Chapter 9: Alphas, Beta's, and Mates

2278 Words
Gabis POV: I followed Joe out of the pack house, and we quickly made our way through the gates and off towards the tree lines. I chose to stick close to Joe and kept throwing questions his way hoping that if I kept him busy and stayed away from Ben and Aiden no one would have the chance to change their mind about me coming along. That may be how it started, but I gotta admit I like Joe. He was super funny and playful. The training area was huge, around 2 acres, with a track going around the outside. On the right was a thick line of trees, and on the left stood three large buildings. Joe told me that the bigger of the three was an indoor gym and pool available to the whole pack while the smaller two were indoor training centers for the beginner classes or for when the weather was extremely bad. There was already a large group of men and some women on the field doing various warmups when we arrived. I must have piqued their interest because quite a few paused to observe me walking with Joe, but after he shot them a nasty glare, they all quickly turned away. “Don't pay them any mind. They're not used to outsiders being allowed here.” “I won't get in the way, will I?” “Of course not. I'll even let you in on a little secret,” Joe bent down and whispered to me, “You are one of the most important people in this pack. No one here has any right to question you for any reason.” “Really?” “Do I look like I would lie to you?” I didn't answer, just raised my brow at him because he did, in fact, look like he would lie. “What, I wouldn't. At least not about anything serious. You technically outrank me.” “I do?” “Yup, the only people above you at the moment are our parents and Aiden.” “That doesn't make any sense. Why do I rank so high? And wouldn't Ben out rank me too?” “For now, technically, yes, but I can't see him telling you no for anything, so we're just gonna put him under you.” He motioned for me to follow him over to some bleachers that were well off to the side of the field. “it all comes down to bloodlines, and you come from a very powerful one.” Joe left me to join the rest of the crowd as I sat on the bleachers trying to contemplate his words, but it didn't make much sense to me. I don't think I'm as up there as he thinks I am. I'm not even a real wolf. ‘Yes we are, how dare you.’ ‘Jesus Ivey.’ She had been quiet since yesterday, I almost forgot the little creep just sits in my head reading my mind all day. ‘Would you stop calling your better half a creep and what makes you think you're not a real wolf? What am I chopped liver?’ ‘I didn't mean it like that, I just meant that my mom is human, I was raised a human. How could I possibly be a more powerful wolf than these people who were born and raised to know who they are and what they can do?’ ‘Mom being a human does not change what we are. We were born to be natural leaders for our kind.” Before I could get the chance to respond to her, I was interrupted by a very rude man. “Hello, did you hear me?” he snapped his fingers in my face. “I said you shouldn't be here.” “Excuse me?” “This is a private session you need to leave.” I didn't know who this man was, but he was starting to irritate me with that snobby attitude.“No I don't.” I tried to turn my focus on the field, but he stepped in my line of sight. “ What is your problem?” “I should be asking you that. What makes you think you are above the rules.” I was about to respond when I saw something come zooming towards us or rather him. Before I could think of how to react, he dodged it and turned angrily towards where the object came from. I followed his line of sight to see the boys standing there glaring at the man. All three sets of eyes were cold and pitch black. “Alpha, Be-”the man immediately lowered his gaze. Not that I blame him. If looks could kill, he'd be dead three times over. “SILENCE!” Aiden growled out. Effectively gaining the attention of everyone nearby. “Are you all right?” When he addressed me, his tone was lighter but still somewhat frightening. “I'm fine, a little annoyed, but no harm done.” I gave the three of them a small smile trying to lighten the mood. Ben walked past the man and began to examine me as if I had been in some type of fight. “Stop it, you are overreacting.” I tried slapping his hands away. He growled when I pulled my arm away from him, and it reminded me of what Kelly said about wolves being overprotective of pups. I let out a sigh and left him to look over my nonexistent injuries. Ben finally stepped back, “Satisfied ?” “No.” I rolled my eyes at him as he reached over to grab a water bottle from behind me. “Next time someone approaches you, mindlink me.” “Did you throw that? You could have hit me.” I yelled at him. Now it was his turn to roll his eyes at me as if my lack in trust of his aim somehow offended him. He moved to stand in front of me, blocking me from view as he scowled at the back of the man's head. “Henry white.” “Yes Alpha.” “What exactly did you think you were doing?” “I'm sorry, Alpha, I did not know she was acquainted with you.” “That was not my question.” I was beginning to feel uncomfortable, like a massive pressure was being placed on my chest. The man must have felt it too because it looked like he was in pain. “I was just telling her that it was against the rules for her to be here.” I was about to step in, but Ben must have sensed it. ‘Stay out of it, Gabi, we are not allowed to undermine Aiden's authority.’ “Who gave you the authority to decide who is allowed to attend my class?” The man remained silent, his eyes glued firmly on the ground in front of him. Suddenly, the pressure started to get heavier, to the point it was getting harder to breathe as Aiden shouted “ANSWER ME.” The man dropped to his knees. “No one.” It was clear that he was in immense pain, but I could not understand how when no one had touched him. ‘Deep breaths, Gabi, it's not directed at you. Just let it pass.’ I held onto Ben while trying to catch my breath. ‘What's happening?’ ‘It's Odin, he's angry. So is Atlas, but we can let it slide sense he wasn't stupid enough to touch you.’ “Well sense you decided to give yourself authority over the Beta female it's only right that your sparring partner be her brother.” The pressure was starting to ease a bit. I looked around Ben to see a menacing smile on Aidens' face, and Joe looked amused as he stood behind Aiden. “That sounds like fun to me.” “Ben.” I looked up at Ben, and he had the same menacing look on his face. He completely ignored me. “isn't this going a bit far? I told you I'm fine.” “Well I'm not. You are the third highest ranked female and the 8th highest ranked wolf. He needs to be taught respect.” he turned around and gave me a quick kiss on the forehead. “try not to get into any more trouble.” He grabbed the man's arm and dragged him off. Joe walked off next, redirecting the crowd away from the stands. “Are you sure you're alright?” I took a moment to watch Aiden closely as his eyes slowly faded back to normal, and the gruffness left his voice. He suddenly looked unsure of himself. “Did I scare you, I didn't mean to.” “ I'm fine.” I probably should have been afraid of him and the way he reacted, but I wasn't. “But did you have to do that? He didn't do anything wrong. He was just annoying.” “I know it may seem unnecessary to you, but it's best to handle things like this immediately so that they don't get out of hand later on.” Aiden looked at me hesitantly before glancing over at the men and women that started running laps around the field. “Can I ask you a question?” “Shoot.” He kept his eyes on the field. “Why exactly did he have to be dealt with when he technically did what he was supposed to do. I am breaking the rules by being here. What makes me so special?” “It's complicated. Blood lines are important in our world. We are naturally bigger and stronger, so we, as ranked wolves, have the responsibility to lead and protect. Ben, Joe, and I have been trained from birth to be able to do that.” “Ok I get why you guys are up there, but why me?” “Because one day you'll be a Luna.” Aiden looked back at me. A serious expression on his face. “The men in ranked bloodline are expected to provide and protect while the women are expected to lead and nurture.” He went back to observing the others. “I'm still confused, so I'll be a luna?” I saw a smile playing on the corner of his mouth, “yes.” He took a seat on the bleachers in front of me, never looking back. “Because Alpha females are rare. When they do appear, they will almost always be mated to another Alpha. ” “I'm not an alpha, Ben said we're Betas, you even called me a Beta.” “Technically you and Ben are Alphas. Your dad was the second born Alpha pup of his pack. He mated with Ben's mom, who was our beta. Since he couldn't inherit his father's pack, he came here to be our Beta.” “You keep saying mate, are you talking about like, soul mates, or is that just what wolves call their partners?” “Both. Werewolves are born with only half a soul; your mate will be your other half.” “Do you have a mate?” Aiden stiffened up a bit and didn't seem like he could answer. “Is that not something I should have asked?” “No you can ask, it's just… complicated. Everyone has a mate. It's just those who have found each other and those who haven't.” “Find them? You don't get to pick?” “You can, but it won't be the same. The Goddess Selena matches you with the other half of your soul. It is rare, but sometimes people choose to reject the goddesses gift and pick someone else.” I sat there quietly debating to have someone hand-picked for you or to find love on your own. I wonder if I would pick the person that was made for me. “How do you know when you find them?” “Well, when pups come of age, you'll be able to scent them. Your mate will smell intoxicating to you, and when you touch, there are supposed to be sparks.” “Well this sucks. It's like there's no point dating.” Aiden burst out laughing. “What's so funny?” “Theoretically you're right, but wolves rarely wait. It could take years to find your other half. Some people give up altogether and choose on their own.” “Are you waiting?”He was quiet for a while. It looked like he was debating on how much to tell me. It wouldn't surprise me if he dated. He was extremely attractive, and I imagine girls would have made advances. “No, I didn't wait. Though I wish I had.” We heard a loud whistle. Apparently, they were done running laps. “That's my cue.” He got up from the bleachers and jogged over to the group. I spent the rest of the day going back and forth between watching everyone train and being lost in my own thoughts. This new world I had been thrown into was off-putting, to say the least, yet at the same time, it's so fascinating. To know that there's such powerful creatures in the world and I am one of them made me feel a strange sense of pride. I'm not totally convinced that this is where I belong, but I at least want to know more about all of it.
