The Dagger

The place was exclusive, filled with expensive lights and conversations echoing from every corner. As soon as they arrived, drinks and a private room were offered to them. It didn’t take long for several women to approach, and one of them sat beside Kael, smiling with obvious interest. “I’ve always wanted to meet the great Alpha…” Kael barely looked at her. “Let’s not waste time,” he said simply. The woman smiled even wider and took his hand, guiding him toward a room. The door closed behind them. She tried to get close to him, to touch him, to kiss him… but something wasn’t working. Kael was there… but not really. His mind wasn’t in that room. It was somewhere else—with someone else. He pulled away the moment he came back to himself. “Stop.” The woman looked at him, confused. “What?” “I’m not interested anymore.” Without waiting for a response, he opened the door and walked out. Aldo saw him return and raised a brow in surprise. “That fast?” “I’m leaving.” “What? But—” “Stay if you want.” And without another word, Kael walked out. The ride back was stormy, but inside… he was trying to calm the storm of emotions building within him. When he entered the mansion, everything was quiet. He went straight to the bedroom and opened the door slowly. Amaris was asleep. The light from the bedside table illuminated her face, giving her a peaceful appearance that didn’t match the chaos inside him. He stood there watching her for a few seconds. Then he slowly approached, lifting his hand as if he were going to touch her… but stopped. His own reaction irritated him. He lowered his hand, exhaled sharply, and finally lay down beside her, staring at the ceiling. Then Amaris moved slightly, turning toward him… and opened her eyes. Their gazes met. Neither of them spoke, but something changed in that moment. Kael didn’t think, didn’t measure, didn’t hesitate. He leaned toward her and kissed her. It wasn’t a soft kiss—it was one filled with passion. “I… I…” Amaris tried to speak, but couldn’t. She kissed him back, surprised at first, but without pulling away. And in that moment, there were no words. No coldness. Only a tension that had been building for far too long. A low growl rumbled from Kael’s throat. Amaris felt her heartbeat spiral out of control, her breathing turning uneven. It wasn’t fear… not entirely. It was something else. Something she didn’t know how to name. Kael moved lower slowly, his kisses no longer just impulse, but more deliberate now, more careful… as if, without meaning to, he was learning her rhythm. The initial roughness faded. And for one instant… just one… Kael stopped being the cold, merciless Alpha. Amaris closed her eyes and let herself be carried away. When it was over, Kael slipped back into the role of the cold wolf. He moved to the side and turned his back to her. “Don’t confuse this,” he said at last, his voice cold again. “I’m doing this because I need an heir.” Amaris remained silent. She already knew that perfectly well. “The sooner it happens… the sooner you’ll be able to leave,” he continued. Kael’s words hurt more than she wanted to admit, but she said nothing. She simply lowered her gaze while trying to steady her breathing. Then— A loud bang shook the door. “Alpha!” Kael frowned immediately. “What is it?” The guard’s voice sounded frantic from the other side. “We caught one of the men responsible for the attack!” Kael stood instantly. “Is he alive?” “Yes… but he just killed two of our wolves trying to escape.” Kael’s eyes darkened completely. Without wasting a second, he grabbed a black shirt and pulled it on quickly. The Alpha’s presence returned immediately—cold and dominant. Amaris got out of bed as well. “Do not leave this room,” Kael ordered without looking at her. But she didn’t answer. Kael left the room and stormed down the stairs. Shouts and chaos echoed from below. When he reached the grand hall, several wolves were restraining a blood-covered man. His breathing was savage. Part of his face had already shifted into wolf form. Kael descended the last few steps slowly. “Who sent you?” The man let out a rough laugh. “Go to hell, Blackthorn.” Kael grabbed him by the throat brutally and lifted him off the ground. “I’ll give you one chance.” The man smiled… but then suddenly jerked his arm. A dagger appeared out of nowhere. Everything happened too fast. The attacker lunged straight at Kael. “Kael!” someone shouted. But before the dagger could reach his chest, Amaris appeared. She grabbed the man’s arm and twisted a precise point on his wrist with perfect accuracy. The attack veered off course. The blade barely managed to graze Amaris’s hand. A small cut—but enough. She let out a soft gasp. Kael froze for a second when he saw her. And then… he lost control. A roar shook the entire mansion. He seized the attacker and hurled him against a column with such force that the wood cracked. The wolves immediately stepped back. Kael walked toward him slowly, his eyes glowing with fury. “Who the hell are you?” he growled. The man spat blood, then looked directly at Amaris. A twisted smile spread across his face. “The human…” he murmured. “She won’t be able to hide forever.” Amaris felt the blood drain from her body. Kael’s eyes slowly shifted toward her. The man on the floor began laughing weakly, coughing up blood. “Look at her…” he muttered. “She doesn’t even smell like one of you…” Kael slowly released the attacker. His eyes never left Amaris. But before he could say a single word, Aldo stepped in. “He’s delirious,” he said firmly. “The dagger was coated with dark poison. He’s lost his mind already.” One of the council wolves frowned.
