She had no wish to draw attention to herself and she therefore slipped down the secondary staircase she had used before, but at the foot of it instead of taking the passage past the Estate Office, which led to the front of The Castle, she went in the opposite direction. She found, as she expected, that there was a door that led out onto the terrace that overlooked the garden. She saw that the key was in the lock and that there were two bolts. She pulled them back easily and was soon running down the long flight of stone steps. It was too early for the fountain to be playing, for the gardeners had, of course, not yet arrived to turn it on.
