Kael kept staring at Amaris in silence.
She tried to remain calm, even though her legs felt weak.
Then, one of the guards rushed forward.
“Alpha!”
Kael barely shifted his gaze.
“What?”
“The poison from the dagger…”
Everyone turned toward Amaris.
The small cut on her hand was beginning to darken around the edges.
One of the healers widened his eyes in shock.
“That poison should’ve paralyzed her already…”
Panic rose in Amaris’s chest, because she felt nothing. No dizziness, no pain… nothing at all.
The attacker laughed again from the floor.
“She doesn’t even smell like one of you…”
Before he could continue, Aldo stepped in.
“He’s delirious,” he said sharply. “Dark poison affects the mind.”
Taking advantage of the tension in the room, Amaris slowly slipped her hand inside the sleeve of her dress.
No one noticed, not even Kael.
Her fingers quickly found the small hidden pouch she always carried with her.
Her heart pounded violently while the man on the floor kept talking.
“She’s not—”
Kael struck him brutally before he could finish.
Everyone turned toward the attacker at the impact.
And that single second was all Amaris needed.
She took a small amount of powder between her fingers and discreetly pressed it onto the wound.
The effect was immediate. The burning faded, and the skin began closing slowly.
By the time everyone looked back at her, the cut already looked much better.
One of the healers stepped forward in surprise.
“The poison should’ve spread the infection…”
Amaris reacted immediately.
She closed her hand and took a deep breath, trying to stay calm.
“It wasn’t deep,” she said quickly. “It only grazed me.”
One of the council members frowned, clearly believing the attacker’s words.
“Then she really is a wolf.”
Amaris tried to keep her expression neutral, even though inside, her nerves were spiraling out of control.
Kael studied the wound for a few seconds before shifting his gaze toward the unconscious attacker.
The doubt that had appeared in his eyes… slowly disappeared, because he had just watched her heal in front of everyone.
Kael stared at the unconscious attacker lying on the floor. His eyes burned with fury.
“Lock him in the dungeons of the north wing,” he ordered in a terrifyingly calm voice. “I want him alive.”
One of the guards hesitated.
“And if he attacks again?”
Kael barely looked at him before answering.
“Then rip his legs off.”
No one questioned the order.
Kael turned his gaze back to Amaris and saw the blood on her hand.
Something inside him hardened even more.
“And no one touches him until I interrogate him myself.”
He grabbed Amaris by the wrist and started walking with her toward the inside of the mansion.
No one dared stop the Alpha.
Amaris walked behind him, trying to stay calm, though inside, doubt was suffocating her. She didn’t know if Kael had discovered the truth.
As soon as they reached the room, Kael shut the door forcefully.
Then he turned toward her.
“Show me your hand.”
Amaris hesitated for only a second.
Kael noticed.
“Now.”
She slowly extended her injured hand.
Kael held it between his fingers and examined the cut carefully.
The wound had almost disappeared.
That should’ve reassured her… but it did the opposite, because Kael kept staring too closely.
As if he were trying to find something hidden beneath her skin.
“That poison kills within minutes,” he finally said.
Amaris tried to sound calm.
“Maybe it wasn’t enough poison.”
Kael didn’t answer. He brought her hand closer to him.
And then… he smelled it.
Amaris felt her heart nearly stop.
She tried to pull her hand away nervously.
“I’m fine.”
“No one is going to touch you inside my mansion,” he said coldly.
His eyes lowered once more to the nearly healed cut.
Then he slowly lifted his gaze back to her.
“You stepped in front of me.”
Amaris blinked softly, not expecting to hear that.
“I just reacted…”
Kael slowly released her hand.
But he didn’t step away.
“You could’ve died.”
Kael’s voice had changed slightly. It was still cold… but there was something different beneath it.
“I wasn’t going to let them hurt you,” she said quietly.
Kael stared at her in silence, as if trying to understand why the hell she had done that.
Amaris stopped breathing for a moment when she felt his fingers brushing a strand of hair away from her face.
Then he kissed her.
Unexpectedly, he kissed her on impulse, driven by desire.
After the kiss, Kael stepped back a few paces and ran a hand through his hair, visibly irritated with himself for what he was feeling.
He was trying to understand why the hell it bothered him so much to see her afraid.
Then, without saying another word, Kael left the room.
He stopped in a corner near the staircase, and there, he overheard something unsettling from a few wolves.
“That woman will bring ruin to Crimson Moon. The Alpha is too blind to see it,” one of them said.
Kael stormed down the stairs and confronted them the way he always did.
Two council members froze when they saw him appear.
“Repeat what you just said,” Kael ordered.
Neither of them answered.
Kael descended fully toward them.
“Speak.”
One of them swallowed hard.
“We just believe that… that woman is a danger.”
Kael let out a cold laugh.
“And since when do you decide who’s a danger to my pack?”
The men stayed silent.
Kael looked at them as if he were seconds away from tearing out their throats.
“Next time you talk about my wife behind my back… make sure I can’t hear you.”
