“The Office”

1010 Words
Two days had passed since the attack. Two strange days, far too quiet for Amaris’s liking. The mansion remained under constant surveillance, and the warriors patrolled every corner of Crimson Moon as if expecting another attack at any moment. Even so, what unsettled Amaris the most wasn’t the danger outside… it was Kael, because she constantly felt his eyes on her, as if he were trying to uncover something hidden beneath her skin. But at the same time… he also protected her. That morning, Amaris left the bedroom after noticing Kael had disappeared again before dawn. She wasn’t exactly sure why she was looking for him. Maybe boredom… or maybe curiosity. “Where could Kael have gone?” she wondered. She walked through the enormous halls of the mansion until she stopped in front of the Alpha’s office. The door was slightly open, and Amaris hesitated for a few seconds. She knew perfectly well that Kael hated anyone touching his things. But when she heard no sound inside, she slowly stepped in anyway. Maps, documents, and several ancient daggers were neatly arranged across the desk. Everything in that room screamed power and control. Amaris moved carefully, observing the massive bookshelves filled with books. “I didn’t know you read…” she murmured to herself. She picked up a random book. It was heavy and old. But just as she tried to open it, something slipped from between the pages. Amaris quickly lowered her gaze. It was a photograph. She picked it up carefully… and then she saw it. Kael was in the picture, but he wasn’t the cold man she knew. In the photograph, he was actually smiling. Beside him stood an incredibly beautiful woman with dark hair and light eyes. She was holding him, and Kael… allowed the contact. That was what shocked Amaris the most, because she had never seen him like that before. He looked like a completely different man. Her fingers tightened slightly around the photograph as she stared at the woman. Something strange twisted in her chest, an unexpected discomfort. “So she’s the reason…” she whispered without realizing it. “What are you doing here?” Kael’s voice made her jump. Amaris immediately looked up. Kael stood by the doorway. His expression changed completely the moment he saw her holding the photograph. The atmosphere tensed instantly. Kael walked toward her with slow, dangerous steps. “I asked you a question.” Amaris swallowed softly. “I… was looking for you.” Kael didn’t respond. His eyes dropped directly to the photograph, and something dark crossed his gaze. Without another word, he snatched the picture from her hands roughly. Amaris frowned in obvious confusion. “It’s just a picture.” “Don’t ever come in here without my permission again.” Kael shoved the photograph back inside the book and closed it harshly. Amaris watched him for a few seconds before speaking slowly. “Who was she?” Kael didn’t answer the question. “That’s none of your business.” Amaris crossed her arms. “Then she really was important.” Kael lifted his gaze toward her, and Amaris instantly understood she had touched something dangerous… very dangerous. “I told you it’s none of your business.” But this time, Amaris didn’t back away. In fact, she stepped closer to him. “So all of this…?” she asked, looking directly at him. “All that coldness comes from a woman?” Kael’s eyes hardened. “Watch what you say.” But Amaris had already understood too much. Now everything made sense. The way he distrusted everyone, his obsessive need for control. The way he spoke about love as if it were a weakness. It all came from that woman. Kael tried to walk away, but Amaris spoke again. “She destroyed you.” Her words were a statement, not a question. The silence inside the office became heavy. Kael clenched his jaw. “You know nothing.” “I know enough.” Kael let out a dry laugh, but there was no humor in it. “And what exactly do you think you know?” Amaris looked straight into his eyes. “That someone hurt you so badly… that now you’re trying to become a monster before you ever feel anything again.” Kael went completely still. The words seemed to hit him harder than she expected. “Don’t talk about things you don’t understand.” Amaris looked at him with a reckless idea forming in her mind, mixed with unease. Then, unexpectedly, she smiled faintly. “I’m going to make you forget her.” Kael frowned. “What?” “That woman,” she said fearlessly. “I’m going to make you stop thinking about her.” For a moment, Kael simply stared at her, as if he had just heard the most ridiculous thing in the world. Then he let out a laugh as cold as ice. “You have far too much confidence for someone in your position.” Amaris didn’t back down. “And what if I succeed?” Kael slowly stepped closer until he was standing right in front of her. “You won’t.” His voice came out deep, firm, and completely certain. “The only thing that exists between us is an arrangement. s*x, heirs… and nothing more.” Amaris tilted her head slightly. “That’s what you say now.” Kael’s eyes darkened slightly. “I’m not going to fall in love with you.” She smiled again, but this time there was something challenging in her gaze. “We’ll see.” Kael let out a dry laugh. “Women always think they can change a man.” “Maybe because some of them can.” Kael said nothing else. He grabbed Amaris by the arm and pulled her out of the office. “Don’t ever enter my office again without my consent,” he told her seriously. And without waiting for a response, he led her toward the grand balcony of the mansion.
