Chapter 1. The invitation
Emma!! “ You got an invite,” Cindy yelled. She dropped it on the table before leaving. Emma Reynolds glanced at the elegantly embossed invitation that had arrived earlier that morning. It was for an exclusive art gala at the prestigious Sinclair Gallery, an event she had dreamed of attending but never had the means or connections to secure an invitation. She had always admired the gallery’s sleek design and the high-caliber artists it showcased. But as much as she loved art, the world of the elite and wealthy often felt like a different universe. "Who would've thought?" she murmured, admiring the invitation's gold detailing. She had thought who could have invited her. After her break up with then boyfriend, she had lived a low life. She didn't want any one to distract or disturb her peace. As an interior designer, she had an eye for beauty, and this was no exception. The paper was thick, the gold lettering crisp, and the design minimalist yet striking. She couldn't help but wonder who had sent it; the envelope had no return address. She wondered. The night of the gala, Emma stood in front of her full-length mirror, adjusting the strap of her sleek, black gown. The dress was a recent splurge, purchased from a boutique she'd wandered into on a whim. She didn't know what the night had in her. She wanted to be at her best. It hugged her figure perfectly, the fabric flowing down to her ankles. She applied a final touch of red lipstick, a shade she rarely wore but felt was fitting for such an event. Her caramel hair was styled in loose waves, cascading over her shoulders. As she slipped on her heels, she felt a mix of excitement and nerves. This was a chance to mingle with some of the city's most influential people, a potential opportunity to expand her design business. The Sinclair Gallery was breathtaking, with its modern architecture and floor-to-ceiling windows. As Emma entered, she was greeted by a symphony of classical music and the soft murmur of conversation. The gallery was filled with New York's elite, all dressed to impress. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the subtle clinking of champagne glasses. Emma felt a little out of place but determined to enjoy the evening. She wandered through the gallery, admiring the modern art pieces on display. Each piece seemed to tell a s********e abstract, others more literal, but all captivating. Emma found herself drawn to a large canvas splashed with vibrant blues and greens. The artist had skillfully blended colors, creating an oceanic scene that was both chaotic and serene. As she stood there, lost in thought, a familiar voice made her freeze in place. "Emma?"She turned, her heart skipping a beat. There, standing before her, was Alexander Hayes. His deep blue eyes, once so familiar, met hers. He looked striking in a perfectly tailored suit, his dark hair neatly styled. Time had been kind to him, but there was an air of confidence and maturity that was new ."Alex," she managed to say, her voice catching slightly. She hadn't seen him in five years, not since their painful breakup after college. He had always been handsome, but now there was a sophistication about him that was undeniably attractive. "It's been a long time," he said, offering her a warm smile. "You look amazing,” he said "Thank you," Emma replied, feeling a mix of awkwardness and nostalgia. "You too. I mean, you look... well."They stood in a brief, awkward silence, the air between them thick with unspoken words and unresolved feelings. Memories flooded back to Emma—late-night study sessions, shared dreams, and the painful day they parted ways. They had been so young, their lives full of potential but heading in different directions. Emma had wanted to carve her own path in the world, while Alex had felt the pressure of his family's expectations. Finally, Alex broke the silence. "I was hoping we could catch up sometime. It's been too long, and I'd love to know what you've been up to ."Emma hesitated, her mind racing. She had built a life she was proud of—her own business, a cozy apartment in the city, and a circle of close friends. But the sight of Alex stirred something deep inside her, a curiosity about how he had changed and whether the spark between them still existed. She can't deny not still loving him. "Okay," she said, surprising herself. "Let's do that. "They exchanged numbers, the act feeling oddly formal given their history. As Emma slipped her phone back into her clutch, she felt a strange mix of emotions. What's he up to? why will they see? The past five years had been a journey of self-discovery and growth, and she wasn't sure she was ready to revisit the past. Yet, a part of her was undeniably curious. As the night continued, Emma found herself glancing over at Alex, who was mingling with other guests. He moved through the crowd with ease, exuding confidence and charm. She noticed how people gravitated toward him, captivated by his presence. It was clear he had become someone important, but she couldn't help but wonder if he was still the Alex she once knew. The evening wound down, and Emma found herself leaving the gallery with more questions than answers. The city was alive with the buzz of nightlife, the cool air refreshing after the warmth of the crowded gallery. As she walked back to her apartment, her heels clicking on the pavement, she couldn't shake the feeling that her encounter with Alex was just the beginning of something much bigger. Little did she know, their chance meeting would lead to a journey of rediscovery, second chances, and a love she thought was lost forever. Can she handle it? She pushed all her thoughts aside. Meanwhile, all she needed was a warm bath and be at the comfort of her bed. Her encounter with Alex will last a lifetime. She got to her apartment, everything was as she left them. She undressed, had a warm bath and got herself ready for bed. It was a memorable night for her.
