Chapter 14: The Family Divide

932 Words
Craig barely slept that night, his mind restless with questions and doubts. What would the Duchess say to James? Would she try to convince him to end things? Or worse—issue an ultimatum? The weight of their relationship, both beautiful and burdensome, felt like a ticking clock. Yet, as each day passed, Craig’s resolve grew stronger. He had come this far and wasn’t willing to give up now. The following morning, Craig received a text from James: “Meet me at our spot by the lake.” The words were simple, but Craig could sense the urgency in them. He grabbed his coat and made his way to the lake, his heart racing with anticipation. James was already there, sitting on a bench, looking out over the water. His normally relaxed posture was stiff, his face shadowed with a mixture of exhaustion and determination. Craig approached him slowly, knowing something serious had happened. Without looking up, James began. “They… didn’t take it well. My mother and a few others. They see you as a threat, Craig, someone who doesn’t fit in their carefully curated world.” He turned to face Craig, his jaw clenched. “They think this relationship jeopardizes my duty and legacy.” Craig took a seat beside him, reaching out to hold his hand. “What did they say?” James exhaled, running a hand through his hair. “They issued a warning. If I want to continue seeing you, I’d have to sacrifice certain privileges. Access to certain family estates, specific duties… even financial allowances. They said they’d make an ‘example’ out of me.” A surge of anger rose within Craig. The idea of a family wielding power over James, dictating his life for the sake of appearances, felt archaic and cruel. “Are you okay with that?” Craig asked softly, his voice tinged with both concern and pride. James looked into his eyes, his gaze unyielding. “Craig, they could take away everything, and it still wouldn’t change how I feel about you. But this isn’t just about us anymore. They want me to end things because they think I’ll eventually cave under the pressure.” Craig felt a mix of awe and fear. The reality of what James was willing to give up was staggering. “James… I don’t want to be the reason you lose everything.” James shook his head, a hint of a smile breaking through the tension. “Losing you would be the only real loss.” He paused, his voice softening. “They also gave me a set of rules to follow if we stay together. Protocols, appearances, things they claim are essential for ‘the image.’” Craig raised an eyebrow, feeling the defiance bubbling within him. “Royal rules, huh? Let me guess—no public displays of affection?” “Exactly,” James replied, nodding. “No public affection, no casual dates where people might see us, and definitely no social media. They want everything discreet, as if by hiding you, they can somehow make this less real.” Craig took a deep breath, absorbing the weight of these rules. Every new restriction felt like a barrier between them, an attempt to control and stifle their love. But instead of feeling discouraged, it ignited something within him—a determination to be worth every single sacrifice James was making. “So, what do we do?” Craig asked, meeting James’s gaze. James’s smile softened. “We play by their rules—for now. We keep things quiet, we stay under the radar. But one day, when we’re ready, we’ll tell our own story, our way.” Craig smiled, a sense of hope blooming within him. “Fine. Let’s do it. We’ll follow their rules and their protocols. But we’ll do it together.” --- The weeks that followed were a test of patience and resilience. They grew accustomed to stolen moments and careful glances, to quiet dinners in dimly lit corners and secluded spots on campus where they could just be themselves. They adapted to this secret, undercover life, turning each brief encounter into a treasured memory. Despite the limitations, their bond only deepened. They shared their dreams and fears, even planning what their lives could look like once the world finally accepted them. But the secrecy weighed on Craig. Every smile, every laugh felt incomplete because they couldn’t fully share their love with the world. One night, while studying together in the shadows of the library stacks, Craig looked at James, the dim light casting shadows across his face. “Do you ever feel like you’re living a double life?” James sighed, nodding. “Every day. It’s exhausting, and sometimes I wonder if I’m being fair to you.” Craig reached over, placing a reassuring hand on his arm. “You’re worth it, James. Whatever sacrifices we have to make, they’re worth it. One day, things will change.” In that quiet moment, Craig felt the truth of his words. There was a strength that had grown between them—a promise that they would endure this struggle together, no matter how long it took. But as Craig looked into James’s eyes, he felt a flicker of fear. They had committed to a difficult journey, one that would test them in ways neither of them could fully anticipate. And while the road ahead was uncertain, Craig knew one thing for sure: he wouldn’t give up on this love, even if it meant facing the full force of the royal family’s wrath.
