Chapter 1 – The New Semester
The gates of St. Helena’s College creaked open, letting in the tide of students rushing back for the new semester. The campus looked ordinary enough in the morning light—ivy climbing the old brick walls, the buzz of chatter in the courtyard—but Aanya felt something different in the air, something colder than it should have been for August. She adjusted the strap of her backpack and scanned the familiar faces. Friends were waving, professors walked briskly across the path, and laughter echoed through the halls. Everything seemed normal. Almost too normal. Her best friend, Meera, appeared beside her, smiling. “Finally! One more year closer to escaping this haunted place.” Aanya laughed, but the word haunted stuck in her head. Rumors had always followed the college—stories whispered about students disappearing, about shadows moving in locked classrooms. No one ever proved anything, of course. The official record said accidents. But Aanya had grown up with enough instinct to trust her unease. They headed toward the auditorium for the welcome speech. The grand old hall loomed at the center of campus, its wooden doors scarred by years of use. Aanya paused before stepping inside. A sudden shiver ran down her spine, as if invisible eyes were watching her. Inside, the crowd was already gathering. That’s when she noticed him— A boy sitting alone in the last row, half hidden in the shadows. His head was slightly bowed, dark hair falling across his forehead. He wasn’t talking to anyone, not even pretending to. For a reason she couldn’t explain, Aanya couldn’t look away. Meera nudged her. “Staring already? Who is he?” “I… don’t know,” Aanya whispered. The speech began, but she barely heard it. Instead, her eyes drifted again and again to the boy in the back. His gaze flickered up once, catching hers across the hall. For a split second, she felt as if he knew something about her—something she hadn’t even said aloud. The sound of the principal’s voice snapped her back. “Welcome to the new semester! We look forward to a bright, safe, and successful year…” Safe. The word echoed in her mind. Because deep inside, Aanya already knew this year would be anything but safe.
