Revelations

Finn’s POV             It was tearing me up inside when I heard what Kayla was saying. It brought me back to the day when she tried to reject me after we'd brought her back from the Moon Lake Pack. She had saved all of us, not knowing if it would have cost her her life, and yet she lived in shame and blamed herself for the things that were done to her. I pulled her as close to me as possible, like my life depended on it, afraid that she would shut herself off and slip away. “You’ve given me more than anyone could ever have, so I don’t ever want you to think about things in that way. If anything, of the two of us, I was the only one really ever in control to have let things happen in another way. But I screwed up because I was stupid, and never has a day gone by when I wish I hadn’t. Now I’m just thankful to the Moon Goddess, and to you, Kayla, for accepting me as your mate and being my Luna.”             My voice was overcome with emotions as I tried to utter how I felt, hoping that she’d understand and stop punishing herself for the past. I felt her slightly nodding and then nuzzling against my chest. Smiling in satisfaction, I leaned in and kissed her forehead gently before we both drifted off to sleep. To my horror, the real nightmare would only begin the next day. I was woken up by Leyton screaming into our mind-link, shouting at me to come to the pack hospital without alarming Kayla. Still half asleep, I gently lifted Kayla’s head off my arms, tucked her properly into bed and begrudgingly got myself ready.             The moment I arrived at the pack hospital, I saw an angry Leyton rushing towards me and before I could find out what was happening, he had grabbed me by the collar and slammed me against the wall. “You bastard! Did you know? Did you know that you had a pup with Lynsie?” He yelled into my face and was about to punch me when Reena came over and soothed him, coaxing him to back down. “Calm down, sweetheart, unless you want everyone, including Kayla to find out about this,” she said warningly. My head spun as I opened my mouth to ask what was going on but I was so confused and shocked that nothing came out. Only then did I realize that Lynsie was also in the room and her eyes were all red from crying.             “I’m sorry, Finn, I’m so sorry. I never meant for you to know. It was an accident from that last night we were together before you left training school. We were both so drunk and forgot about precautions… I forgot too after you left and I just couldn’t bring myself to.. Jacob is my life,” Lynsie sobbed into her hands as she tried to explain. My head was spinning even more now as I tried to understand what she had just said. My legs went soft and I had to sit myself down as I thought of what this meant for Kayla and me. She would never stop me from being a father to my son, but where would that leave her? Especially when she finds out that she could never have a pup again. I was so deep in my thoughts that Reena had to shake me to snap me out of it. “Finn, you need to focus and listen to what I’m saying. Jacob is very sick and he needs a blood transfusion right now to save his life. You’re his biological father so I’d need to draw your blood to test for compatibility,” Renna explained to me sternly. Still dazed from everything that’s happening, I nodded my head and allowed her to do whatever she needed to do.             The blood compatibility test came out positive, and I donated a bag of blood and other samples that Rena needed before being led to the room to see the boy. He looked so small and fragile lying on the bed, and my wolf howled in pain as he recognized our pup. To be honest, the boy looks nothing like me, but I knew better than to doubt my wolf. “I’m sorry, Finn. I wanted to keep this a secret for the rest of my life, but when I found out that Jacob was sick and my bone marrow was not a match, I had no choice but to come to you. I can’t lose him, Finn,” Lynsie grabbed my arm pleadingly as she explained herself. I didn’t want to doubt her, after all, we practically grew up together and it was not her fault alone that we were careless that night. “His name is Jacob?” I asked softly, unsure of what to say and what to do. “Yes, Jacob Knight. Our pack accepted my boy as their own, and I never intended to burden you, especially after I learned that you’ve found your mate. Jacob is six now but he has always been a sickly pup, so he looks younger than his age.” Lynsie’s face lit up when she spoke about our pup.             Our pup             Those two words echoed in my head and pierced my heart like a thousand knives. I was never there for my pup and I’d never imagined that I’d fail my own pup. I’ve sworn to be a better parent after I banished my parents for their betrayal. Yet, here I am, even worse than my own parents. At least they raised me and were there for me when I was a pup. At the same time, how was I ever going to break this news to Kayla? What role will I play in Jacob’s life now and would Kayla ever accept this? As if reading my thoughts, Lynsie spoke up, “If your bone marrow can save Jacob, we will leave right after he has recovered. I won’t tell him about you and it’d be like we’ve never existed. But if you want to be a father to him, I won’t stop you and our pack is not too far away that he can’t come to visit. I won’t let us come between you and your Luna.”             Guilt and shame overwhelmed me as I realized how selfish I was. I was hurting all of them and here was Lynsie trying to figure out the best thing to do. My heart ached for my friend and my pup, and before I knew it, I had pulled Lynsie into a hug. “Thank you, Lynsie, thank you for everything and I promise you that you’re not alone in this anymore. I’m Jacob’s father and I won’t abandon him. I’ll explain it to Kayla and this is not your battle to fight.” Suddenly, a sharp pain gripped my heart and I struggled to breathe. That was when I realized that it wasn’t my pain and I turned to look out of the window to see Kayla standing in the hallway, staring at us through the window. Her face was contorted in shock and pain as she stood rooted to the ground. I quickly let go of Lynsie and ran out of the room to Kayla but it was too late. She had completely shut me off and started running for the forest.
