The ledgers.

1659 Words
The pale, grey light of dawn bleeds through the cabin's small porthole as the ship's timbers groan against the harbor pilings. The heavy thud of coiled ropes hitting the wooden docks below signals our arrival. Before Arden even finishes buckling his leather harness, a sharp, authoritative knock echoes against the oak door. Knock. Knock. "All hands on deck for transport!" Bram’s booming voice carries down the narrow passageway, clear, direct, and unyielding. "The harbor is clear, but we move in strict formation to the safe house. Move!" Arden shoots the door a sullen look, running a hand over his jaw where a dark purple bruise has settled nicely overnight. "No rest for the weary," he grumbles, offering me a tired, reassuring smile as he opens the door. "Come on, Ame. Let's get this lockdown over with." We step out onto the main deck into the crisp, sea salted morning air. The harbor is blanketed in a thick, rolling mist perfect cover for our arrival. The Blackhand crew is already moving with disciplined, quiet efficiency, hauling crates and securing weapons under Vane's watchful eye. Bram stands at the top of the gangplank, looking every inch the formidable veteran in his dark, silver trimmed assassin's brigandine. Though the Blackhands don't carry formal military titles or rank, Bram’s natural authority and sharp mind mean the entire crew falls in line the moment he speaks. "Ame," Bram acknowledges with a short, familiar nod as Arden and I approach. His dark eyes cut sharply to Arden, cold and steady. "Arden, grab the secondary supply chest and fall in with the rear guard. I want two men on every perimeter angle as we move through the harbor district." Arden's jaw clenches at taking orders, but under Bram’s iron gaze and with the crew listening, he knows better than to argue. "Understood," he mutters, stepping away to heave a heavy iron-bound crate onto his shoulder. As Arden walks off toward the rear, Collette catches my eye from near the mainmast. She stands holding a bundle of cloaks, looking flustered and anxious, her eyes darting nervously between Arden and me. I offer her a sweet, serene nod, watching her flush with uncomfortable guilt before she quickly averts her gaze. Bram steps closer to me as the crew prepares to disembark, his broad frame shielding our exchange from the rest of the deck. His voice drops into a barely audible rasp meant for my ears alone. "The safe house is secured, Ame," Bram murmurs, his dark eyes burning into mine for a fleeting, intense second. "The cellar vault is locked, the sentries are posted, and the perimeter is sealed. No one leaves until we say so. The ledgers are waiting for us in the main study." "A masterwork, Bram," I whisper back, my lips curving into a soft, secretive smile as I pull my dark cloak around my shoulders. "Let's move," Bram says aloud to the group, gesturing down the gangplank toward the cobblestone alleyways leading into the safe house district. The heavy oak door of the safe house study clicks shut, cutting off the low murmur of the crew in the main hall outside. The room is dimly lit, smelling of old parchment, dried ink, and rain-dampened stone. Bram places the thick, iron bound ledger onto the dark mahogany desk, but his focus immediately shifts from the stolen intelligence to me. He pulls out a high backed leather chair, guiding me down into it before dragging a second chair right alongside mine. He sits so close that his broad shoulder brushes against mine, the dark leather of his brigandine rustling softly in the quiet room. Without saying a word, his large, warm hand reaches out and slides over mine, his long fingers lacing through mine with effortless familiarity. His thumb begins a slow, mesmerizing stroke across my knuckles. "Safe and sound, Ame," Bram murmurs, his voice dropping into a deep, velvety rasp that sends a shiver straight down my neck. His dark eyes trace the curve of my jaw, completely stripped of his disciplined front. "No High Lords, no royal disguises, and no lying scum breathing down your neck." "And no heavy silk dresses," I reply with a soft, breathy chuckle, leaning in slightly until my shoulder rests firmly against his. I turn my hand in his grip, letting my fingertips lightly trace the faint scar running along the back of his wrist. "Though I think you enjoyed watching me struggle with that corset back in the cabin." A low, wicked smirk touches Bram's lips, his eyes darkening with a slow burning heat. "Can you blame me? Watching you play Carrion like a fiddle while wearing gold and silk was pure torture. It took every ounce of my self-control not to pull you out of that room right then and there." "You hid it well, my hero," I tease, my lips curving into a mischievous smile as I lean closer, my face inches from his. "Especially when you nearly broke Arden's jaw for putting his hands on me." "That," Bram rumbles, his thumb pressing gently into the center of my palm, "was entirely professional necessity. But I'd do it again in a heartbeat if he gets too close to you." "A dedicated protector," I whisper, tilting my head toward him. "I might have to make sure you're assigned to all my future contracts." Bram’s grin softens into something fiercely possessive, his gaze dropping to my lips. Thud. Thud. Thud. The sudden, rhythmic heavy tread of several pairs of boots echoes down the stone corridor outside, heading straight for the study door. In a fraction of a second, the intimate heat vanishes. Bram smoothly lets go of my hand, sliding his chair back a respectable distance with practiced, liquid grace. By the time the brass door latch turns, he is leaning back, arms loosely crossed, looking every bit the sharp, calculating Blackhand veteran casually reviewing a book. I immediately straighten my spine, dipping a quill into an inkwell as if engrossed in the first page. The door swings open. Vane steps in first, his sharp eyes scanning the room, followed closely by Arden, who is still gingerly touching his bruised jaw, and Collette, who lingers nervously near the threshold, her hands wringing the hem of her dark tunic. "Well?" Vane asks, leaning against the doorframe with a wide, eager grin. "What did High Lord Carrion hide in those vault books, Ame? Is it enough to tear his network apart?" Arden steps further into the room, his eyes instantly darting to me with a protective, possessive flicker before cutting over to Bram. "Yeah, Ame. We've been locked in this safe house for hours. Tell us we got what we came for." I look up from the open ledger, offering them a cool, triumphant smile that hides the lingering electricity still humming beneath my skin. "We didn't just get what we came for," I say smoothly, tapping my quill against the heavy parchment page. "We have every buyer, every supply route, and every corrupted official on Carrion's payroll right here." "Good. So can we leave then?" Arden asks impatiently, crossing his arms and leaning heavily against the edge of the mahogany desk. His striking golden eyes flick between me and the thick stack of ledgers, his jaw tight. I set my quill down with a deliberate, echoing clack against the wood, turning my head to look up at him with a slow, icy stare. "Are you in a rush, 'Den?" I ask, my voice smooth, quiet, and dangerously level. "We are trying to dismantle a whole network of corrupt lords and monarchy. It doesn't happen overnight." "We have a home we are meant to return to, Amelisse!" Arden snaps back, his golden eyes flashing with frustration as he steps closer, gesturing vaguely toward the door. "Have you forgotten the cottage?" The room falls dead silent. Vane shifts his weight near the doorframe, his grin vanishing, while Collette shrinks further back into the shadows near the wall. Bram doesn't move a muscle, but the air around him turns to absolute frost, his dark eyes locked onto Arden like a predator measuring its prey. "No, I have not forgotten the cottage, Arden," I say, my voice dropping an octave as I rise slowly from my chair, holding his intense, amber gaze with unyielding force. "But people's lives and freedom are being sold against their will." Arden opens his mouth to cut in, but the raw, lethal conviction in my posture halts him in his tracks. "I know what that's like," I continue, stepping around the desk until I stand directly before him, my chin lifted high. "My father beat me into submission and sold me off to a king. A ruthless, tyrant of a king, for something as stupid as power. To strengthen his kingdom." I take one more step forward, forcing his golden eyes to lock with mine as the truth of who I am, and what I will never tolerate again, fills every corner of the quiet study. "You can return to the cottage if you want, Arden," I tell him softly, my tone carrying the finality of a drawn blade. "But I am not leaving until I have completely destroyed their network and freed every single soul bound in their chains." Vane lets out a low, appreciative whistle from the door, nodding in grim approval, while Arden stands frozen, those bright golden eyes wide as he struggles to find a response that doesn't make him look like a coward in front of the entire group. “Oh and you know what Den, I was going to keep this to myself and try see how stupid you really think I am, but I’m growing tired of it now. I saw you and Collette practically consume each other on the mess hall table. That’s right, I saw you, so feel free to take her back to the cottage with you.”
