Chapter 4:How Did We End Up Here?

791 Words
Alex's second year of college was off to a great start. He had maintained an excellent academic record, with a 4.9 CGPA, and was determined to keep it that way. However, despite his academic success, Alex was struggling financially. His family couldn't afford to support him, and he had to rely on part-time jobs to make ends meet. One of his part-time jobs was as a receptionist at a luxury hotel in the city. Alex enjoyed the work, as it allowed him to interact with people from all walks of life. Plus, the hotel's elegant atmosphere was a nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle of campus life. One evening, as Alex was checking in a guest, he heard a commotion at the entrance of the hotel. He looked up to see a group of men in suits, surrounding a familiar figure. Alex's heart skipped a beat as he realized it was Jake, the mysterious man he had helped a year ago. Jake was being escorted to a meeting room on the top floor, and Alex couldn't help but wonder what was going on. As he watched, a group of rough-looking men appeared out of nowhere, causing a scene in the lobby. "Hey, you're not welcome here!" one of the men shouted, blocking Jake's path. Alex's eyes widened as he realized that these men were from a rival gang. He had heard rumors about Jake's involvement with organized crime, but he had never thought he would see it firsthand. The situation was escalating quickly, with the two groups facing off in the lobby. Alex knew he had to act fast to prevent things from getting out of hand. Without hesitation, Alex grabbed the phone and dialed security. "We need assistance in the lobby, ASAP," he said, trying to remain calm. As he waited for security to arrive, Alex kept a close eye on Jake, who was standing tall, unfazed by the chaos around him. Alex couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for Jake's confidence and leadership. When security finally arrived, they quickly dispersed the rival gang, and Jake's men escorted him to the meeting room. As Alex watched him go, he felt a sense of wonder. Who was Jake, really? And what was his role in all of this? As the lobby returned to normal, Alex couldn't shake off the feeling that his life was about to intersect with Jake's again. And this time, it wouldn't just be a chance encounter. Just as Alex was about to return to his receptionist duties, he saw Jake emerge from the meeting room, flanked by his men. But this time, they were moving quickly, trying to escape the hotel. Alex's eyes widened as he realized what was happening. The police had arrived, responding to the disturbance caused by the rival gang. And now, they were after Jake. Without hesitation, Jake's men began to usher people out of the hotel, trying to get them to safety. Alex watched in amazement as Jake himself helped an elderly couple escape, shielding them from harm. As the police closed in, Jake's eyes locked onto Alex's. For a moment, they just stared at each other, the tension between them palpable. Then, without a word, Jake sprinted towards Alex, grabbing his arm and pulling him along. "Come on!" he shouted, as they dodged police officers and hotel staff. Alex didn't need to be told twice. He followed Jake, his heart racing with excitement and fear. They weaved through the crowded lobby, finally reaching the stairwell. As they climbed the stairs, Alex could hear the police shouting below. They were closing in, and fast. Jake pushed open a door on the third floor, revealing a long corridor lined with hotel rooms. "In here!" he shouted, pulling Alex into one of the rooms. As the door slammed shut behind them, Alex found himself locked in a hotel room with Jake. The Mafia boss. For a moment, they just stared at each other, both of them panting heavily. Then, without a word, Jake began to search the room, looking for an escape route. Alex watched him, still trying to process what had just happened. He had helped Jake escape from the police. And now, they were locked in a hotel room together. As Jake searched the room, Alex couldn't help but notice the way his eyes crinkled at the corners when he concentrated. Or the way his hair curled slightly at the nape of his neck. Alex felt a flutter in his chest, and suddenly, he realized that he was in trouble. Big trouble. Because as he looked at Jake, he knew that he was attracted to him. And that was a complication he didn't need... To be continued...
