Chapter 4

1200 Words
Alistair ran out just behind me but he was quicker and he reached the person before me. “Catch her!” I yelled just as he finally grabbed the girl whom I only saw clearly after I caught up to him. She was petite with curly brown hair and a face I recognized. “You’re in my class.” Her eyes darted in my direction, expression was full of panic. She was the Omega that had tried to stop me from fighting against Apollo before all this madness began. “Please don’t let him hurt me. I swear I won’t say anything.” I hate to admit it but I hesitated. Everything that could go wrong if someone found out and considered me a threat flashed before my eyes. Then I saw her own eyes— the fear— I’d seen it before, staring alone into a mirror after my parents death. “Let her go.” “We can’t trust her—“ “There is no we, and frankly I don’t trust you either. I don’t understand what happened myself but what’s your big idea? Kidnap her? Or worse,” The girl's big doe eyes raced between Alistair and me till finally he let her go. “What’s your name? “Thora.” “We have to talk about this. I can help you.” Alistair whispered. “I don’t need your help. Just go.” His eyes darkened a beat, then with a gracious nod, he turned around and I faced Thora again. “I really do promise not to say anything. I was only coming to see if you were okay.” “You seem to be really insistent on getting close to the school's number one outcast.” She smiled. “I don’t have any friends either. I’m a halfblood, my mother was a witch. I just thought us outcasts have to stick together, right?” I stared at her for a moment, I didn’t know how to explain it but she radiated so much light and warmth that I could feel my own heart melting just a bit. “Well, I’m an even bigger freak now, last chance to ditch before people see you with me.” “Do you know what it is? I mean your power. I saw you go against Apollo and I can tell you’re stronger than you look.” “Apollo beat me, a lot.” “And yet you were the only one that managed to strike back.” I smiled at her optimism and as we left together, she continued to talk my ear off about all the possibilities of what I could be. I didn’t mind, it would keep me from descending too deep into my thoughts for a while. Was there really more to me? And what was Alistair going to tell me? Could I really trust him? The next day was Pax-Luna, something of an independent day to commemorate the end of a Great War that united the packs. Every year the academy hosted a gala and invited the most elite of the elites. Social gatherings like that weren’t my thing, but this year, I was running away from facing my problems and a party was just what I needed. I arrived at the function in a simple dress with long sleeves that cut open on both sides, I’d pulled my white hair up in a ponytail which Maddie had insisted on adorning with stones and glitter. “Oh my, I love your hair!” Thora yelled over the noise. Her dress was a bit more extra than mine, it had stones and intricate detailing and it flowed down into a beautiful train. Her sleeves were long and covered compared to mine. Her eyes dropped to my dress. Then she leaned in. “Your sleeve isn’t covered. What if someone sees your invisible wound.” “I completely forgot about that.” “Don’t worry, we’ll just switch dresses.” “Oh no, yours is so much prettier plus I’m taller.” “Have you seen the train on this dress? Come on before anyone notices.” Thora dragged me out just as Lilith walked in on Apollo’s arm. I didn’t miss the look of pride she gave me, pulling him closer as I passed her. Thora took me to the closest bathroom, we switched dresses and returned to the gala after right when Alpha Odin was giving a speech with Apollo standing next to him. If I didn’t know Apollo better I could’ve sworn he looked almost… nervous. I guess he is mortal afterall. “Oh shoot, I forgot something back in my room. I need to go get it.” “So you need me to come with you?” No, it’s fine I’ll be right back.” A few minutes after Thora left my side, Killian slid up beside me. “Looking good Princess. I wouldn't have pictured you in this scene.” “I could say the same thing. Shouldn’t you be off in an abandoned building somewhere doing whatever it is you do in abandoned buildings.” He smirked. “Let’s call this a social experiment. What do the elite of the Lycan community do for fun while rogues and the less privileged starve.” A silent look held between us for a while. Just then I felt a beeping sound against my dress. I pulled out my scrying glass just as the screen lit up and the words “Help me… Thora” came on screen I didn’t even stop to think before I rushed out, Killian followed behind me. I’d had this pang in my chest and when I saw the scribble from Thora, it deepened. Our dorm rooms were along the same hallway. I came to a halt there trying to find her in the dark. The lights were conveniently out. “There’s someone over there.” Killian pointed towards the end of the stretch and I ran there and froze. Lying in a pool of her own blood was Thora. Her scrying glass was still in her hand but she’d passed out already. “Oh, Goddess. Help me stop the bleeding!” Killian ripped his shirt and handed it over to me, no hesitation. Somehow someone must’ve seen us there because in a few minutes half the gala and a group of healers had arrived. Apollo rushed to my side checking the blood stains to be sure they weren’t mine. “Are you hurt?” “N-no it’s Thora…” “Get her to Medcare now!” He ordered as the healers lifted her into a stretcher. Alpha Odin was asking me questions but I couldn’t concentrate. That gut feeling was still there. Who could’ve done this? “Not now, father, let’s give her time to calm down.” Apollo spoke on my behalf. “Seal the Academy now! No one leaves until we find the culprit.” Alpha Odin thundered. I followed the healers closely as they carried Thora, I felt her grip my hand suddenly, her eyes barely opened as she whispered so only I could hear… “T-they came for… you.”
