The billionaire's Crisis
Chapter 1: The Billionaire's Crisis
The air inside the top-floor office of Vance Enterprises was cold enough to freeze water, but it had nothing to do with the air conditioning. It was the man standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass window.
Ethan Vance.
At twenty-eight, he was the youngest billionaire to dominate the country's shipping and real estate industry. He possessed the striking features of a runway model—sharp jawline, dark piercing eyes, and a physique that looked lethal even under a tailored charcoal-gray suit. But behind that handsome face was a heart made of pure ice.
Clara held the tablet tightly against her chest, taking a quiet breath to steady her racing heart. As his personal assistant for the last two years, she had learned to read the subtle shifts in his posture. Right now, the tension in his broad shoulders screamed danger.
"Read it again, Clara," Ethan’s voice cut through the silence, dangerously low and smooth.
Clara swallowed hard, looking down at the tablet screen. "The... the text message from Miss Victoria’s camp, Sir. It says she boarded a private flight to Paris three hours ago. Her manager confirms she has no intention of returning for the wedding this Saturday."
A heavy, suffocating silence followed. The wedding of the century was supposed to happen in four days. It wasn't just a romantic union; it was a multi-billion-dollar merger between Vance Enterprises and the prestigious Henderson Group. Stocks were at stake. The media was already buzzing.
Ethan slowly turned around. His dark eyes locked onto Clara, making her knees feel momentarily weak. "She ran away." It wasn't a question. It was a cold realization.
"Yes, Mr. Vance. We've tried contacting her family, but they are claiming they don't know her whereabouts," Clara reported professionally, trying to keep her voice from trembling.
Ethan walked toward his massive mahogany desk, his movements slow and calculated like a predator tracking its prey. He didn't look panicked. He looked furious. "The media will have a field day. The board members will panic. The Henderson merger will collapse if there is no wedding this Saturday."
"Should I prepare a press release stating the wedding is postponed due to... health reasons, Sir?" Clara offered, her fingers hovering over the tablet to draft the statement.
"No," Ethan snapped, stopping just inches away from where she stood. He was so tall that Clara, at her petite height, had to tilt her head all the way back just to look at him. She could smell the faint scent of his expensive cedarwood cologne.
"A postponement is a sign of weakness, Clara. The Vance family does not show weakness," Ethan said, his gaze dropping to her face. He stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, his eyes scanning her features—her wide, expressive eyes, her neat hair, and the quiet dignity she always carried despite how hard he pushed her at work.
Suddenly, a strange, calculating look crossed Ethan’s face. "How long have you worked for me, Clara?"
"Two years and three months, Mr. Vance," she answered, blinking in confusion. Why was he asking about her employment now?
"You know my schedule. You know my family. You know the Hendersons. You know exactly what this wedding requires," Ethan murmured, taking another step closer. The proximity was dizzying.
"Yes, Sir. I organized the catering and the guest list myself."
"Good." Ethan leaned against his desk, crossing his arms. "Then you are perfectly qualified for the job."
Clara frowned slightly. "The job, Sir? Miss Victoria’s replacement assistant?"
A ghost of a cold, smirk appeared on Ethan’s lips. "No, Clara. As Miss Victoria’s replacement bride."
Clara’s heart stopped. The tablet in her hands nearly slipped to the floor. "I... I beg your pardon, Sir?"
"You heard me," Ethan said, his voice completely devoid of emotion as if he were simply proposing a new business acquisition. "You will marry me this Saturday. We stay married for exactly one year until the merger stabilizes. After twelve months, we will file for a quiet, amicable divorce."
"Mr. Vance, that's insane! I am your secretary!" Clara gasped, dropping her usual professional filter.
"And you are also the daughter of a man who owes fifteen million pesos to the bank, with a family home that is scheduled for foreclosure next month," Ethan countered smoothly, pulling a thin folder from his desk drawer. He had already researched her.
Clara froze. Her breath hitched in her throat as a wave of harsh reality hit her. Her father’s failed business had left their family drowning in debt. She had been working double shifts, saving every penny, just to keep a roof over her mother and siblings' heads.
"Sign the marriage contract, Clara," Ethan said, sliding a document across the table toward her. "I will clear your father’s debt by noon today, buy your family a new house, and pay you a monthly stipend of half a million pesos for the duration of the marriage."
Clara looked at the document, her heart hammering against her ribs. It was a lifeline wrapped in a golden cage.
"And if I say no?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
Ethan stepped closer, his dark eyes trapping hers, leaving her no room to run. "Then by tomorrow morning, your family will be on the streets, and you will be looking for a new job. Choose wisely, Clara."
