Arrest my Gaze
Set to- "Knowing God"
Meditations on His Beauty~ Part 3
Who is this lover that I should gaze
And be arrested by His voice and eyes?
That I should seek Him and embrace
To hold as a priceless bridal prize?
What can cause bloom to my affection
When Beauty's Maker remains hidden?
Why do I only seem to find the light strokes and trace
When I have seen the visual in comparison to His invisible face?
He bids me seek Him out and love Him greater
For at His wondrous art I was not meant to linger
Great is my surprise then, when Beauty with upturned face
Is lost in the wonder of her Maker's grace
Selah
I hear the powerful mysteries
And beauty in their art
A hundred different stirrings
Sound the chords of my heart
Yet, though awesome is their skill and strength
Drawing my eyes to this frame of sod
Yet revelation bids me confess at length
That worship alone belongs to our God
I cannot deny the beauty full in face
That stirs my soul and enraptures my gaze
For a moment, all understanding is lost in the embrace
And an ancient mystery so strong causes it to fade
But then, in the midst, my soul finds the answer
When my heart meditates
That the Potter, Composer gives all these things shape
The music of her laughter
The living light in her eyes
Framed by her flowing hair
(And a perfect smile)
Stirs mortal fountains to rise
Where can we find the One accountable
Who mysteriously purposed this wonder
And give His work to be seen so fair?
Open my eyes that I might grow
For I do not see as I ought to see
Never knowing as I ought to know
Prizing what is fading; it is idolatry
O cursed are the mirrors that we hold and bring
Glorifying ourselves as goddesses and kings
Are we self-created?
Was this all by chance?
Yet we have lifted ourselves against the God
Who holds our breath in His hand
We are delivered and yet we take credit
Imago Dei: We are made in His image
Our lives are mirrors set to reflect His character
Purposed to glorify Him by finding in Him our pleasure
O may I grasp more than just a trace
I would have all that I might wholly embrace
To dive into portals that are locked to my ways
Bring me an answer that will end my chase
For these wonderful mysteries make my heart upset
Like a building that stands in testimony to its architect
And many are attracted and curious to know
So may Your works inspire me
To seek and follow wherever You go
My Savior, take Your hand
And lift my eyes to You
Teach that I may understand
That You are worthy
To be whole-heartedly pursued
I have sought to save myself
By leaning on understanding my own
But today (and daily) I will die to myself
That, unhindered, I may follow where You go
Though I gaze into beauty, full in face
Help me not glorify what is passing away
(My eyes see yet my heart instructs differently)
All that exists is purposed to guide us
In giving Him praise
The Creator and Designer of our fragile frames
Send grace to remove my blinders
And heaven's flame to renew; inspire!
My flesh be purged and the Spirit replace
And let all that within me bless His Holy Name
O God of Mercy, teach me
To worship You! Amen
