Chapter 11: A Royal Ultimatum

718 Words
The following day, Craig found himself walking to his next lecture with an uneasy sense of urgency. James hadn’t contacted him since they parted the night before, and that encounter in the vault lingered like a shadow over them. Just as he was about to enter class, his phone buzzed. Meet me in the courtyard after class. Urgent. Craig’s heart raced. James’s cryptic message didn’t reveal much, but he sensed the urgency. His thoughts drifted through the lecture, imagining every possible scenario until the final bell released him. He made his way to the courtyard, his pulse quickening with every step. There, beneath an old oak tree, stood James, his posture tense. The look in his eyes was somewhere between defiance and worry, a storm brewing just below the surface. “I’ve been summoned,” James said quietly as Craig approached. “Summoned?” Craig’s brow furrowed in concern. James nodded. “By the family. They’re demanding a meeting about us. It’s like they already know, Craig. They’ve been watching, waiting for me to slip up. Last night must have triggered something.” Craig swallowed, feeling the weight of what this meant. The royal family didn’t extend casual invitations, especially not for meetings like this. They were preparing to challenge their relationship directly, to force James to choose between his duty and his heart. “Are you sure you want to go?” Craig asked gently. James took a deep breath, reaching for Craig’s hand, squeezing it briefly before letting go. “I don’t have much choice. If I refuse, they’ll see it as defiance—and that’ll only make things worse for us. But…” He hesitated, his eyes searching Craig’s for strength. “Whatever they say, whatever they try to enforce, I’m not backing down. We both deserve a chance.” Craig’s heart swelled with pride but was laced with worry. “Just… be careful. I’ll be here when you get back.” James nodded, his face softening with a warmth reserved only for Craig. He turned and walked toward the car waiting to take him to the family estate, leaving Craig with a mix of anxiety and determination. --- Hours passed with agonizing slowness. Craig tried to focus on his assignments, but his mind kept returning to James and the potential consequences of their love. It wasn’t just about protocols or traditions; it was about their futures, tied together by the risk they both willingly shouldered. Finally, late in the evening, Craig’s phone buzzed. Meet me at the lake. Craig hurriedly made his way to the lake, feeling his heart race with every step. The moon hung high, casting a pale glow over the water. As he approached, he saw James sitting on the shore, a silhouette against the shimmering surface. James looked up as Craig approached, a tired but resolved expression on his face. “They gave me an ultimatum, Craig. Either I walk away from you and continue my duties, or… I follow my heart and accept the consequences.” The weight of those words hung heavily in the air. Craig’s breath caught, his pulse pounding. “What… what did you say?” Craig asked, his voice barely above a whisper. James took a deep breath, his gaze steady. “I told them I’d follow my heart. I told them that you were worth every consequence.” For a moment, neither spoke. Craig felt an overwhelming rush of emotions—pride, love, fear. They were on the edge of something monumental, a decision that could change both their lives irrevocably. “They warned me,” James continued, his voice soft. “If we’re going to be together, it means a different life. A life with fewer privileges, more scrutiny. They’ll do everything they can to make things difficult.” Craig reached out, his hand resting on James’s. “I don’t care about any of that. I just want you.” James smiled, his eyes glistening under the moonlight. “Then that’s all I need.” They sat together in silence, letting the enormity of their choice settle between them. They both understood the challenges ahead, but in that moment, all that mattered was each other. They had made their choice, and whatever trials lay ahead, they would face them together, side by side.
