Chapter 6: The first Move

The transition from a quiet personal assistant to the wife of a billionaire happened too fast. Clara stood in front of the full-length mirror, staring at her reflection. She was wearing a midnight-blue silk gown that hugged her curves perfectly—a dress handpicked by Ethan’s personal stylist. On her neck hung a delicate diamond necklace that felt heavier than it actually was.

Tonight was the annual Vance Enterprises Gala. It was her first public appearance as Clara Vance, the substitute bride.

​A sharp knock broke her thoughts. The door opened, and Ethan stepped into the room. He was wearing a perfectly tailored black tuxedo. For a split second, his eyes widened as he looked at her, his gaze lingering on the way the blue silk caught the light. But just as quickly, his usual cold mask returned.

​"Are you ready?" Ethan asked, his voice low and commanding. "The media is waiting outside the venue. Every reporter, investor, and rival family will be watching your every move. One mistake, and they will see right through this marriage."

​Clara took a deep breath, smoothing down her dress. She turned to face him, her eyes calm and resolute. "I’ve managed your chaotic schedule and angry board members for two years, Ethan. I think I can handle a few cameras. Just make sure you hold your end of the bargain."

​Ethan walked closer, stopping right in front of her. He reached out, his leather-scented warmth enveloping her as his fingers gently adjusted the diamond pendant on her collarbone. His touch sent a sudden, unexpected shiver down her spine.

​"Confidence looks good on you, Clara," he murmured, his dark eyes locked onto hers. "But remember, don't get too comfortable in this world. We are playing a game."

​"I know the rules," she replied softly, refusing to back down from his intimidating stare.

​Ethan offered his arm. Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second before slipping her hand through it. As they walked out of the room together, Clara knew that once those gala doors opened, there was no turning back. The game had officially begun.
