Ch1 - The Rejection That Changed The Realm
The full moon hung high above the Kingdom of Mooncrest, bathing the royal courtyard in silver light. It should have been the happiest night of Aurelia Blackrose's life. Instead, it became the night that shattered her world. Hundreds of wolves gathered beneath the ancient Moon Altar, their voices buzzing with anticipation. Noble families lined the marble walkways, warriors stood at attention in polished armor, and members of the Mooncrest Council watched from the shadows with unreadable expressions. Aurelia smoothed the deep sapphire gown she had sewn herself. Her dark blonde hair fell in soft waves down her back, and around her neck rested the delicate black rose pendant her late mother had left her. Hanging from the jeweled sash at her waist was a small silver medical pendant—a gift from the elderly healer who had trained her since childhood. She touched it for courage. Healing had always been her calling. While other noble daughters dreamed of crowns and grand celebrations, Aurelia spent her days learning herbs, stitching wounds, and saving injured wolves. The pack often joked that if the Moon Goddess ever chose a healer for a Luna, it would surely be Aurelia. Tonight, she believed fate had finally smiled on her. She carried another secret as well. Just two days earlier, the palace healer had quietly confirmed what she had barely dared to hope. She was carrying a child. Their child. Her fingers instinctively rested against her stomach. I'll tell him after the ceremony, she thought with a trembling smile. We'll begin our family together. Across the courtyard stood Alpha Alaric Nightfall. Tall, powerful, and every bit the leader Mooncrest admired. When his golden eyes found hers, Aurelia noticed something strange. There was no joy. Only conflict. It was gone so quickly she wondered if she had imagined it. The Moon Priestess raised her staff. "Tonight, before the Moon Goddess and all gathered here, Alpha Alaric Nightfall will present the Luna who will stand beside him." Cheers erupted through the crowd. Aurelia's heart pounded. This was the future she had dreamed about since childhood. The priestess smiled. "Alpha... step forward." Alaric climbed the stone platform slowly. His shoulders were rigid. His jaw tight. Something was wrong. Aurelia felt it deep inside the bond they shared. He wasn't happy. Why? The Moon Priestess looked toward him expectantly. "Alpha Alaric, who has been chosen by your heart and by fate?" For several long moments... Silence. Then Alaric finally spoke. "My kingdom stands at the edge of war." The crowd quieted. "Mooncrest needs alliances." Aurelia frowned. This wasn't how the ceremony was supposed to begin. "The future of our people must come before my own desires." A strange chill ran down her spine. Alaric closed his eyes briefly before opening them again. "I have chosen Princess Celeste Vane to become the next Luna of Mooncrest." The words echoed through the courtyard. For one terrible moment... Aurelia couldn't breathe. The world tilted beneath her feet. Someone gasped. Someone else whispered her name. She stared at Alaric, waiting for him to laugh. To tell everyone it was a mistake. Instead, Princess Celeste Vane stepped onto the platform wearing a triumphant smile. The council applauded. Several nobles cheered. Others looked away in shame. Aurelia's wolf cried out inside her. No... She stumbled forward. "Alaric..." Her voice barely carried. He looked at her. Pain flashed across his face before disappearing behind the mask of an Alpha King. "I'm sorry." Two words. They destroyed everything. "The Moon Goddess bonded us." Tears blurred Aurelia's vision. "You told me we would always face the future together." His hands clenched into fists. "I know." "You asked me to trust you." "I did." "You told me you loved me." "I still..." He stopped himself. The hesitation shattered what little hope remained. Celeste slipped her arm through his. "The Alpha has made his choice." Aurelia ignored her. She looked only at Alaric. "Look at me." Slowly... He did. For just a heartbeat, she saw the man she loved buried beneath duty, fear, and indecision. Then he was gone. "I, Alpha Alaric Nightfall, reject Aurelia Blackrose as my destined mate." A cry escaped her lips. The mate bond snapped with unbearable pain. It felt as though her soul had been ripped apart. She collapsed to her knees, clutching her chest as agony spread through every part of her body. The crowd watched in stunned silence. Some wolves wept openly. Others turned away, unable to witness the cruelty unfolding before them. Hidden among the council members, an elderly noble exchanged a satisfied glance with another. "The first step is complete," he whispered. No one noticed. Least of all Aurelia. She could barely hear anything over the sound of her own heartbeat. Alaric took one hesitant step toward her. His wolf begged him to go to her. To lift her up. To take back the words. But members of the council stepped between them. "The ceremony is finished, Alpha," one murmured. "You've done what was necessary." Necessary? Aurelia looked up through tear-filled eyes. Necessary for whom? She slowly rose to her feet, refusing to let anyone see her fall again. Her hand rested protectively over her stomach. No one could know. Not yet. If they knew she carried the Alpha's heir... She didn't know what they might do. With what dignity she had left, Aurelia lifted her chin. "I hope your alliance brings you everything you sacrificed to gain." Her voice was quiet. Steady. But every word cut deeper than a blade. She turned and walked away from the Moon Altar without looking back. No one stopped her. No one followed. Only one pair of golden eyes watched her disappear into the darkness. Alaric's. A single tear slipped down his face as the woman he loved walked out of his life. He told himself it was the only way to protect her. He had no idea that before the next moon rose, Aurelia would vanish from Mooncrest forever. Nor did he know that she carried the greatest secret in the realm. His unborn child. And hidden within the cheering crowd, unseen by all, a cloaked figure smiled. "The Blackrose bloodline has begun to fall," the stranger whispered. "But the hunt has only just begun."
