“Do you really believe everything was a mere car accident? You know it very well, you went there to chase that motherfucker, and the next day you’re found in the hospital. There’s more to this than it looks like. And I’m not going to stop until I find him.”
That was not a mere accident?
Who would do that to me then?
The person I was looking for?
If he knew why I was there, then he’s watching me the whole time I was looking for him.
“Keith.”
“Yeah?”
Kevin left after an hour of catching up with Keith. He had left a word that he’s working hard to find who did it to her, and it’s making her worried for his safety. Though Kevin is a trained cop, the suspect has been free for the whole 18 years, and k********g women without getting caught. He knows his way.
The whole case has eaten her entire system the whole day, until Dr. Darren visited on her room to ask her some questions related to her recovery. Until then, her mind is not into the question and is still lurking on the case.
Darren was asking her question and has not received an answer. He had to call her by her name to pull her out of her thoughts as she looked at him completely startled.
Darren noticed she was not into the conversation and thinking about something else which was frustrating him, too.
“I was asking you if you have ever experienced dizziness the whole day?”
“I haven’t”, Keith answered right away and Darren noted it on the record.
“Headache?”
“None.”
“Body pain?”
“None.”
“Vomiting?”
“None.”
“Any other abnormal-
“None. I’m pretty much normal the whole day”, she replied, not letting him finish his question. Darren nodded and decided not to make a fuss about it, though he’s starting to lose his cool as well, but calmly noted everything on the record.
“Any memories flashed to your head?”
It was a question that Keith paid more attention compared to the previous questions she was asked of. She looked at Darren with a confused face as if she was not expecting such question to be asked.
“I thought you told me that was a permanent memory loss. Why are you asking me a question when you know the answer yourself?”
“I was just asking. There’s always a margin of error. Who knows, miracles happen at rare times, and it could happen to you.”
“Well, I’m not fond of rare possibilities. How does my tests go?”
“You’re recovering quick, but we’ll have to see the following days. If this kind of progress continues, I’d say you’ll get discharged after a week”, he said with the record on his hand while Keith nodded as a response.
The atmosphere went quiet while Keith went back to her own world with thoughts piled up high on her head, Darren was left standing on her hospital bed and staring at her as she stared at nothing.
“I’ll take my leave now, the nurse will come to you an hour later for your medicines”, he announced his departure and started walking out when Keith was pulled out of her thoughts again.
Left-handed women?
20 years old?
“Can I ask you a question, doc?”, she asked out of the blue while looking at his back. Darren stopped walking and turned to his back to see Katie staring right at him with eagerness on her eyes. It seemed to him she was going to ask her an important question or something like it. A heavy talk, he said inside his mind while he searched around the room to look for a chair.
“You mind if I grab a chair to sit on before I hear the question?”
Keith was not expecting his response and nodded, out of words as she responded to him.
He quickly walked and got himself a chair, carried it beside the hospital bed, and took a seat. He placed the medical records on the table and set himself on the chair comfortably as if preparing for a competition while Keith watched him make a fuss over it with great confusion.
“So, what’s your question?”, he finally asked after a minute of preparing. Though she was puzzled with his actions, she shrugged the weirdness of him first and asked the question.
“What’s so special about being on your 20s?”
It was not the kind of question he was expecting, and raised an eyebrow for a second as he processed on the random question she was asking him. It was confusing, but despite of it, he answered the question.
“What’s so special of being in your 20s, is that your body is at its greatest form. You can perform a lot of activities without getting tired as much as you would when you’re getting older or younger. Your maturity and mental health is definitely at its best, what else? It’s the golden age. Why are you asking me that kind of question?”
“What’s so special about left-handed women?”
“Your question is getting weirder. You don’t mind if I ask why you want to know about these things?”
“Let’s just say, curiosity”, she answered shrugging her shoulders while Darren chuckled as she says it.
“I’ll think of it as a confidential information, I’m not allowed to ask. That way, it would make sense”, he answered and Keith agreed without hesitation.
“So what’s so special about left-handed women?”
“There’s no special thing about being left-handed if you ask me. Neither does being right-handed. But difference, there might be. Left-handed people have the greater ability in logic and mathematics, language, compared to right handed ones. On the other hand, creativity and arts are dominated more by the right-handed people.”
“That’s it?”, she asked, a little dismay of the answer she received. She was expecting something useful, or something that would give her an idea why the suspect targets left-handed women. Apparently, it’s not as easy as it is.
She’s a left-handed person herself, but she can’t tell exactly what’s so special of being a left-handed.
“There are other differences, but they’re not really that important. You’ve got any other questions to ask?”
“That was it.”
“I see. I guess I’m off now”, he said and once again, stood from the seat, took the records on the table and started walking out of the rooms but stopped at a wall to take off something.
“I’m confiscating this dartboard anyway. You’re not allowed to paste something on the hospital promises”, he said and took the dartboard away.
“Hey! That’s not fair!”, she disagreed and as quickly as she could, got out of bed, trying to get the dartboard out of Darren’s hands but he was quick to raise his hand up. He was a lot taller than her, which means that the dartboard is out of her reach, and to get it off of him without a chair is impossible. Keith took a step backward and crossed her arms on her chest as she gave him a plain look while he did the same.
“Fine. Let’s have a deal. If you can get this dartboard from me, without using a chair or any platform. I’ll let you keep this on the wall”, he said, sounding confident while Katie lit up her face and raised a corner of her lips to give him a smirk.
“You sure about that?”
“You can’t use a chair, or any platform-
“I don’t need that”, she said cutting him off, and without any warning, took a step forward and raising her right leg up, jumped and made a roundhouse kick to the sky as high as she could kicking the dartboard in his hand.
He was not expecting it and while his hands held the dartboard without the right grip, he had lost it as soon as her foot kicked the board. It went flying, and perfectly landed on the bed without a sound.
Keith managed to stretched a proud smile after able to pull a roundhouse kick despite of her situation and went to the hospital bed to grab the dartboard, leaving Darren stoned near the wall.
“Confidence, is always a losing factor”, she said and sat on her bed with the dartboard on her hand.
She looked at him with the smile still plastered on her face.
Not a second after, she felt a warm liquid running down her nose and unconsciously wiped it with her hands and quickly saw the blood on her hands. She made an ‘ooh’ expression for a moment and calmly grabbed some tissue to wipe her bleeding nose while Darren walked to her and helped her make the bleeding stop.
“Raise your head”, he said calmly, and she did what she was told.
Raised her head, facing the ceiling while Darren grabbed some tissue and wiped the blood of her nose until it stopped bleeding, and she was free to put her head down again.
She was just yet to blink, when a finger flicked her forehead all of a sudden and Darren looking at her in frustration.
“Aw! What the heck was that for?”
“You just had a major operation two months ago, and your stitches are not fully healed. What kind of patient does a roundhouse kick, one day after she has woken up from coma?”
“Are doctors allowed to flick their patient’s forehead?”
“Yeah they can, if it’s needed”, he answered without hesitation and Keith scoffed a chuckle in sarcasm.
“That was needed?”
“I was putting your brains in the right places with a flick so they work the right way”, he said in the same sarcastic tone she had used against him.
“I have never met a doctor like you”, she said not amazed, but Darren only responded her statement with a sarcastic laugh.
“What a coincidence! I have never treated a patient like you either.”
Keith was irritated at that point while he looked at him in disbelief, her hands slowly travelled at her back and grabbed a pillow, throwing it at him as quick as she could, but he was quick to catch it before it hit his face, and gave her a plain look.
“What the? Have you learned martial arts?”
“No, but I learned about the rights of a doctor, and I can confidently say you are not allowed to hit one. You should get some rest”, he plainly said and returned her pillow to her without any further words as he walked out of the room, leaving Keith in awe.
She was still speechless of how he treated him, and continued staring at the door of the room where he exited. It opened right after some seconds and Darren’s head peaked in.
“Right, I’m one of a kid doctor, and I could be a one of a kind boyfriend. Would you want to check it out”, he teased her further and closed the door right before she could say anything at him.
“What a d**k!”
