THE FIRST COLLISION PART 1
Chapter One: The First Collision Part One — The New Beginning The late summer air was thick with heat and the hum of car engines as Ava Cole stepped out of the cab and onto the cobblestone path that led to Ridgewood University’s main gate. Her entire life fit inside two suitcases. The driver pulled them from the trunk and set them beside her before driving off, leaving Ava standing there with the faint scent of gasoline, her heart thudding harder than it should. Ridgewood University. It looked exactly like the glossy brochure she’d studied a hundred times before applying — ivy climbing up redbrick walls, rows of oak trees shading the walkways, students laughing and dragging suitcases across the quad. This was supposed to be her fresh start. A new life after everything fell apart. Ava adjusted her backpack strap, her fingers brushing against the small silver locket around her neck — the only thing she’d kept from her brother, Ethan. It had been eight months since the accident. Eight months since her world cracked open and swallowed the version of herself who believed life could be simple. She wasn’t here to make friends. She wasn’t here for parties or freedom or whatever college was supposed to mean to people who hadn’t seen loss up close. She was here for one reason: to survive the silence. The campus buzzed with life — music from open dorm windows, laughter from a group of students sitting on the grass. She tried to smile, to blend in, but her chest tightened with the familiar ache that came whenever she thought about how Ethan had once dreamed of this too. Ridgewood was supposed to be his dream before it became hers. “First-year check-in is at the main hall!” a girl called out cheerfully, handing Ava a flyer. Her name tag read Mia – Orientation Team. “Thanks,” Ava murmured, taking it with a polite nod. The girl’s bright blue hair and easy smile made Ava feel like she’d landed on a different planet. She wasn’t used to this kind of open warmth — not after months of therapy sessions and muted condolences. Inside the main hall, the air-conditioning hit her skin like a small mercy. Students were everywhere — signing papers, laughing, hugging, reuniting. She found her assigned dorm, Cedar Hall, Room 308, and began dragging her suitcase toward the elevator. Her roommate wasn’t there yet, which gave Ava a small wave of relief. The room was small but cozy — two twin beds, desks, and a large window that overlooked the quad. She chose the bed by the window and set her locket on the nightstand. For a long moment, she just stood there, breathing in the silence. She should’ve felt excited. Grateful. Instead, she felt like a ghost wandering through someone else’s dream. --- By the evening, Ava had unpacked and even ventured to the cafeteria for dinner. She sat alone, pretending to scroll through her phone while groups of freshmen laughed around her. She overheard talk about parties, professors, and something called The Ridgewood Bash — a huge welcome event happening that weekend. A group of girls from her floor waved her over, but she smiled politely and shook her head. She wasn’t ready for crowds, not yet. Instead, she decided to walk back to the dorms under the setting sun. The air had cooled, the campus glowing gold beneath streetlamps. She didn’t notice the black motorcycle until it roared past her, so close it whipped her hair into her face. “Seriously?” she muttered, stepping back as the rider slowed, the engine growling low like a warning. The guy pulled off his helmet, revealing messy black hair that fell into dark eyes — the kind that didn’t just look at you but through you. His jaw was sharp, his expression unreadable. He didn’t apologize. He just looked at her — long enough for her heartbeat to stumble. Then he smirked. “Watch where you’re walking, princess.” And before Ava could reply, he revved the engine and sped off, the sound echoing against the brick buildings. Her mouth fell open. “Princess?” she repeated, her voice rising in disbelief. So much for a quiet start. She didn’t know it yet, but that was the moment everything changed — the moment the calm surface of her world cracked open again, this time for someone she never should’ve met. Someone like him. --- [End of Part One]
