Chapter 1
I postponed the afternoon meeting to attend Johnny's wedding. Although we lost touch after graduating from college, we were pretty good friends back then. So naturally, I had to be present for his once-in-a-lifetime wedding.
As soon as I entered the hotel, I saw Johnny welcoming guests at the entrance. He was wearing a white suit with a beaming smile on his face. The moment he saw me, his smile seemed to freeze for a second but quickly returned to normal. He changed so fast that I thought it was just my illusion.
"There you are, Carl! I've been waiting for you for so long!" Johnny strode up to me, gave me a big hug, and patted my back a few times.
His warm gesture smoothed over the awkwardness of not seeing each other for years instantly as if we were suddenly back in that cramped college dorm room.
I smiled and patted Johnny on the shoulder. "I can't believe you're getting married. Time flies! Here's a little gift for you." I handed him a gift I had prepared in advance.
His expression twisted for a moment, and there was a meaningful look in his eyes as he said to me, "You don't need to give me a gift. Life is hard. And we are friends; there's no need for this."
Johnny's words stirred an indescribable emotion in my heart.
My parents were workers, and we lived in poverty. During college, I spent all my time either studying or working. Johnny knew my family's financial situation wasn't great, so he helped me a lot.
Back then, I couldn't repay him, but now I could. I decided to persuade Johnny to join my company after the wedding. At least he would get a better-paid job.
I didn't argue further with Johnny about the gift, knowing he wouldn't change his mind easily. So, when he was greeting other guests, I placed the gift on a table with the others. By the time Johnny looked at me again, I had already put my gift in place.
"Come on, I'll take you inside. Not all the guests have arrived yet, so you can catch up with our college friends." Johnny led me toward a side lounge.
I laughed and said, "There's nothing for me to catch up with them."
The college campus was like a small society, and my classmates had mocked my poverty more than once. Aside from Johnny, I had no other friends in college.
Johnny's smile dimmed a bit when he heard my words. I found his expression strange but couldn't put my finger on it.
It wasn't until we stood outside the lounge and I heard familiar voices inside that I finally understood Johnny's odd expression.
"I'm sure Carl would come. I want to see if he's still as useless as he was back then." The familiar voice belonged to my ex-girlfriend, Audrey White.
Our breakup wasn't amicable. My fists clenched tightly, but Audrey was also Johnny's classmate, so it was understandable for her to be invited.
To avoid making Johnny feel embarrassed, I turned to reassure him, "I'm fine. It's all in the past. We've all grown up and won't be as immature as before."
But the moment I pushed open the door, I realized I was wrong. Next to Audrey sat a man with slicked-back hair, exuding arrogance. Clearly, he was not an ordinary person.
When Audrey heard the door open, she turned around. The moment she saw me, mockery filled her eyes. "Oh, here comes Carl 'the Super Simp'. Have you just finished washing dishes in the kitchen?"
Audrey's words prompted a burst of laughter from the crowd.
