Chapter 5: Christmas at Windsor

785 Words
As the holiday season approached, Craig found himself both excited and anxious. He and James continued to grow closer, their time together punctuated by shared laughter, long conversations, and quiet moments that held more than words could say. They hadn’t labeled whatever was between them, but Craig knew it was something deeply meaningful, something he was willing to protect. Just a few days before the term ended, James invited Craig to spend Christmas at the Windsor estate. “It’ll be a bit grand,” James admitted with a self-conscious smile. “But it’s also… home. And I want you to be there.” Craig accepted without hesitation, his heart racing with anticipation. He wanted to understand this other side of James, the life he came from. But he was also nervous about meeting more of James's family, uncertain about how they would receive him. When he arrived at Windsor, the estate was breathtakingly festive, adorned with garlands, twinkling lights, and a massive Christmas tree standing proudly in the grand foyer. Craig was awestruck, trying not to let his amazement show as he took it all in. James greeted him with a warm smile, then gave him a quick tour of the manor, showing him rooms filled with centuries-old artifacts, family portraits, and towering shelves of leather-bound books. Craig felt as though he’d stepped into another world, a place steeped in history and tradition. Later that evening, they joined James's family for a formal Christmas Eve dinner. The dining room was filled with laughter and lively conversation, the air warm with the glow of candlelight and the aroma of holiday dishes. Seated beside James, Craig felt a strange mixture of familiarity and foreignness—he was a guest, but James’s gentle smiles and reassuring glances made him feel like he belonged. Midway through the meal, James’s father, the Duke, turned his gaze toward Craig. “So, Craig,” he began with a curious expression, “James tells us you’re from South Africa. You must miss the warm Christmases back home.” Craig smiled, nodding. “I do, sir, but this has been a wonderful experience. And it’s an honor to be here with your family.” The Duke studied him for a moment before offering a polite nod. “You’re a long way from home, young man. It takes character to pursue your ambitions so far from everything familiar.” “Thank you, sir,” Craig replied, feeling both proud and slightly on edge. He could sense the subtle evaluation in the Duke’s tone, as if he were weighing Craig’s worthiness, and Craig wasn’t entirely sure where he stood. After dinner, James and Craig retired to the library, settling into two armchairs by the fire. The crackling warmth filled the room, and they each held a glass of wine, basking in the cozy silence. “That wasn’t so bad, was it?” James asked, his tone light but with a trace of concern. Craig chuckled. “Not at all. Your family’s actually been very welcoming… even if I can tell your father’s still sizing me up.” James sighed, running a hand through his hair. “He means well, but he doesn’t always know how to show it. He has these… expectations, and I know he worries about me.” Craig reached across the space between them, placing a reassuring hand on James’s arm. “You don’t have to be anything you’re not, James. I’m here with you because of who you are, not because of your title or family name.” James smiled, his eyes softening. “You have no idea how much that means to me.” They sat in silence for a while, watching the fire dance in the hearth. Finally, James spoke again, his voice low and vulnerable. “Sometimes, I wonder if there’s a place for me outside of all this. Outside of duty and family obligations.” Craig looked at him, his gaze steady. “There is. And you’ll find it, James. I think… we’ll find it together.” In that quiet moment, Craig realized just how deeply he felt for James. It was more than just friendship or attraction; it was a bond he couldn’t put into words, a connection that ran deeper than anything he’d ever known. As they exchanged soft smiles, Craig knew that this Christmas would forever hold a special place in his heart. The grand halls of Windsor had been intimidating at first, but now they felt warm and inviting, like a place where dreams and hopes could take root. And maybe, just maybe, it was the beginning of a future that neither of them had expected but both of them were ready to embrace.
