Chapter-1 : My Life
John Harris woke up to the sound of his alarm clock blaring, the harsh noise dragging him out of a deep sleep. He groaned, reached over, and slapped the snooze button, craving just a few more minutes of peace. The sun was just beginning to filter through the curtains, casting a warm glow across the bedroom. John turned over and looked at his wife, Emily, who was still fast asleep. Her chestnut hair spilled over the pillow, and a serene expression softened her features. He smiled, grateful for her presence in his life. After a moment of quiet appreciation, John forced himself out of bed. He stretched, feeling the familiar creak of his joints as he did so. At 38, he wasn't old by any means, but he wasn't as young as he used to be either. The daily routine of work and family life had a way of wearing on a person. John headed to the bathroom, splashing cold water on his face to wake himself up. He glanced in the mirror, seeing the same face he saw every day—short brown hair, a bit of stubble on his chin, and the faint lines of age starting to etch around his eyes. He quickly brushed his teeth and dressed in his usual attire: jeans and a button-up shirt. Nothing fancy, just comfortable and practical. Downstairs, the smell of coffee greeted him. John smiled again; Emily must have set the coffee maker before bed. He poured himself a cup and took a moment to savor the rich aroma before taking a sip. The warmth spread through him, waking him up fully. He heard the sound of small feet padding down the stairs and turned to see his children, Jake and Lily, making their way to the kitchen. Jake, the older of the two at 10 years old, was already dressed for school, his backpack slung over one shoulder. Lily, who was 7, still had sleep in her eyes and was clutching her favorite stuffed bunny. "Morning, Dad," Jake said, grabbing a granola bar from the counter. "Morning, buddy," John replied, ruffling his son's hair. "Ready for school?" Jake nodded. "Yeah, we have a field trip to the science museum today. It's gonna be awesome!" Lily, not quite as enthusiastic about waking up early, climbed onto a chair and rested her head on the table. "Do I have to go to school today, Daddy?" John chuckled. "Yes, you do, sweetie. But don't worry, it's Friday. Just one more day and then you have the whole weekend to play." Lily sighed dramatically but didn't argue further. Emily appeared in the doorway, looking as beautiful as ever despite just waking up. She smiled at John and then at the kids. "Good morning, everyone," she said, her voice cheerful. John walked over and gave her a quick kiss. "Morning, Em. Sleep well?" "Like a rock," she replied. "Thanks for getting the kids started. I'll take over from here." John nodded and grabbed his car keys. "I've got an early meeting today, so I need to head out. Have a great day, everyone." As he left the house and climbed into his car, John felt a familiar sense of contentment. His life might be ordinary, but it was a good life. He had a loving family, a steady job at a local marketing firm, and a close-knit group of friends. He started the car and backed out of the driveway, heading towards the office. The drive to work was uneventful, the usual morning traffic filling the streets of Elmwood. John took the opportunity to think about the day ahead. He had a meeting with a new client this morning, followed by a project deadline in the afternoon. It would be a busy day, but he liked staying busy. It kept his mind sharp and gave him a sense of accomplishment. As he pulled into the parking lot of Harris & Co. Marketing, John couldn't help but feel a pang of pride. The company, started by his father decades ago, had grown into a successful business under his leadership. It wasn't always easy, but John had worked hard to maintain the firm's reputation and ensure its continued growth. He greeted his colleagues as he walked into the office, making his way to his corner office. The space was filled with natural light, thanks to the large windows that overlooked the town. He set his briefcase down and took a seat at his desk, ready to tackle the day's challenges. The morning flew by in a blur of meetings and phone calls. Before he knew it, it was lunchtime. John decided to step out for a bit, taking a short walk to clear his head. Elmwood was a charming town, with tree-lined streets and a friendly atmosphere. As he strolled through the park, he spotted his best friend, Mike, sitting on a bench with a book in hand. "Hey, Mike," John called out, walking over to join him. Mike looked up and grinned. "John! Taking a break from conquering the marketing world?" John laughed and sat down beside him. "Something like that. Needed some fresh air. How's the book?" Mike, a history professor at the local college, held up the thick volume. "Just some light reading on ancient mythology. Fascinating stuff." John raised an eyebrow. "Mythology, huh? Find anything interesting?" Mike's eyes lit up. "Oh, plenty. Did you know that in some cultures, gods would occasionally walk among humans, living ordinary lives until their memories were triggered by some event? It's a common theme in many ancient stories." John chuckled. "Sounds like the plot of a fantasy novel." Mike shrugged. "Maybe, but it's interesting to think about. What if there were gods living among us, and we just didn't know it?" John shook his head, still smiling. "I'll leave the mythology to you, Mike. I've got enough on my plate with the real world." They chatted for a bit longer before John had to head back to the office. The afternoon was just as busy as the morning, and by the time he finally wrapped up his work for the day, he was more than ready to head home. As he drove back, his thoughts returned to his family. Emily had texted him earlier, reminding him that they had a family movie night planned. It was a tradition they had started when the kids were little, a way to unwind and spend quality time together. Tonight's movie was one of Jake's favorites, a science fiction adventure that John secretly enjoyed just as much as his son did. When he walked through the front door, the smell of popcorn greeted him. Emily was in the kitchen, putting the finishing touches on their dinner. The kids were already in their pajamas, eagerly waiting in the living room. "Daddy's home!" Lily shouted, running over to give him a hug. John scooped her up and kissed her cheek. "Hey, princess. Ready for movie night?" She nodded enthusiastically. "Mommy made popcorn, and Jake picked the movie!" John set her down and went to give Emily a hug. "Smells amazing in here," he said, kissing her cheek. She smiled. "Thanks. How was your day?" "Busy, but good," he replied. "I'm ready to relax with my favorite people." They gathered in the living room, settling onto the couch with bowls of popcorn. The movie started, and John felt a wave of contentment wash over him. This was what he lived for—the simple, joyful moments with his family. The outside world could be chaotic, but here, in their cozy home, everything was perfect. As the movie played, John couldn't help but think back to his conversation with Mike. The idea of gods living among humans seemed ridiculous, but there was something oddly compelling about it. He shook his head, pushing the thought aside. He had everything he needed right here. The myths and legends could stay in the past where they belonged. The movie ended with Jake and Lily barely managing to keep their eyes open. Emily carried Lily to her bedroom, and John guided Jake upstairs. After tucking them in and exchanging goodnight kisses, John and Emily retired to their bedroom. As he lay in bed, John felt an odd sense of unease, a faint nagging at the back of his mind. It was probably just the stress from work and his conversation with Mike about gods and myths still lingering. He tried to shake it off, reminding himself that he had a good life, a wonderful family, and nothing to worry about. The next morning, John woke early, feeling surprisingly refreshed. He decided to go for a jog before work, something he hadn't done in a while. The cool morning air felt invigorating as he ran through the quiet streets of Elmwood. The rhythmic pounding of his feet on the pavement helped clear his mind. As he rounded a corner, he nearly collided with Luthor, a local mechanic who was out walking his dog. John and Luthor had known each other for years, often exchanging friendly banter whenever they crossed paths. "Hey, John! Almost knocked me over there," Luthor said with a laugh, pulling his dog back. "Sorry about that, Luthor. Just trying to wake up before the day gets crazy," John replied, panting slightly. Luthor grinned. "Well, you certainly woke me up. How's Emily and the kids?" "They're great. We had a fun movie night last night," John said, catching his breath. "Good to hear. You know, John, I've always admired how you balance everything. Family, work, and still finding time to keep fit." John chuckled. "It's a juggling act, but I wouldn't have it any other way." They chatted for a few more minutes before John continued his run. By the time he got home, the unease from the previous night had mostly faded. He took a quick shower, had breakfast with his family, and then headed to work. The day was shaping up to be another busy one, but John thrived on the challenge. He spent the morning in back-to-back meetings, strategizing with his team on upcoming campaigns. By lunch, he was ready for a break. He decided to grab a sandwich from a nearby deli and eat at his desk while catching up on emails. As he reached for his drink, he accidentally knocked over a stack of papers. John cursed under his breath and bent down to pick them up. As he did, he felt a strange surge of energy course through his body. The sensation was both exhilarating and terrifying, like an electric current running through his veins. For a moment, the world seemed to shimmer and blur around him. He heard a low, ominous hum, and his vision darkened at the edges. Then, as quickly as it had come, the feeling vanished. John sat back in his chair, his heart racing. What just happened? He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. Maybe it was just stress or lack of sleep catching up with him. But deep down, John knew it was something more. He pushed the incident to the back of his mind, determined to focus on work. That evening, as he drove home, John couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. He kept glancing in the rearview mirror, half-expecting to see someone or something following him. But the roads were empty, and he told himself he was just being paranoid. Emily greeted him at the door with a warm smile and a kiss. "How was your day?" she asked. "Busy, as usual," John replied, trying to sound normal. "But good. How about you?" "Same here. The kids are in the backyard playing. Why don't you join them while I finish dinner?" John nodded and headed outside. Seeing Jake and Lily laughing and running around helped lift his spirits. He joined in their game of tag, feeling the last remnants of the day's stress melt away. As they sat down to dinner, John felt a sudden chill. The sensation was fleeting but intense, like a cold wind blowing through the room. He looked around, but nothing seemed out of place. Emily and the kids continued chatting and eating, unaware of his unease.
