Kat’s POV
Just like that, Mark was gone. A part of me was happy for him but a bigger part was angry. The selfish part of me wished I had never gone looking for her and I allowed myself to feel this way for a few minutes. It didn’t take long for me to get over my selfishness and just miss him.
I was happy he got to experience the mate bond. Just like everybody except me. I made my way back to my room and dropped on my bed. Maybe I should have asked Brandon to complete the rejection and hope to find my second chance mate.
Picking up my phone, I called Brandon without thinking.
“Katrina? Is everything OK?”
“Yeah I just…Never mind..it’s stupid.”
“Nothing you say is stupid.”
His words caused my heart to skip a beat.
“How did the witch hunt go?”
“Not great. But I will find someone that is willing to help me.”
“I know you will.”
I couldn’t help but be disappointed. I wanted to believe he had been spelled. I needed him to be spelled for all of this to make sense to me.
“How are you? You sound upset.”
“I’m not upset, just a little sad because Mark is gone. But it’s good because he found his mate.”
“That is a good thing, but why did he leave? Is his mate a Luna?”
“No. She isn’t a Luna. It’s complicated.”
“I’m sure he will visit as much as he can.”
“I don’t know, but all that matters is he is happy.”
We talked for another half hour and he made my heart skip a beat over and over. Hanging up the phone, I decided to grab lunch and made my way to the kitchen.
“Hey Kat. How are you holding up?” Luna Liv asked when I sat down with her and Alpha Bryan.
“I’m ok. I already miss him.”
“Which him?” Alpha Bryan asks, raising his eyebrows.
“Wwwhat?”
“Mark or Brandon?”
I didn’t know how to respond. I felt as if I was already betraying my Alpha just by talking to Brandon, but I couldn’t stop myself.
“I’ve told you before, I would not be mad if you chose to accept him.” Bryan said with a small smile.
“How did you know?”
Chuckling, he took Luna Liv’s hand and kissed the top. “There is something about spending time with your mate. I noticed the change in you.”
I nodded, understanding. “Can I ask you a question?” I finally managed to say.
“Of course,” Alpha Bryan said.
“Did you find it odd that your father handed over the pack to Brandon right after he marked Meredith?”
Alpha Bryan sat back deep in thought.
“Honestly, not at the time. In fact, I really didn’t think much about it once they said they didn’t have gaps in their memories.”
“Brandon said your father had told you boys for years that he wouldn’t even think of handing over the pack till Brandon turned 30.”
“That’s right, but they also made a huge deal about soulmates, but that didn’t seem to matter when I showed up with Meredith.”
“Doesn’t all of it just seem weird?”
“The entire situation felt off but we could find no proof they were spelled.”
“Is it possible it’s a different kind of spell? One we aren’t as familiar with? Maybe they implanted memories. Is that something witches can do?”
Alpha and Luna looked at each other before Alpha turned back to me.
“We have found that some witches can implant memories, but it’s a very powerful spell and it doesn’t make sense as to why that kind of power would be wasted on a small pack. I wasn’t in line to be an Alpha and how would witches have known Meredith was my mate before hand?”
“So the timeline doesn’t make sense? And the why?”
I couldn’t help but agree. How would a witch know before Bryan found Meredith that they would be mates? She would have needed to be a part of the plan from the beginning.
“I’ve spent years trying to figure out the timeline and the why, but nothing makes sense.”
“I understand.” I said, feeling defeated again.
“What is going on?” Luna Liv asked me.
“What do you mean?”
“Why all the questions?”
“I promised I wouldn’t say,” I said, looking down.
“Why?” Alpha Bryan asked.
“Brandon wants to do this on his own.”
Alpha Bryan smiled and nodded.
“I won’t ask but know if you want help, we are here,” Alpha Bryan said with a smile.
After lunch, I spent the next two hours in the gym before heading back to my room to shower. While getting dressed, my phone pinged with a message.
Brandon: Have dinner with me tonight
Me: I can’t. Sorry :(
Brandon: Why??
I sat back and realized I had no real reason why. I just knew the more time I spent with him the harder it would be if he couldn’t find a witch to help him. What if he did find a witch to help him and the witches confirm he was not spelled.
Me: I don’t think it’s a good idea.
Brandon: It’s just dinner before I fly home.
Me: ok
Shit, did I just say OK? How I wish I could delete a message once sent.
Brandon: Great! I will pick you up in 2 hours.
I didn’t respond. I put my phone down and slightly panicked. My first date with my mate. Or possible mate. Urgh, why did this all have to be so complicated?
I wanted to mind link my sister but she hated Brandon and I didn’t want to hear her tell me I was making a huge mistake. I was on my own.
This was something I could manage. I fixed my hair and left it with its natural curl. Applying a little mascara and lipstick. Now all I had to do was pick an outfit, but I had no idea where we were going. I decided on a simple yellow sundress.
Spinning as I looked in the mirror, I was happy with the final produced. Then I realized I had no idea where to meet him. I picked up my phone and sent him a quick message.
Me: Where should I meet you?
He didn’t respond and I noticed his previous message said he would pick me up. He will be here any minute. I took so long getting ready. Shoot, Shoot, Shoot!
*Mind link
‘Katrina uh Brandon is here to pick you up?’ Luna Liv said, snapping me back to reality.
‘I will be right down.’
