CHAPTER 006

CHAPTER 006 Theo leaned against the doorway, arms crossed over his chest, an amused smirk curling his lips. “Oh, did I forget to mention that?” His voice carried a teasing edge. Kyra’s breath hitched, her jaw going slack. He said it like it was nothing. The fact that he was an Alpha—one of the most potent beings of their kind—was just a minor detail. Her stomach churned. How had she not seen it? His control, presence, and dominance all made sense now. Her fingers curled into fists at her sides. She should have known better than to trust someone so easily. Yes, he had been kind. Gentle, even. But now, she wondered if it had all been an act. Theo wasn’t just any man. He was an Alpha. And that changed everything. Her wolf, however, was restless with excitement. “He’s our mate,” it purred. “A strong, powerful mate.” But Kyra wasn’t as quickly swayed. She had spent years fighting to prove herself, years being looked down upon because she wasn’t strong, fast, or ruthless. And now she was expected to submit to an Alpha? Her gaze flicked to Evangeline, who stood rigidly a few steps away, eyes burning with open hostility. “What’s her deal?” Kyra muttered under her breath, narrowing her eyes. Theo turned slightly, his gaze following hers before returning with amusement twinkling in his eyes. “You’re wondering who she is to me, right?” His voice was smooth, unreadable. Kyra’s stomach twisted again. He could read her. He could read her thoughts. Her lips pressed into a thin line. She’d think he enjoyed watching her squirm if she didn't know any better. She straightened her spine. “Well?” Theo chuckled. “She’s my Delta.” Kyra’s eyebrows shot up. “Your Delta?” She turned back to Evangeline, noticing the sharp angles of her face and the way her fists clenched at her sides. “She doesn’t seem happy about my presence,” Kyra said, crossing her arms. Evangeline let out a sharp, humorless laugh. “What gave it away?” Theo sighed, shaking his head. “Enough of this.” His tone was final, leaving no room for argument. “A guard will take you to your room. Freshen up, then come down for lunch.” Without waiting for her response, he turned and strode up the second staircase, disappearing into the unknown. Kyra was left standing there, her thoughts a tangled mess. A guard appeared behind her, already taking her suitcase. She trailed after him, but not before catching a glimpse of Evangeline making her way up another staircase, her expression unreadable. Kyra clenched her jaw. Something about that woman felt… off. She wasn’t just a Delta. There was something more. The guard stopped before an elaborately designed door and set down her suitcase. Without a word, he turned to leave. “Thank you,” Kyra called after him. He hesitated, glancing over his shoulder. A flicker of pity passed through his gaze before he walked away. Kyra frowned. What was that about? Pushing the door open, she stepped inside and gasped. The room was stunning. She had grown up in luxury, but this… this was something else entirely. The walls were adorned with elegant gold accents, a grand chandelier hung from the ceiling, and the large and inviting bed was draped in the softest fabric she had ever seen. Excitement bubbled in her chest as she rushed to the bed, flopping onto it with a content sigh. For a moment, she let herself enjoy the softness beneath her. Then she rolled onto her side, eyes drifting toward the closet. Curious, she got up and swung open the doors—only to freeze. Inside, hanging neatly, were clothes. Her clothes. Every single item was something she would have picked for herself. Her heart pounded. “How…?” A sinking feeling twisted in her gut. Someone had planned this. Someone had prepared this room specifically for her. And she had an extreme suspicion that someone was Theo. Theo stood in his private training room, rolling his shoulders before reaching for the sword hanging on the wall. The blade was familiar in his grip, an extension of himself. Evangeline knocked once before stepping inside, her presence a silent weight in the room. “The mission was a success, Alpha,” she reported. “He’s in our custody. We followed your instructions.” Theo didn’t respond. He turned toward the training dummies, lifting his sword with ease. The room was silent, save for the sharp sound of his blade cutting through the air. Evangeline’s eyes lingered on him, tracing the lines of his arms and his back. She had admired him since she was brought to him from the slave market. Admired him. Craved him. But he had never looked at her the way she wanted him to. And now, there was Kyra. Her blood boiled. Theo spoke through the mind-link, his voice calm yet firm. “Take Kyra her lunch.” Evangeline stiffened. “What?” “You heard me,” he said, not bothering to look at her. “I don’t care what you think. She’s not your equal. Remember that.” Rage flared in her chest. She wanted to refuse. But she knew better. Theo had never tolerated disobedience. Without a word, she turned on her heel and stormed out of the room. Theo smirked as he watched her leave. She was predictable. And easily manipulated. Kyra had just finished soaking in the bath when a knock came at her door. She wrapped herself in a bathrobe, padding over to open it. Evangeline stood there, a tray in hand, her expression carefully blank. Behind her, a trembling maid kept her head down. “Your lunch,” the maid stammered. “Where should I put it?” Kyra’s gaze flicked between the two women. “At the center table,” she said slowly. The maid hurried inside, setting the tray down before practically running out of the room. Evangeline didn’t move. For a long moment, they just stared at each other. Then Evangeline smirked. “Enjoy this while it lasts,” she said quietly. “You won’t be here forever.” Kyra’s hands clenched. “Get out.” She slammed the door in Evangeline’s face. A satisfied growl rumbled in her chest. But even as she turned back toward her food, her stomach churned. Something wasn’t right. Late that night, Theo stood in the underground chamber, a gun pressed against a man’s forehead. “I’ve signed it,” the man pleaded. “I did everything you asked. Please, just let me go.” Evangeline held up the signed document, waiting for Theo’s command. He smirked. “I’m not feeling merciful tonight.” He pulled the trigger. The body crumpled to the floor, blood pooling beneath him. A gasp echoed from the doorway. Theo’s smirk faded. Slowly, he turned. Kyra stood there, eyes wide with horror, hands trembling. She had seen everything. Theo sighed. “I was expecting her to find out,” he murmured. “Just… not this soon.” Evangeline watched in silent satisfaction as Kyra bolted, her footsteps echoing down the hall. Theo wiped the barrel of his gun against his temple, frustration flickering across his features. “Clean this up,” he ordered before stalking out of the chamber. When he reached Kyra’s room, he found her shoving her clothes into her suitcase, panic in her every movement. “You’re off to where exactly?” His voice was calm. Almost amused. Kyra froze. She turned, eyes wild. Theo leaned against the doorframe, watching her with quiet satisfaction. “Where do you plan to go?” he asked. “The house that burned down? Or did you already buy a new one with my frozen money?” Her breath caught. “You…?” His smirk deepened. “Do not worry, your little head, mate,” he murmured, stepping closer. Her back hit the wall. His voice was softer now. Darker. “Get on the bed, Kyra.”
