Chapter 10: New Family?

2252 Words
Stephen and I had been ‘together’ for a few days now and I’m not going to lie, this new Stephen is weird. Good weird. I was used to the player side of him. The one that would ask me to cover a meeting or finish a document because he was too busy doing someone... literally. I was used to the flirty side of him, of course, he didn’t flirt with me back then because he wasn’t exactly my type but look where that went. Anyway, I’ve seen him flirt with the waitresses at the parties the company used to host or him hitting on anything that moved. But this, him now, it was different. I knew he was caring but now he’s showing it more, he even opened up to me about why he became that person. He was affectionate and he made sure to show it to me every time he got the chance. We still didn’t have our special night together because it was a little uncomfortable thinking of it with a baby inside me, so, we postponed that. Honestly, I could see him and I actually working out in the future, though he still didn’t ask me to be his girlfriend, but why should I care. What we have right now is just perfect.   Later that day, I got a call from the investigator I was in contact with regarding Stephen’s accident. Luckily, they were able to move forward with the case with evidence showing up now and then, and I was hoping that the next time I got a call from them would be to tell me that they have a suspect of who it could be. “Hello?” I answered the phone after checking the caller’s ID. "Yes, good morning Ms. Adams. I called to inform you that we have a suspect and he’s here in the precinct, so it would be good if you could come here with Mr. Malcolm.” He talked. I hadn’t told Stephen about how I’ve been working on his case since he obviously didn’t care and wanted to move on without having to think about who wanted to kill him, that is if he knew that this was the case. I’m the only one that knew that the accident wasn’t an actual accident. That it was intended to injure him. "Yes, I’ll see if Mr. Malcolm can accompany me. Thank you.” I told the officer and hung up the phone. Of course, ‘Mr. Malcolm’ couldn’t accompany me. He didn’t know what was happening. It was almost lunchtime when I got the call from the officer, I took my purse and left the office. When I arrived, the same detective took me to the interrogation room and we stood in a room that separated us from the alleged criminal with a two-way mirror, so I could see him but he couldn’t see me. The officer had asked me to stay there while he interrogated the man in handcuffs in front of me.  I was really nervous thinking of what I might hear after this and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. No one knows about this and I for sure can not tell Stephen since he clearly wants to move on, but it’s not easy to give up the thought of things never going back to the way they were. “What’s your name?” the officer asked to make sure the polygraph was working. They had wires connected to his body to determine if he was lying or telling the truth, however, I wasn’t sure I was going to get what I came in here for. “John Collard.” He answered without looking up. The officer sitting on the machine signaled that he was telling the truth, then he continued asking him the questions that needed to be cleared up. “What did you do for a living?” The investigator asked standing next to the polygraph. “I’m a personal bodyguard and driver.” He answered looking up with a very serious face. I could see that he was a little older than me. Maybe in his late thirties but not more that’s for sure. “And how did your accident with Stephen Malcolm happen?” he finally questioned. “Who is Stephen Malcolm?” he asked like he didn’t know his target. Both interrogators turned to the paper in front of them to check how truthful his answer was, I didn’t understand how it worked so I was waiting impatiently to know the answer. “Don’t lie.” The officer slammed his hand on the table and the handcuffed man flinched. “I was ordered to kill him by my employer.” He answered directly. He was so fast to throw his employer under the bus that I was wondering if he was threatened into it. If he were a real criminal, he would’ve resisted a little more but he directly gave in. They checked his response and it came back as true, so they continued the interrogation and asked who it was. “I don’t know. She asks me to call her Mrs. Mal.” He said and I was confused, who the hell was Mrs. Mal. His answer was true and I left that room even more muddled than when I went in. Mrs. Mal? Was ordered to kill? Why would anyone want to kill Stephen? When the suspect was sent away, the investigator that was leading the case pulled me aside and started telling me about how they’ll track his employment registry and maybe get closer to who this ‘Mrs. Mal’ is. Honestly, I knew that this interrogation was useless, I’m not sure if Stephen or even Lea know this person, but whoever it is, I want them to pay. And at least we know it’s a female so I’m guessing that helps. Though with Stephen’s history with girls I wouldn’t be completely surprised if he hurt one of them and she turned out to be a psycho killer. I went back to the office after lunch and got back to work still thinking of what happened at the precinct. My head was spinning with thoughts that I didn’t notice anyone come in. “Anyone here?” I heard someone say so I flinched out of my daydreaming and followed the sound to find Lea standing in my office with her hands on her hips with a smile on her face. “Sorry Lea, it’s just that…yeah.” I couldn’t tell her what was going on so I hoped she won’t ask questions and luckily after a couple of seconds she dodged the subject and sat down in front of me. “So? How’s life?” She asked with a smirk on her face. I was looking at her with raised eyebrows because the way she asked the question was very weird, though, I realized what she was talking about and I chuckled and leaned back on my chair. “Life…is good. Though I wouldn’t call him life just yet.” I answered her from behind my desk. “Yet? Don’t get my hopes up.” She laughed. “Anyway, spill the tea. How was the date?” She asked with her elbows on the table and her face resting on her palms cupping her cheeks. She looked like a 6-year-old waiting to be told the Cinderella story. “Well, it was simple and nice,” I answered her trying to keep it short. “Screw you, give me the dirty stuff.” She waved off my answer and re-placed her face between her palms. “Lea! I’m pregnant with your baby, we definitely did nothing more than a kiss.” I replied to her creeped out at the fact that she wanted to know this stuff about her brother. “Good, I don’t want my baby's first sight to be his uncle’s penis.” She leaned back on her chair and my face went red instantly. I never thought of having s*x with Stephen, not once, and then there’s his sister telling me about it. While Lea and I were in the middle of a conversation, her brother comes in with a down face and I knew something was wrong. I looked at him with a furrowed face and when Lea saw my facial expressions change, she turned and saw her brother standing.  “Hey brother.” She stood up to greet him and kissed his cheek as he faintly smiled at her. “What’s wrong?” I asked not saying ‘hello’ as I didn’t feel like it was even necessary because of the vibe of the room. “Nothing, just a…rough day.” He said with his hand around his sister but still looking at me. “I think I will leave you two alone.” Lea sensed the tension and left the room after she was done speaking. I stood up and went to him to ask him the same question again because I thought that maybe he didn’t want to make his sister worry. However, I got the same answer back. He held my hands and kissed me on the forehead. “Dani came.” He finally confessed and I stepped back. “She came in and started saying stuff and acting like we were dating and didn’t leave me the chance to say anything about us.” He said obviously annoyed. The last thing we needed was Dani interfering so the worst thing to do was to tell her about us in the first place. “No! Don’t tell Dani about us. She’ll go crazy and start doing things like she did the first time.” I told him stepping back a little bit more. “What did she do?” He asked crossing his arms. “She came to my house and told me to stay away from you and to thank me, I guess because you kissed her and she knew about your ‘no kissing or loving a woman’ rule. You were so angry at me that night that you did what you do best.” I was explaining to him when I noticed from his gaze that he was elsewhere. “I had s*x with her.” He said directly after I was finished talking. “Yeah, but why is it bothering you so much?” I asked curious about what got him spacing out like that. He looked at me and tried to change his face’s expression and said that it was nothing serious. He was about to leave but I took my chances and asked him about what I had heard in the police department today. “Who is Mrs. Mal?” I asked before he left and he stopped his tracks and turned to face me. “I don’t know anyone with the name ‘Mrs. Mal’.” He replied trying to remember if he did in fact know someone with that name but he didn’t. I just nodded and he left after that and I was back to square one. A couple of weeks later, I walked into Stephen’s office so that we could go to lunch together as he promised and I saw Dani there. “Oh, look who it is Stephi.” She said with that annoying voice of hers. Stephen's face when he saw me was very unsettling like he wished I never came. “Baby, did you tell her the good news?” She looked at him crossing her legs. I stood by the door waiting for whatever the ‘news’ was so that I can leave and not listen to her anymore. Stephen didn’t answer and I was getting impatient, though his face clearly showed that it was nothing good. His back was completely pressed against the chair with a hand grabbing the arm of the chair and the other fidgeting with a pen and this entire time he wasn’t even looking at me. “Oh, Stephi come on!” She talked again. She stood up to walk around the desk and place her hands on Stephen’s shoulders.  I was already mad at her calling him ‘baby’ and now this? “You’re not the only pregnant woman in this room Oli.” She said and my eyes widened. She’s pregnant. “And Stephi is the father.” She squealed and I was so mad that tears started forming in my eyes so I left the room. He got Dani pregnant. Out of all the women, he stuck his p***s in he chose Dani to have a family with.
