When people saw Audrey and I together, they said it seemed like a Beauty and the Beast scenario.
Audrey was recognized as the new campus belle right at the start of freshman year, while I was mocked as the campus joke because on the first day, I couldn't afford the freshman tour fee and had to wash dishes in the cafeteria to earn money.
My poverty became a joke to others.
The first time I had interaction with Audrey was before the freshman final exams. She hadn't paid much attention in class, so as the exams approached, she came to borrow my study notes. Later, she often came to me for tutoring because she couldn't understand the notes. We grew familiar through these interactions.
We got together officially on the day the final exam ended. As a gentle breeze blew, Audrey kissed my cheek. It was my first close contact with a girl, and although she didn't speak, I saw that kiss as a symbol of romance.
I didn't have much money, but I knew that loving someone meant treating them wholeheartedly. So, after getting together with Audrey, I never disappointed her in any way. But our relationship ended in such a tragic way.
I ignored Audrey's mocking words and found an empty seat casually. After all, this was Johnny's wedding, and I didn't want to make a scene here.
But even if I ignored them, they didn't plan to let me off easily. The man beside Audrey wrapped his arm around her and walked up to me. He looked down at me with the same disdain and mockery as Audrey's as if he were looking at an insignificant nobody.
"Are you Carl Wright?" The man's voice was condescending, his slightly raised chin aimed at my face.
I frowned slightly and said nothing. It had been years since anyone acted so arrogantly before me.
But my silence seemed like a provocation to them, and Audrey shouted immediately, "Mike's talking to you! Are you deaf or something?"
Johnny, who was standing nearby, tugged my sleeve and reminded me, "This is Audrey's boyfriend, Mike, the heir of the Smith Group."
Mike's arrogance grew more apparent, like a peacock displaying its feathers. I was aware of the Smith Group, a leading company with deep roots in this city, though its recent development wasn't as strong as before. Still, it remained impressive in others' eyes.
No wonder he was so proud; he indeed had reasons to be. But to me, he was no different from anyone else.
Perhaps because Mike didn't see the shock or flattery he expected on my face, he frowned, a hint of anger flashing in his eyes. "So, you're the one who spread rumors about Audrey in college so that everybody called her a gold digger, right?"
Though his words were phrased as a question, his tone was affirmative. I finally responded, "Yes." I nodded, looking into Mike's eyes without backing down.
Mike's expression grew darker, and his tone carried a commanding edge. "Who do you think you are? You don't even have a hundred dollars in your pocket. How dare you slander Andrey?"
Audrey leaned against Mike as tightly as possible, her voice pitiful as she said, "Exactly, Mike. He doesn't even have enough money for me to buy a bag. He just wants me to be his girlfriend, and when I refused him, he began to slander me." Audrey's whining made my skin crawl.
Yet Mike found her attitude particularly pleasing and pointed at me immediately, saying, "Okay. If you slap yourself and apologize to me now, I won't hold it against you. Maybe I'll even offer you a job as a security guard at my father's company. How about this?"
