Nessa’s Pov
My eyes blinked open, I stood from the bed, yesterday's event came rushing back.
“That bastard,” I cursed. He must think he can buy every one just because he has money. Crazy asshole.
“Grrrr” My phone rang snapping me out of my thoughts.
“hello” I picked it up,
“Miss Nessa,” an old manly voice called out.
“Yes. Who's this?”
“You're speaking to your mother's attending doctor”
My eyes lit up in surprise, Dr Caleb rarely called
“Dr. Caleb, good morning,” I greeted.
“Good morning to you too dear, how are you doing” he asked in a fatherly nature
“Holding up well” I smiled, like he could see me through the phone.
“Okay dear. I just wished to inform you….” He paused, hesitating.
My heart skipped a bit “Did anything happen to my mum?” I asked.
“No dear…but we would pull the plug on her in two hours if you're unable to make the payments”
“What?” My heart stopped beating for a minute, my pulse spiked, “you can't be serious” I was taken aback
“I'm sorry dear” he said, sounding apologetic
“Please, I already promised to pay by the end of this week, just help me watch her for the time being”
He sighed, “I wish there was anything I could do, but it's really out of my hands this time. I've tried my best” he said, sounding tired.
“Please” I could hear my own voice breaking, how did everything get to this point.
“I'm sorry Nessa, I understand things haven't been easy since Aria went missing, but you have to get the money in two hours. That's all the time I was able to get for you” he finished and the line went dead.
I stared at the phone in my hands blankly for a moment, raising my head, my eyes landed on the stacks of bills by the corner, debts upon debts.
“Grrrrrrr” the phone rang again, I grabbed it, then skeptically picked, maybe this time I could hear some good news, a little bit of hope rose in my heart.
“Hello, Good day” I greeted the other side warmly,
“What exactly is good about the day?” A familiar harsh voice came through.
“Mrs Estelle I….” I tried saying
“Hold whatever flimsy excuse it is you have” she cut me off, “since you have refused to pay your rent, I'm calling to inform you I've sold the house. You have two hours to move your things, the new owner would be coming to demolish it soon,” she spat and hung up.
My knees wobbled and hit the hard floor, my head ringing loudly, “two hours” I muttered over and over again, my body trembling lightly. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, tears slipped down my eyes.
Where was I going to manufacture two million dollars in the space of two hours.
"Marriage Agreement” the words I had seen in bold black ink came tumbling to my mind.
I fumbled through my contact list, he said two days, today was still the first day, I still had time.
Finally I found the number that had called me about the interview, I quickly dialed before I would have second thoughts,
“Goodluck industries on the line, how may we be of help?” a sweetly soothing voice answered calmly.
“Uhm… hi, this is Vanessa Bane, I came for the interview yesterday, can I speak to the interviewer from yesterday?” I asked hopefully
“Hold on, you'll be redirected” the voice said again.
Beep.
“Charles Goodluck on the line” the same cold voice from yesterday spoke.
I froze—Charles Goodluck, he was the f*****g Charles Goodluck, how the hell did I not see it.
The same man rumored to have killed his fiancee, five years ago, the owner of Goodluck Industries Worldwide, one of the most eligible bachelors.
“You're Charles Goodluck.” I confirmed quietly
“Go straight to the point. Don't waste my time” he said flatly,
“I accept your offer?” I said, voice lowered.
“Are you asking me a question or accepting the offer?” he sneered.
“No, I mean, I'll marry you.” I said again, my voice firmer, ignoring the tiny voice at the back of my head, screaming at my insanity.
“Good, meet me at my office, let's go over the terms”
“What would I be getting out of this?”
“We'll be married for a year, you'll be well taken care of and at the end of the one year period you'll be given five million dollars” he said as though he was negotiating a business deal.
“Too far, I need the money, my mother…”
“Will be taken care of, I've already directed my assistant to get her the best oncologist in the state,” he cut me off
My pupils dilated in surprise, “I never told you ab….”
“You don't expect me to get married to a woman I know nothing about? Be here in thirty minutes” the line went dead after that.
I stared blankly at the far space, so many thoughts swirling through my head, a dry laugh left my lips, of all men in the world, he had to be Charles Goodluck. A man known for his eccentric and crazy nature.
“Guess that's just my luck” my lips tilted upwards slightly. This was for the best, I couldn't mum so soon after losing Elie.
Soon I was standing in front of his office
Knock.
I entered, “sign those” he went straight to the point.
I glanced through the documents and my blood ran cold at its contents, “I'm here to sign a marriage contract, not a slavery Contract”
“You can either sign or the door is that way” he said lazily, not bothering to look up from the documents in his hands.
I glanced through it once more, I just had to endure for one year right, one year for mother's life, one year of free resources to find Elie, all in exchange for my freedom.
“I agree to everything except controlling where I go and time, I'm not a kid” I shook my head stubbornly, I still had my sessions with Chris, I can't do that if I was on constant lockdown.
He finally looked up, “we can work through that, but I must be aware of your location at all times” he stretched out his arms,
I nodded, handing him the document, he scribbled something down and handed it back to me.
Satisfied, I signed it against my better judgement before I could have a rethink.
Something flickered in his retinas as I handed back the document, I knew one thing, I had just signed away my soul to the devil.
