Chapter 5: The Lion’s Den By 7:30 PM, the black Mercedes-Benz was winding up the cobblestone driveway of the Vance Estate, a sprawling, colonial-style mansion tucked away in the city’s most exclusive enclave. Clara stared out the window, her hands tightly clasped in her lap. She barely recognized herself. The stylist Ethan hired had transformed her. Her wild hair was tamed into a sleek, elegant low bun, and she wore a sophisticated, emerald-green silk midi dress that complemented the heavy diamond resting on her finger. She looked like she belonged in high society, but inside, she felt like an imposter waiting to be caught. "Stop twisting the ring," Ethan’s deep voice cut through the silence of the backseat. "You’ll make it obvious that you're not used to wearing it." Clara froze, quickly dropping her hands. She turned to look at him. Ethan looked devastatingly handsome in a tailored midnight-blue suit, his dark hair perfectly styled. He looked completely unbothered, as if they were just heading into another routine board meeting. "I can't help it," Clara whispered, her voice tight. "Your mother is Eleanor Vance. She used to run a multi-million dollar charity foundation and she handles the board of directors like a drill sergeant. If she looks at me for too long, she’s going to see right through this." The car came to a smooth halt in front of the grand entrance. Ethan turned his body toward her, leaning in slightly. The familiar scent of his cedarwood cologne instantly enveloped her, a strange anchor in the midst of her panic. "Look at me, Clara," he commanded. She met his dark, intense eyes. "Eleanor Vance is sharp, yes, but she is also obsessed with control," Ethan said, his gaze unwavering. "She expects me to marry a woman she can manipulate—a socialite from a family she can trade favors with. By choosing you, I’ve taken that control away from her. She will try to provoke you to see if you'll crack. Don't let her." Before Clara could reply, the driver opened the door. Ethan stepped out first, then turned around, offering his hand to her. Clara took a deep breath, slipped her hand into his, and stepped out of the car. The moment her feet hit the pavement, Ethan pulled her close, anchoring her arm through his. "Remember," he murmured against her ear, his breath warm against her skin, "you love me. I adore you. Let's begin." The heavy oak doors of the mansion opened, revealing a grand foyer with a crystal chandelier that dripped luxury. Waiting for them at the end of the hall was Eleanor Vance. At sixty, the matriarch of the Vance family was the epitome of cold elegance. Her silver-streaked hair was styled into a flawless coif, and her sharp, gray eyes immediately locked onto Clara, scanning her from head to toe like a hawk inspecting its prey. "Ethan," Eleanor greeted, her voice smooth but devoid of maternal warmth. She extended her cheek for a brief, superficial kiss from her son before turning her full attention to Clara. "And you must be Clara. The assistant who managed to capture my son’s notoriously elusive heart." The emphasis on the word assistant was subtle, but it cut through the air like a knife. "Good evening, Mrs. Vance," Clara said, forcing her voice to remain steady. She held out her hand, but Eleanor didn't take it. Instead, the older woman's eyes dropped significantly to the three-carat diamond on Clara's finger. "An emerald cut. Quite a bold choice for someone of your... quiet background," Eleanor remarked, a polite, venomous smile playing on her lips. "Come, dinner is served. Your father and sister are already waiting in the dining room, Ethan." Clara’s heart missed a beat. Sister? Ethan hadn't mentioned a sister. As they followed Eleanor into the grand dining room, Clara felt Ethan’s grip on her arm tighten just a fraction. Sitting at the long mahogany table were two people. An older, stern-looking gentleman who could only be Richard Vance, Ethan's father, and a beautiful young woman with a sharp, familiar smirk. "Well, well, well," the young woman said, standing up and crossing her arms. "The big brother finally brings home his little secret. I must admit, Ethan, when mother told me you were marrying your secretary, I thought it was a joke." "Personal assistant, Victoria," Ethan corrected coldly, his voice dripping with ice as he guided Clara to their seats. "And I suggest you watch your tone in front of my fiancée." Victoria Vance chuckled, her eyes flashing with mischief as she looked at Clara. "Oh, don't worry, big brother. I’m just fascinated. After all, Clara and I have technically met before. Don't you remember, Clara? Last year, when you had to apologize to me for booking the wrong hotel suite in Milan?" Clara felt the blood drain from her face. The memories of a frantic, exhausting week from a year ago flashed through her mind—a week where Victoria had thrown a massive tantrum over a scheduling error and demanded Ethan fire the assistant responsible. Ethan hadn't fired Clara, but he had made her apologize in person. Beside her, Ethan remained perfectly calm, leaning back in his chair. "A minor administrative error from the past, Victoria. But since Clara is going to be the future Mrs. Vance, I suggest you get used to apologizing to her from now on." A tense silence fell over the room. Eleanor watched the exchange with a calculating look, while Richard Vance merely sipped his wine, observing the chessboard. "Let's not dwell on the past," Eleanor spoke up, her voice ringing out like a judge’s gavel. She signaled the staff to begin serving the soup. "I am more interested in the present. A sudden engagement, no public announcements, and a wedding planned in a matter of months. Tell me, Clara... how exactly did my son propose? Because knowing Ethan, I highly doubt there was any poetry involved." All eyes at the table turned to Clara. Clara felt a sweat break out under her silk dress. This was the moment. If she stumbled over her words, the Vance family would tear her apart. Under the table, she felt a warm, heavy hand rest on her thigh. Ethan’s fingers squeezed her knee gently—a reassuring, silent command to stay grounded. Clara took a breath, looked directly into Eleanor Vance's icy gaze, and forced a soft, romantic smile to her lips. "There wasn't any poetry, Mrs. Vance," Clara said, her voice steady and clear. "But it was perfect. We were working late in his office, just like any other night. I was handing him a budget report, and when he took it, he wouldn't let go of my hand. He looked at me and said that he couldn't imagine a single day of his life without me by his side—either in the office, or at home. He didn't ask me to marry him. In true Ethan fashion, he told me we were getting married." A low murmur passed through the table. Victoria looked annoyed, while Eleanor’s eyes narrowed slightly. Ethan laughed softly—a sound so warm and natural that it sent a shiver down Clara's spine. He lifted his hand from her thigh, bringing it above the table to weave his fingers through hers, lifting her hand to press a soft, lingering kiss against her knuckles. "I’m a businessman, Mother," Ethan murmured, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Clara, filled with an intensity that looked terrifyingly like love. "When I see something invaluable, I don't risk losing it. I lock it down immediately." For a split second, looking into Ethan’s eyes, Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. The lines were blurring. The lie felt so real, it was dangerous. "Fascinating," Eleanor said softly, breaking the tension. "An invaluable asset. Let’s see how well you handle the assets of this family, Clara. Because next week is the annual Vance Autumn Gala. The entire board, the media, and our competitors will be there. And you, my dear, will be co-hosting it with Ethan." Eleanor leaned forward, her smile sharp enough to draw blood. "Let's see if you can still play the part when the whole world is watching."
