Untitled Episode
My parents died because people feared their strength. Now, I felt like I was dying only because I was too weak.
The murmurs and vicious laughs swirling around me weren’t the only thing that felt wrong. Sweat pooled at the base of my neck, soaking my hair. My hands had a tremor I couldn’t stop and my head felt like it was being split into a million different ways.
I’d experienced this feeling before and on multiple occasions in the last month. Something was coming, I knew that much but I couldn’t tell what. I blinked slowly trying to hold on to consciousness.
A swift kick landed against my side and I rolled to the floor “Are you deaf?” Lilith’s cold voice brought me back to the present.
My eyes slowly moved across the room at all the faces looking down at me like I was the scum of the earth.
I was still kneeling on the cafeteria floor, the tray of food still spilled on the floor near me and Lilith’s dress still carrying the stain from when I’d accidentally bumped into her. You’d think my own luck wouldn’t be against me.
“She must be a stupid too, Omega’s should know their place, how dare she insult you like this,” Julia, Lilith’s glorified helper, pitched in behind her.
“She’s lower than the lowest of Omega’s,” Lilith replied then turned to me again, a devious smirk slid onto her face. “I guess you’ve forgotten your place, haven’t you Daphne?”
I remained quiet, my left hand suppressing the tremor in my right. I’d gone numb to the maltreatment long ago and I knew it infuriated Lilith more when I didn’t cry or beg.
Lilith’s smirk faded, a crease formed between her eyebrows.
“Since you’re so hungry, eat it all off the floor. Every last bite.”
I glanced once at the bread and picked it up without any hesitation. I raised it to my mouth as the others made sounds of disgust.
“That’s enough, Lilith.”
The bread paused at my lips as we turned in the direction of the voice.
Apollo. I nearly rolled my eyes.
“Do you have any idea what she did to me?” Lilith whined, already clinging onto him.
“I’ve told you not to demean yourself by engaging with the likes of her.” He looked down at me and scoffed. “I’ll buy you new clothes.”
The shaking finally stopped and my head stopped spinning. I put the food back on the tray and stood up. Lilith and Apollo kept chattering in the background then he kissed her on the lips as I turned to leave.
“Wait.”
I paused without turning.
I felt him walk towards then he placed a piece of the food I’d missed on the tray.
“Do you intend to eat that?”
“What I do is none of your concern.”
“Maybe one of these days you should actually try standing up for yourself.” He whispered
I c****d my head to meet his cold gaze.
“What’s it to you?”
“It’s pathetic how you respond to being belittled. You’re weak.”
My fingers gripped the tray harder. “You know nothing about me.”
“No, perhaps not. What I do know is, you’re weak and I despise weakness.” With that he just turned around and left with Lilith on his arm.
His words did not leave me. He was no different from the rest of them, defending Lilith regardless of how bitchy she was being but he had the audacity to call me weak for enduring her assaults.
I dropped the tray on the closest table and left.
Here at Mooncrest Academy all that mattered was status and strength. And I was used to Lilith’s cruelty, but the spark of anger that Apollo’s words had created in me wouldn’t fizzle out anytime soon.
Lunch break ended and as I changed into my clothes for battle tactics and defense class I was still deciding whether or not to let it go.
I didn’t let it go.
I stood at the back of class as usual observing the sparring session. Apollo was the star of the class as expected, he was the future Alpha King afterall. I watched as he knocked down a third opponent, all Beta level.
“Wonderful, Apollo, I see you’ve learned some new techniques.” The teacher gave him a pat on the back. “Does anyone else want to try?”
I looked around the room then casually walked to the front.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Lilith sneered. “Don’t tell me you think you can go against Apollo?”
Someone in the corner, another omega I recognized from a few of my classes whispered for me to come back. I ignored everyone and stood in the center opposite Apollo.
He didn’t say anything through words or expressions.
“The rank imbalance between you two is great. I wouldn’t advise you to—“
“I’m ready to go if he is.” I interrupted the teacher who just shook his head and stepped aside.
“Your funeral, Take her down baby!” Lilith screamed.
Apollo and I squared up, the air in the room settled into quiet tension. My eyes watched his feet carefully and the position of his shoulders. From earlier matches I’d noticed his right shoulder twitched slightly before he made a move.
He twitched, I stepped out of the way, gliding gracefully on my feet. That alone made people gasp.
Apollo repositioned facing me now his eyes narrowed slightly. I couldn’t tell if it was out of interest or annoyance.
He attacked again, I saw the shoulder twitch and ducked out of the way then swiftly elbowed him in the gut while he was distracted.
“No way…” someone muttered from the crowd.
This time I saw Apollo smirk from the side. He whipped around fully before I could anticipate his attack and knocked me down to the ground with just one hit.
He kneeled by me and spoke quietly only enough for me to hear. “Good job spotting my tics but you’re still not good enough.”
Then he rose, already walking out of the circle. My hands balled into a fist as I jumped up running towards him.
“Apollo look out!” Lilith yelled.
He moved away just in time to avoid my punch. Instead he grabbed my hand and pinned it to my back while his other arm came around my neck.
“Yield.”
I moved my right leg scraping against his shin hard, his grip loosened enough for me to slip out. I grabbed the hand that had been around my neck and twisted hard enough to ear a slight c***k.
Lilith lurched forward. Apollo's hand came up, stopping her. He broke free of my hold as we fully began to throw punches.
He ducked and hit me in the side and kicked my feet out from under me. I rolled away, rising up slowly I felt blood trickle down from my nose. I wiped it away with my sleeve and charged for him again. He grabbed me and slammed me down hard again this time he straddled me, pinning my arms to my side.
“We can keep doing this, but you will end up in Medcare for the rest of the month at least.”
I resisted as I tried to wriggle free. Suddenly, that familiar sensation struck, my body went limp as heat gathered in my chest. The tremors in my fingers began spreading up to my heart with a surge.
I let out a gasp as my eyes locked with Apollo’s. His eyes slowly moved down to his own hand which was shaking similarly to mine.
All my senses heightened, Sweat glazed my skin, my eyes widened. When his skin touched mine I burned hotter but I didn’t feel pain… it was like pleasure and yearning clashing in a way that made my chest ache. The room suddenly grew smaller and everyone else disappeared leaving just us, I smelt my own dread oozing off my skin as a slow heavy realization dawned on me.
I’d known something was coming, felt it every time the heat struck and my hands shook… but I could never have imagined this, and with him? Of all people.
Apollo growled, and in a second completed the thought for me.
“Mate!”
