She pushed her dark hair behind her ear, glancing at her phone. The message from her best friend had been simple: Can’t wait to see you! But something felt off, an instinct that had been nagging at her since she woke up.
As she turned the corner, a flash of movement caught her eye. A sleek black car pulled to a stop just ahead, its windows tinted so dark that she couldn’t see inside. For a moment, the world around her faded, and all she could focus on was the car, an odd chill running down her spine.
“Hey, Sophie!” a voice called, snapping her back to reality. It was Jenna, waving from across the street.
Relieved, Sophie smiled and hurried over, but the moment she stepped onto the crosswalk, the black car’s engine roared to life, blocking her path. Her heart raced as the vehicle slowly rolled forward, stopping just a few feet from her.
“What the—” Jenna began, but before she could finish, the door of the car swung open, revealing a man with sharp features and an air of danger. He wore a tailored suit that seemed to fit him like a second skin, and his gaze was piercing, as if he could see straight into her soul.
“Get in, Sophie,” he commanded, his voice smooth yet authoritative.
“Who are you?” she asked, a tremor of fear creeping into her tone.
“I’m here to protect you,” he replied, but his smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Trust me, you need to come with me.”
Panic surged through her. “I don’t know you! I—”
“Now!” The word was a low growl, an order that brooked no argument.
Sophie hesitated, her instincts screaming at her to run. But as the man stepped closer, she caught a glimpse of the tattoo snaking down his forearm—an intricate design that matched the emblem of a notorious crime syndicate she had heard whispers about.
“Get in the car, or I’ll make you regret it,” he said, his tone icy, sending a chill through her.
In that instant, she felt trapped between the impulse to fight and the paralyzing fear that gripped her. She glanced back at Jenna, who looked equally bewildered, and in that moment of hesitation, the man reached out, his hand grasping her wrist like iron.
“Enough games,” he said, pulling her toward the car.
“Let her go!” Jenna shouted, her voice breaking.
But Sophie was already being forced into the back seat, the door slamming shut behind her with a finality that sent terror coursing through her veins. The man slid in beside her, his presence dominating the small space.
“Who the hell are you?” she demanded, her voice shaking.
“Luca,” he said simply, a glint of amusement dancing in his eyes as he observed her fear. “And you’re about to understand just how dangerous this city can be.”
As the car peeled away from the curb, Sophie’s heart raced. She was trapped, thrown into a world she didn’t understand. Panic surged, but beneath it all, a spark of defiance ignited within her. She might be in his grasp, but she wouldn’t go down without a fight.
“Why are you doing this?” she asked, her voice steadying.
Luca turned to her, a calculating look in his eyes. “Because you’ve seen something you weren’t supposed to. And I can’t let you walk away.”
Sophie swallowed hard, the weight of his words crashing down on her. She had stumbled into a nightmare, and the only thing she knew for certain was that her life would never be the same again.
