CHAPTER — 1 THE GLIDED CAGE
The story belongs to Elena Bass who had always known her life was different. Not because she lived in a mansion bigger than most hotels, or because the windows of her home had bulletproof glass. No— her life was different because she loved like treasure... and guarded like the target.
The morning sun's warm—golden light came in through the tall windows of the Bass Mansion and landed on her velvet curtains. Elena sat at her piano, gliding her fingers over the keys as a slow melody filled her quiet room.
Music was the only thing that made her world normal. It felt calm, gentle and secure.
Until a door opened behind her.
"Elena," Lucian's calm and cold voice said. "Father wants you in his office."
She turned her head slightly.
Her older brother leaned against the doorfame, dressed in a black shirt, the sleeves were rolled up, tattoos peeking from his forearm. Lucian Bass was elegance carved from danger— sharp jawline, unreadable expressions and eyes that never miss anything.
"What happened? Is something wrong?"
Elena asked him gently.
Lucian didn't say anything for a moment.
His gaze flicked to the guards standing outside the music room— two men carrying weapons under their suits. They straightened when Lucian's eyes passed over them.
"Just go," he said in a softer tone.
"He is waiting."
Elena nodded, smoothing her cream— coloured dress as she stood.
she moved through the long corridor.
Chandeliers that looked like stars hung over her head. The whole place felt very luxurious with each step. She lived in a place full of wealth, but she sometimes thought that it was just a different kind of cage.
At the end of the hall, the big wooden door was open a little. Low—tense voices could be heard inside.
Victor Bass, her father, was not merely a man. He was a legend in New York's underground. The kind of man whose name opened doors— and buried enemies.
Elena inhaled slowly and stepped inside.
Victor Bass sat at a dark wooden desk. Papers spread before him, a glass of whisky untouched. His grey and dark hair was around his face. He looked handsome, strict and like a leader.
When he looked at her, those sharp brown eyes softened.
"Elena," he said "we need to talk."
And Elena instantly knew that something was wrong.
Elena stepped closer, her fingers were curling nervously at her side.
Victor Bass only used that tone when something serious was coming—something that would probably change her life.
She sat down nervously. " Father... what happened?"
Victor studied her for a long moment before speaking. " you have now twenty-one years old. you have grown into a woman with grace, intelligence...and a heart too gentle for this world." He exhaled deeply. " A world I no longer want you to be a part of."
Elena's brows pulled together. She had heard this before — his constant fear, his constant attempts to hide his daughter from the blood their family spilled. But there was something in his voice today that sounded final.
Victor continued, "I have made a final decision for your future. One that ensures your safety."
Her brother, Lucian, entered in the office quietly, taking a place at the wall.
A shadow followed him— And a man appeard.
Jaxon Bass.
The wildfire of the family and... Elena's second Brother.
Messy deep black hair, a scar across his eye brow , a jaw that stayed clenched. He looked like violence personified — and he stared at Elena like she was already in trouble.
"What did she do now?" Jaxon muttered.
Elena shot him a look. "Nothing."
Victor lifted his hand, silencing both.
"This is not about what she did. It's about protecting her future."
He folded his hands on the desk.
"I have arranged a marriage."
Elena's heartbeat stopped.
For a moment, she didn't even breath.
"A marriage?" she whispered.
Lucian's expression didn't change — he'd already known.
Jaxon rolled up his eyes dramatically.
"Finally."
Elena's stomach twisted. " Father, with who?"
Victor leaned back in his chair.
"Adrian Cole. A businessman. Clean and Respected. From a powerful corporate family. He can give you a peaceful life— far from our world"
A bad, heavy feeling started in Elena's chest.
Adrian Cole.
she'd met him once. Polite, distant, hollow, He had smiled at her the way a man smiled at an object he intended to possess.
"I don't want this," she said softly.
Victor's jaw tightened. " Elena... this is the only way I know you'll be safe."
Safe.
Protected.
Caged.
Elena's throat burned.
"Father," she whispered, " you can protect me without forcing me to marry someone I don't love."
The whole room got in silence.
Victor Bass — the man feared by half of New York — suddenly looked older, wearier, as if the weight of protecting Elena had carved lines into his soul.
"Elena," He said quietly. " Love has no place in our world. Caring for someone is a weakness enemies exploit. I won't let anyone use you to hurt the family."
Her eyes stung.
"Then teach me to be strong." She whispered.
"Don't lock me anyway."
Victor's eyes snapped to hers—sharp, pained.
"You were never meant to be the part of this life," he said. " Not the bloodshed. Not the violence. Not the wars. You deserve to stay in peace. And I will give you that, even if you hate me for it."
Elena's breath trembled.
She Loved her family so much, she truly did. But she felt that the air tightened around her, the walls of the Mansion closing in.
Jaxon scoffed from the back.
"she is lucky. Adrian Cole is rich, stable and Boring.
Perfect for her."
Elena stared at him. " You don't get to decide what's perfect for me."
Jaxon smirked. " Someone has to. You have lived in a palace your whole life. You don't understand the Danger."
Elena stood up so fast that her chair scraped the floor.
"Then let me understand it," she said, her voice trembling but fierce.
"Stop treating me like I'm made of glass."
Lucian's eyes flickered —surprise? Respect? It was hard to tell.
"Elena," he said softly. " This world always destroys the good things. Father is trying to keep you safe and protected."
Her throat tightened, but she shook her head.
She turned to leave, but Victor's voice halted her.
"Elena," he said in a gentle voice this time, "Adrian Cole will be here Tomorrow evening. I expect you to behave."
Her heart dropped.
Tomorrow ?
Already?
"I don't want this," she repeated but her voice got cracked.
Victor closed his eyes briefly — as if her pain hurt him more than the bullets ever could.
"The discussion is over."
Elena felt something inside her break.
She walked out of the office without saying a single word, the guards stepping aside as she passed.
Her hands shook, breaths uneven.
Lucian called after her softly, "Elena."
But she didn't stop.
Couldn't stop.
Because for the first time in her life, Elena Bass felt truly trapped — and she didn't realise the outside these gates...
Someone had already noticed her.
A stranger with cold eyes.
A stranger who had saved her once.
A stranger who wasn't supposed to exist in her world at all.
Someone who would soon shatter her glided cage completely.
