Chapter 1:The wrong bride
The rain in New York didn’t fall. It hit. Charlie Kingston stepped out of the car and let it soak him. Seven years gone, and the city still smelled like wet steel and pretzels. The collar of his coat did nothing. He didn’t look up at Kingston Tower. He didn’t have to. He could feel it pressing on him from three blocks away. “Penthouse is ready, sir. Board meeting at eight.” Charlie nodded. His driver didn’t wait for more. The elevator mirrored him back. Thinner face. A scar cutting through his jaw. His hands were steady, but his chest wasn’t. He could still feel it -cold water, his own blood, and a girl’s voice cutting through the dark: Stay with me. Eyes open. Lila. The penthouse was silent. He dropped his bag. The sound cracked off the marble. He poured whiskey and drank it without tasting it. Three years ago a letter came. No name on it. Just a clipping. Lila Hayes, 25, presumed dead after Staten Island ferry accident. He’d read it until the paper went soft at the edges. Then he put it in his wallet and stopped taking it out. Tonight was supposed to be nothing. The Plaza gala. A check. A photo. Go home. The ballroom was gold and noise. Women drifted in silk. Men told jokes too loud. Charlie kept his hands in his pockets and looked anyway. And then he saw her. By the stairs. Dark hair wet and curling. A small scar above her left eyebrow. She laughed, and her head tilted-just like that like she was holding back tears. The air left him. He moved before he thought. The man next to her saw Charlie coming and found somewhere else to be. “Lila,” Charlie said. She turned. Up close, it broke. Lila’s eyes were warm brown. These were gray. And they went hard the second they met his. “I’m sorry,” she said. “You’re mistaken. I’m Aurora Hayes.” Hayes. Not Hale. Hayes. The name hit him twice. First like relief. Then like a fist. Lila’s sister. “You were there,” Charlie said. His voice was lower than he meant. People were starting to stare. “The ferry. Seven years ago. You pulled me out of the water.” Aurora blinked. “I think you have the wrong person.” “No.” He caught her wrist. Her skin was cold. He touched the scar with his thumb. She jerked back. “You have the same scar. The same face.” “That’s because she was my sister.” The words landed. Sister. Charlie’s grip didn’t loosen. “Where is she?” “Dead,” Aurora said. Flat. “Presumed dead. Like the papers said.” Something in him snapped. “Your father testified against hers,” Charlie said. “Your family buried mine. And now you’re here, wearing her face, laughing like nothing happened?” Aurora’s mouth opened. “That was my father, not me. I was seventeen.” “It wasn’t long enough.” The room had gone quiet. A waiter stopped with a tray in his hand. Charlie didn’t care. All he could see was Lila’s face and the Hayes last name and seven years of nothing. “Come with me.” “Excuse me?” “Now, Aurora.” He didn’t drag her. He didn’t have to. She came because the room was watching and because his fingers were still around her wrist and because she didn’t know what else to do. Outside the rain was worse. The car smelled like leather and wet wool. Ten minutes passed. Neither spoke. “Why me?” Aurora finally asked. Her voice didn’t shake. “Because your last name did this to me.” “My father made his choices.” “And you’re going to pay for them.” She looked at him then, really looked. “You don’t know me.” “I knew Lila.” “Lila’s gone.” City Hall glowed at midnight. The doors were still open. “What is this?” Aurora asked as he opened her door. “A wedding.” She laughed. It wasn’t a real laugh. “You’re insane.” “I am.” He held the door. “You’ll marry me tonight. And Richard Hayes will watch his name get dragged through what he did to mine, with his daughter wearing my ring.” Rain sat on her eyelashes. “This won’t bring her back.” “No,” Charlie said. “But it’s a start.” A security guard took the check without counting the zeros. Inside, the clerk was tired and didn’t ask questions. “Do you, Aurora Hayes, take this man” “I don’t,” Aurora said. Charlie turned to her. For a second the anger fell away and what was left was just tired. “Say it,” he said quietly. “Say yes, and we can both go home.” She searched his face. Looking for the boy she’d pulled onto the dock, bleeding and shivering. She didn’t find him. The clerk cleared his throat. Aurora exhaled. “I do.” The words cut. Charlie slid a ring on her finger. His mother’s. It didn’t fit. He signed the paper hard enough to leave an indent. Aurora signed underneath, small and neat. Outside, the rain had stopped. The streets shined. “Congratulations, Mrs. Kingston,” Charlie said as he opened the car door. Aurora got in. The ring was cold. She remembered the night on the dock. Two girls, one boy bleeding. She’d held pressure to his side while Lila talked to him, told him to stay. She remembered his thank you before the sirens. She’d saved him. And now he’d married the wrong sister to punish the right one. Charlie got in beside her. “Drive.” He didn’t touch her. Didn’t look at her. But his hand on the seat between them was a fist. And Aurora understood, with a slow, sinking weight, that the man she once saved now saw her as his revenge.
