I stared at the screen.
Evan was sitting in the driver's seat of a car.
I didn't recognize it.
He wasn't wearing the black hoodie anymore.
He had on a gray T-shirt, and his hair looked like he'd been running his hands through it over and over.
He kept looking around.
Like he was making sure nobody was there.
Then he looked at the camera.
"Okay."
He took a deep breath.
"If you're watching this, I need you to listen to me."
I leaned closer to the screen.
"I don't know how much time I have."
He looked toward the driver's side window.
My stomach tightened.
"Evan, what happened?"
He looked back at the camera.
"I found something."
My eyes stayed on the screen.
"What?"
He swallowed.
"I thought it was nothing at first. I really did."
He paused.
"But then I realized it wasn't."
I stared at him.
"What did you find?"
He looked down at his hands.
"I should've told someone."
His voice sounded different now.
Almost like he was trying not to panic.
"But I didn't know who I could trust."
I swallowed.
Then he looked directly at the camera.
"Not even Riley."
I froze.
Me?
What the hell did I have to do with this?
Evan looked away for a second.
Then he looked back.
"If you're watching this, I'm sorry."
I frowned.
"Sorry for what?"
He rubbed his face.
"I didn't mean to involve you."
I sat up straight.
"Involve me in what?"
He didn't answer.
He just stared at the camera.
For a second, he looked like he wanted to say something.
Then he looked toward the window again.
He looked terrified.
My stomach twisted.
What was going on?
What had Evan gotten himself into?
And how was I involved?
I watched the screen, waiting for him to explain.
But instead, he reached toward the camera.
"There's someone—"
The video ended.
I stared at the screen.
"No."
I clicked the video again.
It started from the beginning.
I skipped forward.
Same thing.
It ended at the exact same place.
"Why?"
I clicked around the video, hoping I could somehow get it to continue.
Nothing.
I leaned back and sighed.
What was he about to say?
Who was coming?
And what exactly had he gotten himself involved in?
I looked at the other file.
03
My hand hovered over it.
I wasn't sure I wanted to watch it.
But after everything that had happened tonight, I knew I wasn't going to sleep anyway.
I clicked it.
The screen stayed black.
I waited.
Nothing.
"Seriously?"
I waited another few seconds.
Still nothing.
Then text appeared on the screen.
Just three words.
ASK CAMERON HAYES.
I stared at it.
Cameron?
Why the hell would Evan want me to ask Cameron?
I hadn't spoken to Cameron in weeks.
And as far as I knew, Evan barely spoke to him either.
I reached for my phone.
Then stopped.
Because another line appeared underneath the first one.
HE KNOWS.
