The wind hit Amaris’s face the moment they stepped onto the balcony.
From there, most of Crimson Moon could be seen—the warriors standing guard and the massive mountains surrounding the territory.
Kael finally released her arm.
“Do you see all of that?” he asked coldly.
Amaris observed the view for a few seconds before nodding.
“That pack is the only thing that matters to me.”
There wasn’t the slightest hesitation in his voice. He was completely certain of what he was saying.
“And having an heir. Those are the only things I care about.”
Amaris turned her head toward him.
“But you’re immortal.”
Kael let out a laugh that sounded almost mocking, though it wasn’t entirely that.
“Not exactly. Not everything is the way you think.”
She frowned slightly, clearly surprised.
“What do you mean?”
Kael rested both hands on the stone railing and looked around.
“I won’t die from natural causes. But there are poisons… and daggers capable of killing even an Alpha like me.”
Amaris watched him in silence. Then she understood part of that obsession.
“You’re afraid of leaving the pack alone… afraid that everything you’ve built could disappear.”
Kael shook his head immediately. He knew perfectly well what he feared and what he didn’t.
“No. What I feared… already happened. And it will never happen again.”
Amaris grew curious instantly.
“What does that mean? I want to understand.”
Kael turned his face toward her.
“I’ve already revealed too much about myself. I won’t say anything else.”
Before Amaris could ask another question, a maid appeared near the balcony and lowered her head.
“Alpha Kael… with your permission, Gretel Green is here to see you.”
Kael showed no reaction.
“Take her to the main hall.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
The maid quickly left.
Amaris crossed her arms in a gesture she didn’t even realize she’d made until afterward. It looked almost territorial.
“Who is Gretel Green?” she asked with interest.
“She’s my business partner.”
Amaris didn’t like that very much, even if she didn’t fully understand why.
“You have a lot of businesses. You’re not only powerful… you’re rich too.”
“Yes. I’ve worked hard for it.”
Before Amaris could reply, they walked toward the mansion’s grand hall.
And the moment they entered, a tall, elegant woman rose from the sofa.
She had reddish hair, a confident smile, and eyes that lit up the second they landed on Kael.
“Kael…”
The woman walked straight toward him and, before Amaris could even understand what was happening, kissed him passionately.
Amaris’s heart burned instantly.
Jealousy exploded inside her before she could even think.
She grabbed the woman by the hair and yanked her away, throwing her onto the sofa.
“Don’t you ever kiss my husband again!”
A brief silence followed as Amaris processed what she had just done.
Gretel’s eyes widened in complete shock.
Kael watched the scene without moving… though a small laugh nearly escaped him.
He hid it immediately by clearing his throat.
Gretel quickly stood from the sofa.
“Who the hell is she?”
Kael answered calmly.
“Amaris. My wife.”
Gretel looked surprised for a few seconds before letting out an amused laugh.
“Now I understand the attitude.”
Her eyes moved back to Amaris.
“Although I have to admit, after what happened with Belilah… I never thought you’d take another Luna.”
Amaris felt instant curiosity at hearing that name again.
“I don’t know what happened with that Belilah woman,” she said confidently. “But one thing you can be sure of… I’m nothing like her.”
The atmosphere turned even more hostile, and Kael immediately spoke.
“Enough.”
His voice came out colder than before.
“Belilah’s name is not mentioned inside this mansion.”
Gretel slightly raised both hands.
“I should’ve expected that. Sorry.”
Then she looked back at Kael.
“I came to stay for a while.”
Amaris reacted immediately.
“That’s not going to happen.”
Gretel raised an amused eyebrow.
“Of course it is. I’m Kael’s business partner in several ventures, and my presence here is necessary.”
Amaris was about to answer again when Kael intervened.
“Gretel, come to the study.”
Then he added seriously,
“We need to speak alone.”
That irritated Amaris even more.
But before she could say anything, Kael had already left with Gretel toward the study.
Amaris remained frozen in the middle of the hall, watching them disappear down the corridor.
The discomfort inside her only grew stronger.
She slowly walked toward the study.
The door wasn’t fully closed, and then she heard Kael’s voice from inside.
“While you’re in this mansion… don’t overstep with my wife again.”
Gretel let out a small laugh.
“What’s wrong, Kael? Are you in love?”
There was a brief silence. Then Kael answered with a coldness that pierced straight through Amaris’s chest.
“That will never happen again.”
Gretel said nothing, listening carefully as Kael continued.
“I will never love anyone again. My heart was only capable of it once.”
Those words hurt Amaris far more than she expected. She stood still for just a second longer.
Then she slowly stepped back before they could catch her listening.
She walked to the bedroom feeling something heavy inside her chest.
When she closed the door, she leaned her back against it and closed her eyes.
And then she understood something she hadn’t wanted to admit until now.
She would never have a place in Kael’s heart.
It didn’t matter how much she challenged him.
It didn’t matter how hard she tried to get close to him.
Kael still loved his former Luna… and he probably always would.
“He will never love me.”
