Thr Calm before the Storm

1081 Words
The next morning, Shreyashi awoke with a start, the weight of the previous night’s unease still heavy on her chest. She lay in bed for a moment, staring at the ceiling, listening to the muffled sounds of the city outside. It was still early, but the sunlight creeping through her window reminded her that another day awaited her—another chance to prove herself, but also another day filled with the dread of what awaited her when she went home. She quickly pushed aside her thoughts and forced herself to get up. Her routine was the same—getting dressed in a modest outfit, checking herself in the mirror, and heading out the door. But today, something felt different. The exhaustion she had pushed aside the night before seemed to creep into her bones, and the usual confidence she had walking to work was replaced with a nagging sense of uncertainty. As she walked toward the bus stop, she tried not to think about the shadows that seemed to follow her wherever she went, or the way her stepfather’s drunken words echoed in her head. She couldn’t afford to be distracted, not when she had worked so hard to secure this internship. --- The day at Malhotra Tech started with the usual chaos. The office was bustling with activity, employees darting from one meeting to another, trying to keep up with the relentless pace set by Arjun Malhotra. Shreyashi was still adjusting to the intensity of the environment, but she was determined to make a good impression. She buried herself in the files on her desk, focusing on the work at hand, trying to shut out everything else. The morning passed in a blur of deadlines and demands, but Arjun’s presence was never far from her thoughts. He was a constant force in the office, a shadow that loomed over everyone. His meetings were infamous, and his expectations were high. She couldn’t escape the lingering feeling of dread that had followed her since yesterday, but she tried her best to ignore it. She focused on the task at hand, knowing that any distraction could cost her dearly in this fast-paced environment. --- By noon, Shreyashi had completed the tasks assigned to her and was working on the next batch of reports when Arjun appeared at her desk. He didn’t speak right away, just stood there, his presence imposing as ever. She felt a slight flutter in her chest, a mix of nervousness and unease. "You’re working well today," he remarked, his voice as sharp as always, though there was a hint of something else—approval, perhaps? Shreyashi glanced up, surprised by the compliment. "Thank you, sir." He gave a brief nod and then moved on, his eyes scanning the rest of the office. Shreyashi watched him go, trying to suppress the tension in her body. Every encounter with Arjun felt like a test, a high-stakes game where even the smallest misstep could lead to failure. --- Later that afternoon, during a lunch break, Shreyashi stepped outside for a moment to get some fresh air. The sun was shining, and the streets were busy, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. As she walked down the sidewalk, her thoughts kept drifting back to the previous night. Her mind replayed every moment of her walk home, and the way she felt as though someone was watching her. She tried to calm herself. It was just paranoia, she reasoned. Maybe she was overthinking things. The city was full of people, and it wasn’t uncommon for people to feel uneasy when walking alone at night. But still, the nagging sensation refused to leave her. --- The rest of the afternoon passed without incident, and as evening drew near, Shreyashi packed up her things and prepared to leave for the day. She was exhausted, but there was a sense of accomplishment too. She had survived another day in the fast-paced world of Malhotra Tech, and that was something. But as she stepped out of the building, that familiar sense of unease crept back. She couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was following her. She glanced around the busy street, but there was no one who seemed to be paying her any attention. Yet, the feeling remained, like a shadow clinging to her every step. She quickened her pace, but the feeling didn’t go away. The city streets were crowded with people, but it was as if the whole world had blurred around her. Every footstep behind her sounded too loud, too deliberate. Her heart pounded in her chest as she neared the bus stop. Just as she was about to step onto the bus, she saw him—the figure from yesterday. The man who had been following her. He was standing at the edge of the crowd, his eyes locked onto hers. --- Panic surged through her as she climbed aboard the bus, trying to steady her breath. She was so focused on the man that she barely noticed the other passengers around her. The bus doors closed with a hiss, and she pressed herself against the window, her heart racing. The man hadn’t followed her onto the bus, but the sense of danger still hung in the air. She couldn’t relax. Her thoughts raced as she tried to make sense of everything. Who was he? Why had he been following her? The bus ride felt like the longest one she had ever been on. As soon as she reached her stop, she stepped off the bus and quickly walked toward her apartment. Her legs felt like lead, her body weary from the constant tension. --- At home, the silence greeted her like an old friend. The apartment was empty, save for the faint sound of her stepfather snoring in the other room. It was the one thing she could count on—his drunken stupor keeping him out of her way for another night. But tonight, that wasn’t enough. The fear that had been creeping up on her for days now felt like it was closing in. She locked the door behind her and collapsed onto the couch, her heart still racing. The shadows in her mind loomed large as she thought about the man from the street, the way he had watched her, the way his eyes had never left her. She couldn’t shake the feeling that he was still out there, waiting for her to slip up. ---
