Chapter 3

When I arrived at Tarlow Pack, the people there looked at me with disdain. It seemed they already knew about the war between the Colley Pack and the Red Moon Pack and that we were severely defeated. In our world, no one respected a loser. I was led to Alpha Daimon’s residence. I was instructed to kneel at the feet of a towering man who looked down at me as if he was sizing up a prey. “Anna, what would you say that the Colley Pack would like me to do to save them? What do the Tarlow Pack get in return for our troubles?” I braced up in order to look confident but remain respectful. “Alpha Daimon, please rest assured that I came with the fullest sincerity. Our training system for young warriors had been refined over decades. I believe that it should be worthy to cultivate the next generation of warriors for Tarlow Pack.” There was no immediate reaction from him. He just looked at me and then gradually grinned. However, the sinister grin made the hairs on the back of my neck stand. He gave me an ominous feeling. Me: Lyra, how do you feel about Daimon? Lyra: I don’t like the man. He seems very cold-blooded and his wolf... Gosh, his wolf is simply a ruthless beast. I can sense its icy cold blood. They are not to be messed with. Me: Yeah, I know that. I secretly sighed and the burden of the continuance of my Pack weighed heavily on me. “So, at least you guys know what you’re doing after all the incompetence shown on the battlefield! At least now you know what I like and the situation you are in.” Daimon stood up, he was so tall that I had to tilt my head and bend backward slightly to see his face. “The Colley Pack’s training system is the most complete and tested. I don’t deny that. But how do I know that what you give me is the complete system?” “The results will prove itself. Alpha Daimon. You will be more than satisfied as soon as you see the outcome of the new Tarlow Pack fighters who had trained under the Colley Pack training system. I believe that their advancement will be a qualitative leap. If the training system is ineffective, then we are willing to face the consequences of your wrath.” Daimon still did not express his acceptance. He seemed uncertain about something. “It sounds like a good deal if you put it in that way. But how exactly would you implement it?” Wayne and I had discussed on this and I said, “We’ll send our most experienced instructors here to train the Tarlow Pack warriors in all aspects. Your instructors can then learn the pedagogy and then be able to train the others in the future.” “Good.” Daimon finally nodded slightly, but he locked his gaze on me. He examined me carefully and then asked, “So, who will be the ones who come?” “We don’t have specific arrangements for that yet. You can rest assured that the ones we send are the best instructors.” Daimon pointed his finger at me and said, “No need, I think you are just fine. You will come over and become our Tarlow Pack instructor. In return, I will help you defeat the Red Moon Pack before the next war.” I was shocked. Why did he make such a request? I was Wayne’s most trusted and important assistant. Wayne needed me beside him as much as the warriors on the battlefield needed me. If I stayed here, my ability to go back when they needed me would be severely hampered. “Alpha Daimon, I am not the best instructor in the Pack. We have people who specialize in training warriors, they are more suitable to set up the system than me.” He suddenly laughed with a hint of threat. “I’ve never done this kind of deal and I wouldn’t trust anyone so easily. However, I know that the first person who was sent to negotiate with me must be the one your Alpha trusts the most and also the most capable in the entire Pack. You are that person. You are also the best hostage if anything goes wrong. Am I wrong to say that?” I froze in place. Daimon was completely right. By keeping me, he could ensure that he got the best training system and could also manipulate the Colley Pack through me. I knew very well Wayne’s trust and reliance on me. He would not abandon me. Thus, Wayne would effectively be completely controlled by Daimon. Lyra screamed: No! Don’t stay here! Anna, you know what that means! Don’t trust him! Me: But the Colley Pack is at stake. I must complete my mission. Lyra: But... We could die here... We really could... Me: I’m sorry, Lyra. We’ll have to risk it this time. Just as I was hesitating, Daimon suddenly braced up and asked sternly, “I’ve given you enough time to consider. Now, answer me if you decided to stay.” I knew this was the last chance for Colley Pack to survive. If I hesitated for a second more, we would lose this opportunity. Nothing was more important to the survival of my clansman at this point. I gritted my teeth and firmly nodded. “Alpha Daimon, I am willing to stay. Please help the Colley Pack get out of this mess!” Just like that, I remained at Tarlow Pack from that day onward. I thought I could go back to pick up my belongings but I was not given the chance to. All I had was the clothes I was wearing. I started training the warriors the next day. I found that the biggest difference between us and the Tarlow Pack warriors was that they were bloodthirsty. They did not have any pity or compassion toward their opponents. They would kill anyone who was considered the enemy without even thinking about it. The Colley Pack was not like this. Wayne was a powerful Alpha, but he was respectable, compassionate, and sympathetic. He was eager for peace and equally eager for each werewolf to be able to find their own goals and pursuits. This was why I admire him so much. I love the Colley Pack and I would give anything to be there. Daimon was a bloodthirsty leader and the young warriors who grew up under him undoubtedly also became just as cruel and ruthless. On this day, I was teaching the warriors how to attack from the treetop and Daimon was at the sidelines observing. While practicing, one of the weaker warriors lost his balance and fell from the tree. Just as I walked over to pick him up and give him some pointers, he scurried on all fours toward Daimon’s feet. “Alpha Daimon, I’m sorry, I’m so useless... I won’t make such a lowly mistake again, please believe me!” Before I could react, Daimon already swung his arm and smacked him toward a tree. He hit the tree so hard that he spat out a mouthful of blood. I was so shocked that I froze in place. Daimon slowly walked toward him, lifted his foot, and stomped down hard on his chest. I immediately heard the sound of broken ribs and shuddered. Daimon said coldly, “If apologizing could make you strong, I believe that you would already be the most powerful warrior in the Pack by now. Since you are so useless, then don’t train anymore. The dungeon should be a more suitable place for you.” He then ordered his men to drag him out of the training ground as he screamed in agony. Lyra: I really don’t like him. In contrast, Lord Wayne is much more gracious. I would rather give my life for Lord Wayne than be at the mercy of this guy! Me: Stop it, Lyra, this is the price we pay for his protection... I really don’t like this guy either. Lyra: He’s just awful. That’s his warrior! Me: You’re right, that’s his man, and he shouldn’t treat him like that. It took me a long time to muster the courage to approach Daimon and tried to speak for that young warrior. “Alpha Daimon, I have the confidence to train him up, please give me the chance to help him.” “Anna, mercy is a weakness and something that I loathe the most.” Daimon looked me in the eye and emphasized word for word. “Tarlow Pack is powerful because we are merciless. If you don’t want something similar to happen to you, then be a good girl and continue with your training. Never interfere with my decision!” I found it difficult to breathe amid his oppressive aura. I did not dare to say anything else and went back to training the other warriors. A few days later, the war between the Colley Pack and the Red Moon Pack started again.
