Episode 5: Jake's POV

858 Words
The rain pounded hard against the windows of the hotel room, the storm outside echoing the turmoil inside my chest. I paced the room, scanning for an escape route, but my eyes kept drifting back to him. Alex. He was even more breathtaking than I remembered—his sharp jawline softened only by the warmth in his deep brown eyes, his dark hair slightly damp from the earlier downpour. Every time he glanced my way, my façade—the cool, calm, untouchable Mafia boss everyone knew—threatened to crack. From the first moment we met, I’d been drawn to him like a moth to a flame. I’d told myself it was just a fleeting attraction, a distraction I couldn’t afford. But standing here, with danger lurking just outside the door, I knew I was lying to myself. I’d even had him investigated—a precaution I always took with people who wandered too close to my world. What I found only made him more impossible to ignore: a brilliant law student, kind to a fault, always sacrificing his own needs for others. Alex had no idea how deeply he’d gotten under my skin. I glanced toward him again and caught him watching me. His gaze lingered, unwavering, as if he could see past my walls, past the mask I wore for everyone else. My chest tightened, a flutter I hadn’t felt in years making it hard to breathe. I tore my eyes away, trying to focus on the task at hand—finding a way out—but the storm outside seemed determined to trap us. The thunder roared like cannon fire, and lightning flashed, throwing Alex’s face into sharp relief. That’s when it happened—he stumbled, losing his balance as the lights flickered. I moved without thinking. Instinct. My arms wrapped around his waist just as he fell into me. We staggered backward until we landed on the edge of the bed. For a moment, time stopped. His body pressed against mine, his rapid heartbeat thundering in sync with my own. Every nerve in my body screamed for me to move, to pull away before I did something reckless. But then Alex tilted his head up, his lips brushing mine in a hesitant, questioning kiss. I froze. No one dared to get this close to me—ever. And yet, I didn’t stop him. I couldn’t. The moment his lips pressed fully against mine, a jolt of electricity surged through me, setting my veins ablaze. I kissed him back, deepening it slightly, tasting the raw honesty I’d been denying myself for too long. And then, just as suddenly, it ended. Alex pulled away, his eyes wide, confused, and maybe a little scared. I searched his face, desperate to read his thoughts, but the moment was shattered by a sharp, urgent knock at the door. My men. They’d finally found us. I stood, my hand instinctively reaching for Alex’s. His fingers laced with mine as we moved to the door together. “Boss,” one of my men said the moment it opened, his tone brisk but relieved. “We need to get you out. Now. And your… friend.” Friend. The word made something twist painfully inside me. I only gave a curt nod before pulling Alex with me. The storm still raged as we slipped into the waiting SUV, my men forming a protective shield around us. Inside the car, the city lights blurred past in streaks of gold and silver, the storm washing the streets clean. Alex sat beside me, silent, but his hand still rested in mine. I didn’t let go. Not this time. I turned my head slightly, catching him watching me again, his eyes full of questions he didn’t dare voice. I forced a small, reassuring smile, squeezing his hand gently. “You’re safe now,” I murmured, my voice low enough that only he could hear. “I promise.” He nodded, but I could feel his unease, his curiosity. I wanted to tell him everything—why my men had to protect us, who was after me, why he’d been dragged into my dangerous world. But more than that, I wanted to tell him what that kiss had done to me. We arrived at my villa, a sprawling estate hidden behind iron gates and armed guards. Inside, it was secure, a fortress designed to keep threats out. But as I led Alex through the grand halls, my mind wasn’t on security or safety. It was on him. Every brush of his hand against mine, every stolen glance, every unspoken word between us—it was unraveling me. I was Jake Romano, a Mafia boss feared by many, respected by all. I wasn’t supposed to feel this vulnerable. I wasn’t supposed to want someone this badly. And yet, as I stood in my own sanctuary, watching Alex take in his surroundings with wide, cautious eyes, I realized the truth: I wasn’t just drawn to him anymore. I was falling for him. Hard. And for the first time in my life… I didn’t know how to stop. To be continued…
