The Lakehouse
YAZ
“ Seriously Cat how many bags do you need?”
She laughs “ it’s a whole summer Yaz I need options”
I look at the bags with absolutely terror “ There are options and then there is this” I motion to the 14 bags we are trying to stuff in her Jeep.
She groans “ well I can’t leave anything”
I pinch my nose exasperated “ okay fine you drive your Jeep we will put mine and Marisole’s bags in here and I will drive my car up you can follow me”
Mari laughs “ I thought the whole point is us driving up together”
“Yeah well do you see any other options with Princess Peaches bags? Plus I have work so I may not want to walk everyday, it will work out better”
They both nod and Mari and I throw our bags in the jeep going to my tiny ford fiesta as we all start our trip.
We get about 15 minutes from the city before Cat calls “ hey I forgot to pack the bud”
“ Seriously? You have 14 bags and not one of them has bud?”
She groans “ Well not all of us have natural beauty to work with Yaz” The lies of this woman Cat is 5’9 the tallest of us all she has olive colored skin a sleek athletic build with a defined face and jaw, bright hazel eyes and long raven black hair.
“ Yeah whatever let’s just stop at the dispensary there is one up by Big Bend we can stop at as well”
We keep driving stopping at the dispensaries in the way to my family’s old lake house 3 hours away from the city.
My name is Yazmine Elizabeth Monroe I am considered a “Child genius” I graduated high school at 14 and started college. At the age of 18 I am officially a college graduate with a degree in education. Yes I want to be a teacher but not just any teacher. After the summer I will be moving back to my old pack territory and joining the soon to be combined school of Blood Forrest and Blood river pack. The education in my pack was pretty much total sh*t when I was a kid and I ended up doing school online from the time I was 7.
I want the soon to be combined pack education to be better than what I was offered as a kid. I got away with a lot considering I am a pack princess. My father is the Alpha of blood river pack my brother before he passed would have taken over but since I have no interest in the title my parents made a deal with the pack across the river to become one mutual territory.
It’s not all bad my grandfather never lived in pack territory. Much like him I can not be detected by hunters or other supernaturals. We are considered Mali-mutes, he has ran a general store in the small human town by the dam known as lakeside since my mother was little. As a graduation gift he gave me the old lake house that him and my grandmother raised my mom in I use to stay there every summer and help with the store until I went off to college.
“ I’m in the corner watching you kiss her”
My best friend Mari nudges my arm as we start singing the song the phone rings again and I put it on speaker as we all belt out the iconic Robyn song.
I am so glad I am making a trip with them Marisol and Cathleen still have 2 years left in college we all had the same major and last year I was their tutor we instantly became besties and all moved in together my senior year.
I know I will miss my friends after the summer but I am hoping to break to them my true Identity and what I really am during this trip. Before we get too much farther, the answer is yes we all smoke we are college girls that all have really crazy family dialects and we like being able to laugh and have fun. We are by no means delinquents we just like to have fun.
As we pull into the sleepy town of lakeside I stop at my Grandpa’s store to grab the keys to the house.
“There’s my girl!”
I smile hugging him “Hi papa”
He hands me the keys “ okay I fully stocked the pantry, fridge, and freezer for you kids if you need anything let me know”
“ Jam?”
He chuckles “ Still stockpiled in the basement also I visited the dispensary for you at big bend I figured you girls would need more supplies.”
I hug him again “ Thanks papa I will see you in the morning”
He smiles “8am missy”
“ Yes sir”
I heed back to my car pulling off down the street to the lake house. This place hasn’t changed in the 4 years I have been gone. I’m not really mad about it, it’s comfortable and familiar as we start unpacking our stuff in the big house.
I can’t help but look forward to this summer and spending one last summer with my two best friends.
