Chapter 15: A Dangerous Encounter

938 Words
The university semester continued with its steady rhythm of classes, studying, and whispered conversations. Yet, amidst the ordinary, Craig couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched. It was as if the royal family's reach extended even into the university corridors, where the pressure was subtle but omnipresent. One afternoon, after a long lecture on economics, Craig was walking back to his dorm when a tall, stern-looking man in a dark suit appeared seemingly out of nowhere. He positioned himself directly in Craig’s path, his expression unreadable but with a faint, intimidating smile. “Mr. Fuyane,” he greeted smoothly, his accent clipped and precise. “Would you spare a moment of your time?” Craig’s heart raced. He instinctively took a step back, but the man remained calm, his hands clasped behind his back. “Who are you?” Craig asked, forcing his voice to stay steady. The man’s smile remained fixed. “Think of me as… someone who’s here to remind you of the weight of your actions.” He pulled out a small envelope and extended it to Craig. “This is a letter from the family. They wanted you to receive it personally.” Craig hesitated, but eventually reached out and took the envelope. He could feel the man’s gaze on him, cold and calculating. “Please understand, Mr. Fuyane,” the man continued, his voice lowering, “the royal family expects a certain level of respect for their wishes. Relationships like yours are… delicate matters.” Craig’s stomach twisted as he heard the veiled threat in the man’s words. But he held his ground. “If you’re trying to intimidate me, it won’t work. James and I aren’t breaking any laws by being together.” The man chuckled, a hollow sound that sent a chill down Craig’s spine. “Perhaps not laws, Mr. Fuyane. But the rules of tradition, reputation, and honor carry a weight of their own.” With that, he tipped his head politely and turned, disappearing down the path as abruptly as he had arrived. Craig clutched the envelope tightly, feeling a strange mixture of anger and fear. He returned to his dorm, his hands shaking slightly as he opened the letter. Inside, he found a formal note written in immaculate handwriting: --- Mr. Fuyane, We understand that your intentions toward His Grace, Earl James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten Windsor, are sincere. However, we must remind you of the importance of tradition, duty, and the legacy of our family. Any continued association with His Grace will be met with consequences, as the stability and reputation of the crown remain paramount. Consider this a final reminder. Respectfully, The Royal Council --- Craig’s heart pounded as he read the letter. He had expected resistance, even warnings, but this was something else entirely. The words were a reminder of the powerful forces he and James were up against—forces that would stop at nothing to protect the sanctity of their legacy. That evening, he met James in the secluded corner of the campus library, his mind still racing from the letter. He handed it to James, watching as he read it, his jaw tightening with each word. “This has gone too far,” James muttered, his voice filled with anger. “They’re crossing lines that should never be crossed. I’ll talk to them.” But Craig stopped him, his hand on James’s arm. “James, I don’t want this to spiral. They’re trying to scare us, to make us feel like we have no place in this world together.” James’s eyes softened as he looked at Craig. “I don’t care about their threats. You’re worth more than all of this—more than any title or tradition. I won’t let them bully us.” Craig smiled, though a pang of worry tugged at his heart. “I know. But we need to be careful. They’re not going to stop, and if we push back too hard, who knows what they’ll do next.” James nodded, clearly torn. “Then we’ll play along for now. But they can’t control our lives forever. One day, we’ll live openly, without fear.” They sat together in silence for a while, the weight of the letter settling over them. In the quiet, Craig felt both the strength and fragility of what they shared. The stakes were higher than he’d ever imagined, but he knew he was prepared to face them as long as James was by his side. --- Over the next few days, Craig found himself glancing over his shoulder, half-expecting another encounter with the man in the suit or another letter of warning. But instead, there was silence. It was as if the royal family had stepped back, watching from a distance, waiting to see if their threat would be enough. But as days turned into weeks, something else happened—Craig and James began to feel a renewed freedom, a sense of resilience in the face of their challenges. Each moment they shared felt like a triumph over the forces that wanted to tear them apart. Every whispered conversation, every stolen glance, became a small act of defiance. One evening, as they walked together by the lake, James pulled Craig close, his voice filled with quiet determination. “Whatever happens next, Craig, I’m with you. This isn’t just a romance. It’s a promise.” And as they stood there, wrapped in the safety of each other’s arms, Craig felt that promise echo deep within him—a vow of love, loyalty, and defiance that no threat could ever break.
