Setting stone of the day
I yelled at my dad as I was standing before him tears flowed down my cheeks.
I'm not sort of good to be traded like this; you cannot just marry me off like that; dad, you have to try and understand this; I have dreams and tastes of the kind of man I want for myself; I cannot be thrown to a marriage like this, father.
My dad stooped down to look at his daughter, but his face seemed so weak as he listened to her scream quietly with the expression in his eyes he wasn't budging.
He replied gently, "Liry, you know how important this marriage is for our family, your mum and I have already agreed on it and the wedding is almost set to stone."
I want my happiness, not anything else. She cried her voice breaking, father you cannot just force me to marry someone I haven't dated for a day or known since it is convenient to you or for your personal benefits or what ever.
My dad let out a long sigh. Please try and understand this my daughter; this is not only about me being selfish but also about our family name and the future this marriage has to hold so that your husband will help this family to clear the loan we owe the bank. He says gently.
I was beyond reason; I had always been a dutiful daughter to my parents, but this time I was drawing the line and couldn't put my happiness last for the benefit of my family's situation. I never imagined my life would veer in such an odd direction. the next morning the sunset was bright I heard some group of people's voices downstairs I stood up from my bed to step out Walking down the passage to the staircase i saw my dad and his friends with my Uncle sitting down on the couch in the sitting room drinking a glass of wine. '' how are you, liry'" said by my dad i greeted everyone and i asked my dad whats going on here why is everyone dressed up? do we have a house party am not aware of my dad replied yes my love today is the wedding i was shocked, which wedding are you talking about dad, he stood up walking close to me "today your wedding is setting stone all arrangements has been made just go up there meet your mom she gonna give you the wedding gowns and wears you have to put on please be fast we don't have time , my face was filled with surprise, i was speechless at that moment because it looks like a movie scenes One minute, I was navigating my way through my last year of college, thinking of a future where I could design my own path and life. The next second, I found myself standing at the altar, looking into the piercing blue eyes of Ethan Sinclair, the CEO of Sinclair Bank, and a billionaire who could purchase my entire world 10 times over.
It all started when my father, who wanted to salvage our family business from bankruptcy, made a rash choice to take a big loan from Sinclair Bank. At first, it looked like a lifeline; our firm had been floundering for years, but I didn’t know exactly how much my father’s desperation would cost me.
“You’ll thank us later, sweetheart,” my mother said, a false smile plastered on her lips as she smoothed down my wedding dress. “Ethan is a good man. He’ll take care of you.”
I wanted to shout. Take care of me? What did they know about him? Sure, he was gorgeous and pleasant in that corporate manner, but I didn’t know him—at least not beyond the public persona. I was being exchanged like a pawn in some sick game of chess. I glanced at my father, who stood at the end of the aisle, a satisfied smile on his lips as he greeted Ethan. “This is the best option for the family,” he replied with a harsh voice, dismissing my protestations as simple childishness.
We all set to move. I entered my dad’s car with my mom heading to the church for the wedding ceremony. after a 15-minute drive finally we arrived, and the guests was already filled up i the church hall hailing and clapping.
As I walked down the aisle, The flowers blurred in my eyesight, and I felt more like a sacrifice than a bride. Ethan stood there, confident and cool, but as I came close to him, I caught a glimpse of something else or maybe it was sorrow. I couldn’t tell what is happening.
When I reached him, he came closer to me and murmured,"You don’t have to do this.”
“Tell that to my parents,” I muttered back to him, my voice very low barely above a breath.
The ceremony felt unreal. I felt like a character in a movie, stuck in a narrative that had already been created without my approval. Ethan and I exchanged vows, our voices ringing throughout the cathedral, but all I could think about was how to escape. I could detect the murmuring of our guests—,
“Congratulations, Mr. Sinclair,” a voice cried out, drawing me back to reality. It was a competitor, one of the many people who disliked Ethan’s success and plan. “How does it feel to buy yourself a wife?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened, and for a tiny second, I saw a wrath flash in his eyes. “You are not okay,” he responded, his voice firm. “I didn’t buy her. I selected her.”
I wanted to believe him, but how could I? At that moment, my mind raced so fast. What would happen when the honeymoon was over? Would he see me as an asset, a prize to display? Or was there something more to this arrangement?
After the ceremony, we proceeded into the spacious reception hall. It was filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and a strong sense of joy. My heart fell lower. I felt like an imposter at my own wedding.
“Are you okay?” Ethan asked, genuine concern imprinted on his face.
“Am fine,” I said, attempting a smile.
“Look, I know this isn’t ideal,” he began, his voice low, “but I’m not your enemy. Let’s make the best of this.”
“Make the best of it? You mean pretend we’re a blissfully married couple when we both know I’m merely a means to an end?”
He sighed, running a hand through his perfectly arranged hair. “I didn’t ask for this either. But your father...” I cut him off. “My father made a deal without consulting me! I’m not a negotiating chip or goods.”
The anxiety hung in the air, thick and suffocating. Suddenly, a burst of light drew my attention. A photographer was clicking shots, recording our every move. I couldn’t help but feel like we were on display for all to see—two people pushed into a union neither desired.
“Why don’t we give them a show?” Ethan offered, his lips quirking into a mischievous smile.
“What do you have in mind?” I raised an eyebrow.
He pulled me close, placing one arm around my waist. “Dance with me.”
Before I could resist, he pulled me towards the center of the hall, and the music turned to a quiet romantic song. I felt my cheeks blush as we danced together, the world around us receding into the background. There may have been something about this man after all. He was great dancer, and the way he held me seemed oddly soothing.
“See? Not too horrible, right?” He said, his breath warm against my ear.
I laughed nervously. “Right, because being married to a billionaire in a contract I didn’t agree to that it’s a fairy tale.”
He pulled back, peering into my eyes. “Then let’s rewrite the story together. No contracts, just us.”
My heart raced at the possibility, but before I could react, an intruder erupted at the hall entryway. A woman stormed in, her face was mean and furious, looks soo determined “Ethan!” she shouted, her voice slashing through the environment like a dagger.
My heart fell. Who was she?
“Just a friend,” he responded hastily, but the stress in his voice betrayed him.
“Friend?” she chuckled coldly. “You don’t just marry someone to cover your debts, Ethan! What were you thinking?”
The room went silent, all eyes on us. I felt the weight of their gazes, my cheeks heated. What was happening?
Ethan glanced at me, confusion tinted with apprehension. “I’ll handle this,” he said, walking away.
But I was frozen, unable to understand what was trying to unfold. The woman approached closer, her eyes was narrowing at mine. “You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into my dear.”
Just then, my father’s voice sounded from the side of the room. “Enough! This is a private matter!” we don't have to discuss this here woman step aside, please
“No, it’s not,” the woman replied back with a harsh voice, a fire in her eyes. “It’s about time everyone knew the truth.”
As Ethan faced the woman, I could sense the tension growing in his face. My mind raced with questions. What truth? What must be that I don’t know?
At that moment, I realized my wedding day wasn’t just the beginning of a new life; it was the start of a mystery secret that could review all I thought I understood about my family, my marriage, and myself.
I took a big breath, ready to handle whatever lay ahead. “Ethan, what’s going on?” I shouted out, my voice steadier than I felt.
As he turned to face me, his demeanor. “I’ll explain everything, I promise. But first, we need to deal with this.”
With that, the stage was set for the drama that would unfold, and I knew this was just the beginning. What truth was this woman hiding, and how would it affect what I thought I understood about my new life?
As the music faded, I braced myself for the storm.
