Chapter 1: Meeting at Cambridge
The brisk autumn wind swept across the manicured lawns of Cambridge, stirring up the leaves like whispers from old secrets. Craig adjusted his scarf and pulled his coat tighter, wondering if he’d ever grow accustomed to the English chill. He walked through the sprawling campus, marveling at the centuries-old buildings and the students passing by, some with books, others laughing in tight-knit groups. This was his first day of lectures, and while he couldn’t deny the thrill, he also felt a strange pang of loneliness in this ancient place.
"Excuse me, are you lost?"
Craig turned at the voice. Standing before him was a young man with bright blue eyes and tousled chestnut hair, dressed in a smart coat and scarf that somehow looked effortlessly regal. The stranger smiled, his gaze curious but warm.
"Oh, no, I mean... maybe just a little," Craig replied, offering a sheepish grin. "First day here, trying to find the lecture hall for Economics."
The young man chuckled, extending a gloved hand. "Well, in that case, let me be of service. I’m James—Earl James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten Windsor, officially, but you can just call me James."
For a moment, Craig was taken aback. An Earl? Here at Cambridge, offering directions like an ordinary student? He quickly composed himself and took James's hand. "Craig T. Fuyane. Just Craig."
"Nice to meet you, just Craig," James quipped, his grin widening. "The Economics building is this way, actually. I’ll walk with you."
They strolled together, discussing their studies and exchanging tidbits about their backgrounds. James shared stories of his large, extended family and the expectations that came with being born into a title, while Craig spoke about his dreams and the journey that had brought him from South Africa to Cambridge. Despite their differences, Craig found himself drawn to James's down-to-earth manner and quick wit.
By the time they reached the lecture hall, they were laughing like old friends. "So, when’s our next adventure?" James asked as they parted ways.
Craig shrugged, pretending nonchalance. "Guess we’ll just have to see where fate leads us."
Little did they know, that one question would be the beginning of countless adventures to come.
