHAPTER ONE: How It All Started
I'm a sucker for love, which is quite ironic because love has always seemed so far away from me. Just as I was trying to get over the gruesome murder of my parents, I lost my only sister, Alia.
Alia was everything to me. She was so young and carefree and, yes, extremely beautiful.
" Ria, could we go make sandcastles now?" She would always say every now now and then. Then she'd pout and scream pretty please through her soulful blue eyes. No one could say no to that!
I loved her so much it hurts now, the pain I feel is so intense that tears well up in my eyes again. I hate this. I get so immersed that I don't realize my doorbell has been ringing for quite some time.
Almost immediately, my phone rings and brings me back into reality. I shake for a little bit, obviously startled, and then as I'm about to pick up the call, I hear my doorbell ring again. It's my best friend calling but I decide to go to the door first.
Peeping through the door (because you're never too careful in Kiyome), I realized it was a delivery man. I opened the door and received the package. It's pizza! This immediately lightens my mood.
"Sign here please"
I got the pen shakily, signed, and muttered a thank you under my breath.
On getting back inside, my best friend has called at least a hundred times!
I called back immediately and I got a text from him.
"Been trying to reach you all day, hope you're fine…Enjoy the pizza, Your best friend, Troy
A smile lit up my face and I was now grinning ear to ear.
Troy is my best friend and I've known him since 7th grade. He's the closest to family now. We've been through a lot together; depression, and acne. We even dated at some point, but have decided to be platonic friends now. The feelings are there. Alright, but we've chosen never to explore them again.
My doorbell rang again. I'm certain it's Troy. Who else would ring at my door in this manner, long pressing and releasing control? Troy can be a pain in the butt sometimes.
As I open the door, Troy hugs me.
"How's my favorite human doing? " he says in a sing-songy voice.
"Don't let Clara hear you " Clara is Troy's very annoying girlfriend. Quit the judgment. Every best friend of the opposite gender always hates the person their best friend is dating, yada yada, but in this case, Clara is a real piece of work. Yes, I said it.
" Clara knows you're my number one."
"Haha, very funny"
How was your day, milady?
What stuff are you on? Coke?
Troy bursts out laughing and grabs a piece of pizza.
I beat it down.
"Ouch, that hurt!
Oh really? I said sarcastically.
"But I bought …"
It's mine now".
Seen the news?"Some animals attacked the local tourist guide, it's messy.
I didn't know how to react. I was devoid of any form of sympathy.
"Too bad," I said non-emphatically.
"I had a dream we dated again, Ria."
" Must have been a nightmare"
Ladies and gent, I'm not going to lie, dating Troy was the best thing that happened to me. He was nontoxic, a lady's man, and very loving, but I channeled my love elsewhere. I channeled him the hurt I felt. I was absent so much that it strained the relationship. I mean one person can only maintain a relationship for so long. Troy, however, was a very patient person and I had to opt out of the relationship because I was hurting him more and more and it was only a matter of time before I lost him completely. I had to make do with being friends with him.
"Thank goodness you ordered pizza, I have nothing in this house".
"I know, I'm your knight in shiny armor," he said with a wink. No wonder Clara hates me, I say in my mind, not knowing I've blurted out.
"What did you say?" Troy asked with a smirk.
Umm, nothing" I said with a half smile.
"I thought so too."
I am put on the TV and I see the news from the local tourist guide again.
"My life is enough tragedy, I can't stand this, want some water, Troy? , I go towards the fridge in the corner of my living room
"Nope, but one beer will do."
"You're not getting drunk on my watch and, besides, who's driving you home? "
"I can spend the night here," Troy says with his mouth half-full of pizza.
"The hell you are, go home, Clara misses you" I teased him playfully.
"We're fighting"
"Of course, what is it this time? She hates you calling me Ria? I laugh out on saying this cause I feel the sarcasm is a bit too much.
Troy laughs too.
"She thinks we're too close."
I could understand her position. I mean Troy is the best. He's important for my mental health but I feel like I'm so selfish that I don't want to share
"Ria, what if….
"Don't even think about it, Troy. "
"I know that you're going through a lot but it's been only a year since we broke up."
"And that's enough time for you to have moved on."
As much as Clara and I did not get along, she deserved love too.
Troy goes completely silent after this painful conversation. I knew he was really hurt, but dating him again would only cause him more pain. We watch documentaries before he leaves.
"Goodnight bestie"
" 'Night"
We hug and he exits the door. Once again, I'm plunged into my lonely existence.
I have a warm bath and look through my tiny closet to decide what to wear for work tomorrow. I'm a sales representative for a major pharmaceutical company in Kiyome. Not the fancy job I'd always envisioned, but something has to pay the bills.
I lie on my bed now and sleep away my sorrows.
A dog barking dead in the night is something I was used to but this one felt different so I immediately sat upright on my bed.
Trying to go back to sleep, I heard an unmistakable scream. It was my neighbor, Mr Peter. He was about 60, divorced, and lived alone.
I went towards my window and peeped. I saw the most gothic site ever. He was surrounded by three very unusual men, all dressed in black.
One of them, presumably the leader, punches him and flings him across the street.
I made a muffled sound, terrified, and ran from the window towards the bed, scrambling for my phone to dial 911 I ran towards the window to see what'd become of the poor man.
"What's that?", the shortest of the three says
"Probably nothing ", the leader says and stares directly in my direction.
I freeze, literally
"Should I go check it out?"
"Don't worry, I'll handle it myself "
I turned towards my phone to dial 911 for just a second and looked up to see what was happening and they were nowhere to be found. They just disappeared into thin air.
I canceled the call and dialed the only person I had left in the world.
"Troy, please come quickly". I hung up and placed a second call.
"911, what's the emergency?"
I hear a sound on my window pane. I don't know when I screamed my lungs out.
The police siren blaring on my street was the best thing I have heard since my little sister's first cry. The police van drove right to the front of my courtyard and three police officers, well dressed, including a woman, came out of it. I quickly scampered down the stairs, and up to the front door.
"I saw everything, they probably killed him," I say, gasping for breath.
On saying this, I ran towards my neighbor's front yard.
"Oh my God", I shouted with my hands covering my mouth.
The officers ran towards me and pointed their searchlights at Mr Peter.
I retreat, I'm tired of gory sites. I have had a fair share of them.
One of the younger officers turns him over and tries to assess his pulse
Nothing
"He's dead, he says, turning to us.
" Young lady, you said you saw everything, I'm inspector Maurice. These are my colleagues, Officers Mira and David. We'd like to ask you a few questions if you don't mind.
"We should probably get inside. It's freezing out here. Hope that's fine by you, the lady officer says
I'm so dazed by the entire situation but I start walking towards my house. The officers walked closely behind me.
