The questioning.

His broad, warm fingers brush against the bare skin of my shoulder blades, sending a sudden, intoxicating thrill straight down my spine. With practiced, surprising gentle precision, his fingers work through the tight velvet laces, loosening the pressure bit by bit until the restrictive boning gives way and I can finally draw a deep, uninhibited breath. "There," Bram whispers softly into the quiet of the cabin, his hands lingering just a fraction of an inch off my waist as he steps back, his chest rising and falling heavily. "Ten minutes isn't long. Change quickly, Amelisse, before I lose my discipline and throw him overboard myself." "Do you think you could insist that all guild members stay at the safe house while we review the ledgers?" I ask, my voice dropping to a low, earnest whisper as I quickly pull a soft charcoal linen tunic over my head and smooth it down over fitted trousers. "And then find another contract for you and I? Otherwise I will have to go back to the cottage with him, and I'll hardly see you." Bram’s jaw tightens at the mention of the cottage, his dark eyes darkening with a fierce, protective fire. He steps toward me, his large hand coming up to gently cup the side of my face, his thumb lightly stroking my cheek. "Consider it done," Bram rumbles softly, his deep voice carrying an unshakeable promise. "I have every right to mandate a lockdown at the safe house under the guise of processing high-value intelligence. No one leaves until those ledgers are decoded and vetted." He leans down, pressing his forehead against mine, his breath warm against my lips. "And as for the contract, Vane and I already have whispers of a noble estate in the West Reach looking for royal discreet security. I'll make sure it requires both of us. He won't touch you, Amelisse. I won't let him drag you back into that lie." Arden's heavy fist rattles the wooden door from the passage outside. "Ame? Ten minutes are up. You decent?" Bram’s hand slips from my face, He gives me a sharp, knowing nod before stepping back toward the door, turning the heavy iron latch with a loud, deliberate click. Arden steps into the doorway, his eyes lighting up as he sees me out of the restrictive gown, but his smile falters the second he notices Bram standing tall and imposing right inside the cabin threshold. "Commander?" Arden blinks, his brow furrowing as he glances between the two of us. "What are you doing in here?" "Official guild protocol, Arden," Bram says coldly, his broad frame completely blocking Arden's path into the room. "Ame and I were just discussing security measures for our arrival. Orders from the helm: upon docking, all crew and guild members are under mandatory quarantine at the harbour safe house until the Carrion ledgers are fully cataloged." Arden’s jaw drops slightly, a flash of frustration crossing his bruised face. "The safe house? For how long? Ame and I were planning to head back to our cottage as soon as we hit port." "No exceptions," Bram interrupts smoothly, his tone leaving zero room for debate. "High Lord Carrion’s network is vast. Until we know who his contacts are, no one breaks formation. We reach the safe house tomorrow." Arden opens his mouth to protest, looking at me for support, but I merely offer him a tired, helpless shrug, leaning against the vanity table as if completely drained by the night's events. "He is right, Arden," I say softly, keeping my voice mild and detached. "We can't afford any mistakes now." Arden steps inside the cabin, his boots heavy on the floorboards as he casually takes his place beside me at the edge of the washbasin, completely unaware of the storm brewing beneath the surface. Bram sees him step into my space and knows he must leave. We cannot afford a scene, nor can we risk a deadly rift within the guild before Carrion's slave network is completely dismantled. Our affection remains a dark, delicious secret locked in the shadows, and I am far too eager to see just how long Arden thinks he can play his little game with Collette before I pull the rug out from under him. I turn toward Bram, adopting the perfectly polite, slightly detached tone of a princess thanking her dutiful guard. "Thank you for everything, Bram," I say smoothly, giving him a formal, elegant nod. "It was a remarkably successful mission. We will debrief on the ledgers in the morning?" Bram’s jaw twitches imperceptibly, his dark eyes locking onto mine with a burning intensity that makes my pulse spike. "I’ll see you in the morning Ame." Bram rumbles softly, his deep voice carrying an underlying weight meant only for me. Arden unbuckles his leather harness letting it clatter onto the wooden table with a heavy thud. "Finally," Arden grins, letting out a long sigh as he steps toward me and slides his hands around my waist. "I thought he'd never leave. Come here, Ame." I allow him to pull me against his chest, resting my cheek against his leather brigandine with an easy, practiced grace. Listening to the steady thud of his heart, the heart of a man who thinks he's played me for a fool, an icy, thrilling satisfaction settles deep in my bones. I smile softly into the dark leather of his coat, my eyes sharp and calculating in the dim firelight, perfectly playing the part of the devoted lover. "You look exhausted, Ame," Arden murmurs, his fingers gently threading through my dark curls as he leans down to kiss the top of my head. "That keep was a nightmare. I don't know how you stood being so close to Carrion all night." "It took everything I had," I lie smoothly, my voice dripping with sweet, fragile relief as I look up into his eyes. "He was insufferable. But the ledgers are secured, and we're heading straight for the safe house." "Yeah, the safe house," Arden mutters, a trace of annoyance bleeding into his voice as he rests his jaw against my hair. "Bram’s got the whole guild under lockdown the second we dock. No one leaves until those ledgers are cataloged and reviewed. I was hoping we’d be sleeping in our own bed, but I guess we're bunking at the safe house until the Commander gives the all clear." "It's for the best," I whisper softly, letting a quiet, secretive smirk touch my lips where he can't see it. "High Lord Carrion has deep reach. We can't afford a single slip up now." I let him hold me, leaning into his touch just enough to keep his suspicions dead and buried. The lockdown keeps Arden trapped right where I can monitor him, keeps our guild cover airtight, and ensures that my true partner in all of this is never more than a breath away. I look up at Arden, my chin resting lightly against his leather brigandine as I tilt my head with an innocent, inquisitive smile. My voice is smooth, light, and entirely casual, just a curious partner asking about his time away. "So, what were you busy with here while I was at Lord Carrion’s estate for two days gathering intel?" I ask, my thumb idly tracing a seam on his leather lapel. "How did you keep busy?" Arden shifts slightly, his grip on my waist tightening just a fraction before he gives a soft, easy laugh. "Oh, you know, standard guild nonsense. Checking weapon shipments, sharpening blades, helping Vane prep the gear for the vault raid. It was quiet. Tedious, mostly. I missed you." "Did you?" I hum, letting a sweet, thoughtful expression settle over my face. I look into his eyes, holding his gaze with absolute, unblinking clarity as I slip the blade in. "You know, I actually came back on board yesterday, shortly before dinner," I say, my voice dropping into a soft, conversational murmur. "I needed to fetch my cosmetics bag that I forgot to take with me to the keep. But, I couldn't find you." The lie rolls off my tongue like silk. I didn't search for him, I didn't need to. I saw him with my own eyes, pinned against the mess hall table with Collette, her hands in his hair and his lips on her neck. But watching him now, letting him think I merely missed him in the dark corridors, is far more delicious. I watch his face with hawk like precision. Arden’s eyes flicker, just a micro second of a freeze, before his charming, easy going smile snaps right back into place. "Yesterday before dinner?" Arden asks, his tone unbothered, though I feel the sudden, subtle tension in the muscles of his back beneath my palms. "Ah, bad timing, Ame. I was down in the lower hold with Vane sorting through the extra rations and iron spikes. Must have missed you by a minute or two." He leans down, pressing a warm kiss to my forehead, completely unaware that his lie has just sealed his fate. "I wish I’d known you were on board," he murmurs softly against my skin. "I would've held you then, too." I smile into his chest, my dark red lips curving into a cold, triumphant smirk. Vane in the lower hold. A perfect, effortless lie. I gently slide my arms up around his neck, holding him close while my mind quietly adds another mark to the tally. I tilt my head, letting a soft, puzzled hum escape my throat as I pull back just an inch to look directly into his eyes. My expression is a masterclass in naive confusion, innocent, mild, and completely unthreatening. "Vane?" I repeat, my brow furrowing slightly as if I'm genuinely trying to piece together a harmless mix up. "But, he was on the main deck, Arden. I walked right past him near the wheel. He even greeted me and asked if I'd forgotten something for the keep." Arden’s charming smile vanishes for a split second, replaced by a sudden, rigid stillness. The air in the cabin grows tight. I can practically hear the gears turning frantically behind his eyes as he tries to recalculate, his brain scrambling to patch the leak in his story. "Oh, right," Arden stammers, catching himself quickly and letting out a dry, forced chuckle that lacks his usual effortless grace. "Right! Vane was up on deck first, then came down to help me after. I must have mixed up my timeline, Ame. It was a long, chaotic afternoon getting everything prepped for the heist. You know how those ship prep days get." He reaches up, his fingers brushing a dark curl away from my cheek in a gesture meant to soothe and distract, but I can feel the slight tremor in his hand. The effortless liar is starting to sweat. "Ah, of course," I say softly, offering him a sweet, understanding smile that completely masks the icy contempt surging through me. "It's easy to lose track of time when everyone is rushing around." I rest my hand lightly against his chest, feeling his heart beating a little faster now. He thinks he’s cleared the hurdle. He thinks he’s gotten away with it. "I'm just glad you were focusing on the mission," I murmur, laying my head back against his shoulder and closing my eyes. "We all need our rest tonight. Tomorrow at the safe house is going to be intense." "Yeah." Arden mutters, his voice quieter now, his hand resting on my back as he stares blankly at the cabin wall, visibly rattled by how close he just came to the edge. I let out a soft, contented sigh against his leather brigandine, hiding the sharp, victorious smile curling my lips. I have him right where I want him, nervous, off balance, and blissfully unaware that I hold every single card.
