Chapter 1
I unlocked the latch on the old white fence gate and walked into the backyard, I turned back around to lock it again, getting another look at the chipped paint. I grimaced, it really needs to be painted over again I thought, maybe I'll do it sometime. I stored the thought in the back of my mind to get back to later and continued to walk deeper into the backyard, passing the fire pit grandmother and her coven members of the Forest Grove Coven occasionally used to celebrate, dancing, singing around the fire.
I continued to walk along the stone path way and to the place I know my grandma is, her herb garden. I reached the garden which is locate near the back of the house. Its quite remarkable really every where you look you can see herbs growing, yarrow, basil, sage, tansy, yarrow and others, all in organized patches. I spotted my grandmother's figure, aka Arlen Fae, bent over some plants. She is dressed in raggedy clothing that she usually wears for gardening and her hair is up out of her face.
"Hello, Grandma. How is it that every time I see you, you are tending to your plants?" I joked in a greeting. She stood up straight and turned to me with a smile. She is wearing gloves and is carrying her white handled Athame which is used for harvesting herbs.
"Hello Iris, you do know how much I love my plants," she said with a smile. "You're here early, did you do your homework?"
"Don't worry I didn't get any homework today thankfully," I reassured her. Okay, truthfully, I do have homework but its only a double-sided math sheet which is easy. She narrowed her eyes suspiciously but dropped the subject.
"Does your mother know you are here?" she asked as she brushed the dirt from her pants. I shook my head.
"I phoned her and told her I'm staying the night at Amara's house," I said. My best friend, Amara Rose, who is an awesome person and will cover for me if mom phones asking for me. I made a mental note to buy her a pizza or something later. She sighed.
"I do wish you wouldn't lie to your mother like that," she told me. I raised an eyebrow.
"You know what she would say, she would tell me I can't practice witchcraft and I wouldn't be able to visit you anymore," I told her. She looked away to gaze at the forest behind the fence.
I know..." she murmured sadly to herself.
"So, it's the full moon tonight, are we doing the normal celebration? I brought out my black handled athame and grimoire," I changed the subject to why I'm here and pointed to my bag to make my point. Every full moon I make up some excuse to mom and her husband Joseph, then come here (luckily its not far from my house). We would bake moon cakes, light a fire and throw some food into the fire as offerings to the gods and goddesses. We would do spells for good luck. Grandma said its important for every witch in training to celebrate the moon.
"I have decided that you are ready to meet my coven," she told me. My eyes widened.
"Are you sure?" I asked nervously. She smiled fondly.
"Yes, and don't worry for you dear. No one is expecting you to join," she answered. I sighed in relief. Then she wriggled her eyebrows. "And anyways, I hear Maya is bringing her son." I rolled my eyes.
"Will they be coming here?" I asked, still slightly nervous.
"No, I will finish gathering theses herbs for the celebration then we will go," she told me. I nodded and she went back to the herbs. My mind started to wander back to when I first learned grandma was a witch.
"Do you fly around on a broom stick?" I had asked her.
"No dear, sadly I am not able to fly," she has answered with a laugh.
"I'll go get everything I need from inside and meet you out front," grandma's voice pulled me out of my thoughts. She is now carrying herbs in a basket with the athame laying on top.
"Okay," I agreed. She smiled an walked into the house through the back door. I started to walk back to the gate when a blue light caught the corner of my eye. I stopped walking and turned to see what it is but as soon as I turned it was gone. My eyebrows pressed together in confusion. What the heck was that? I thought, looking around, but I can't seam to find whatever it was. Giving up, I turned back around and continued to walk. I reached the gate and unlatched it. Just as I stepped out of the backyard in the corner of my eye I caught sight of the same blue light hovering, this time however I saw small wings attached.
.....
Grandma stopped the car in the driveway behind some other cars. The house that is sitting in front of us looks old, the white paint is chipped and one of the windows is broken. Everywhere around it is forest. This place in in the middle of no where, it took us half an hour just to get here. It doesn't look like anyone is home, all the lights are off.
"Everyone is in the forest out back," grandma said, as if reading my thoughts. Which, I'm not sure if she can or not. She stepped out of the car, carrying the bag full of herbs, her grimoire, and her black handled athame. I got out as well and slipped my own black handled athame into my jacket pocket. I followed her around to the back of the house. There is a trail, lit by hanging lanterns, leading deeper into the forest until I can't see the lights. It looks like something from a fairy tale.
"Come on," she said and started to walk to the start of the trail. I followed her along the trail, it's the perfect night for a full moon; there isn't a cloud in the sky so nothing except for the branches are covering the moon or stars. I also smell stood, like fall always does.
A few minutes later a big light started to appear through the darkness, the light of a fire. I can hear voices and music coming in that direction. I swallowed my nervousness and followed her into the clearing. In the clearing is the fire were the light is coming from. Pagan music is coming from what looks like a Bluetooth speaker (way to go twenty first century) and both men and women are dancing, talking, laughing and smiling. Then my eye caught the figure of a teenage boy with brown hair and green eyes, he looks around my age, standing along; but it doesn't seam to affect him because he is still grinning and slights moving to the music.
He looks my way, surprised but none the less he smiled at me, I smile back, a slight blush creeping up my face. He must be Maya's son that grandma was talking about. A woman dressed in back with a pentacle necklace, who looks to be my mothers age, approached us. She smiled warmly at us.
"Hello Arlen," she greeted grandma respectfully. Then she looked to me. "You must be Iris, Arlen's granddaughter. Merry meet, I am the coven's priestess Maya." I smiled.
"Merry meet," I greeted back.
"I am glad you could come," she said.
"I am to," I said back truthfully, I am glad I came. She turned to look at the boy and waved him over. He came to stand beside her.
"This is my son, Codin," she introduced him.
"Ah, so this is the young man I was telling my granddaughter about," grandma said, looking from him then to me. My eyes widened and Codin blushed ever so slightly. Do you have like no cool whatsoever! I thought to grandma, even though she can't here my thoughts, can she?
"Its nice to meet you," Codin said and reached out his hand for me to shake. I am beginning to like this boy even more. I shook his
"Me too, I'm Isis," I introduced myself.
"I'm Codin," he said. Then blushed. "But I, um, guess you already know that." He laughed nervously.
"Arlen, could you come help me cast a circle around the clearing? Now that everyone is here," Maya asked.
"Of course," grandma said. She looked at me. "We'll leave you to get to know each other." Her and Maya started to walk off but not before she turned back around and winked. My face started to grow hot with embarrassment.
"Whoa, your grandma is not at the least bit subtle," Codin observed. I nodded.
"Sadly," I said gravely. He chuckled. Okay, awkward silence. "So, you practice witchcraft?"
"Is it that obvious?" he joked, looking down at his dark clothing and pentagram necklace I just realised he is wearing. "But yeah, I've been practicing since I was ten, being raised with it probably helps. How about you?"
"Thirteen for me, two years. But I can't practice openly at home, my mom doesn't know and would stop me if she found put. So, my grandma teaches me," I told him. He nodded.
"Thirteen for me, two years. But I can't practice openly at home, my mom doesn't know and would stop me if she found put. So, my grandma teaches me," I told him. He nodded.
"I'm positive my mother would have mentioned you, is this your first time celebrating the full moon with the coven?" he asked. I nodded. He grinned.
"Same here. Well I'm glad that I wont be the only one that's round my age," he said. He turned his head and I followed his gaze to everyone gathering around the fire. "Let's sit down near the edge of the clearing." I nodded. I followed him to the edge of the clearing and sat down beside him with my knees up to my stomach. I looked out at the rest of the coven members around the fire. The music has changed to a toone that I know but I don't remember the name of. I smiled.
"I love this love song," I murmured more to myself then anyone, but Codin must of heard it.
"It is pretty good isn't it," he agreed. I looked from the fire to the sky, from here you can see the sky clearly. The moon is defiantly full, and bright. I closed my eyes, my face facing the moon. Its relaxing, with the smell the night always gives off and the music. Power from the moon is coming of it in waves, coming drown to me. I let out a relaxed sigh.
"You can feel the power too, can't you?" Codin's voice pulled me out of my trance like state. I opened my eyes and looked over at him to see his eyes closed also and face towards the moon. His face is lit with the light of the fire and moon. I admit he's not exactly bad looking.
"Yeah, I can," I told him. His eyes opened and looked over a me with a smiled. I smile shyly an looked back over at the coven. They have started to sing along with the song, now that I think about it maybe they where always singing along.
Grandma turned from the fire to look at us. She waved us over, singling for us to join them. I looked over at Codin to see him standing up. I stood up too. I nervously followed him over to the fire where they are standing in a circle around the fire As I walk closer I can feel the energy and power from the fire. The song continued.
"Come and join the circle," grandma invited us with a smile and moved so we can join the witches of the cover. Doing as she said we joined the circle with her at my left and Codin at my right. She faced the fire once again and started singing and I found myself singing too.
"...As we will, so mote it be," as the song came to an end I felt a rush of power.
"Everyone join hands," Maya said. Everyone joined hands. I looked at grandma but took her hand. I looked over at Codin and he held out his hand for me to take. Ignoring my fast beating heart, I took his hand. His hand is warm against mine.
"Goddess and God of many names we call you here! Join our celebration in music, magic and love," Maya called, her voice raising. A burst of warm air rushed past me, I looked over at Codin he looks like he felt it to. It feels like some over worldly presence is here. When me and grandma would call the Goddess and God it felt like this except this is much more powerful. "Welcome Iris and Codin, two young witches who wish to follow the old path. Please bless them with your guidance and knowledge as they grow, and protect them."
I gasped in surprise as a rush of power entered me, causing my body to shake slightly. I feel stronger. Codin must have felt it to because I felt the sudden pressure of him squeezing my hand in surprised. I looked over at him to see his mouth open in a silent gasp. As this is going on the fire has spiked up, its so high its taller then me. I can feel the immense power and heat radiating off it. Then it died down until I could jump over it if I wanted to. Everyone is stepping back from the fire and letting go of hands but me and Codin didn't let go for whatever reasons.
"You and Codin jump over the fire to symbolize you starting into the path," grandma said to us with a proud smile. My eyes widened, jump over the fire? Are they crazy? I thought. She leaned down to whisper in my ear. "Don't worry the fire wont hurt you, and we have water near bye." I looked over at Codin and he smiled at me reassuringly. I gulped nervously.
"Well, you only live once," I murmured to myself. One last look at Codin and we jumped through the flames. As I passed though the flames my nervousness and fear evaporated, instead, replaced with excitement.
I started to laugh as soon as I gained my footing on the ground. Codin is grinning.
"Well that was fun," I couldn't stop myself from saying. He nodded in agreement.
"I should jump over fire more often," he exclaimed with a laugh. I smiled.
"Come on you two, come eat some moon cakes," grandma said and started to walk to where everyone else is standing, eating small moon shaped cakes. I started walking over and realize that I'm still holding Codin's hand. I blushed. He let go.
"Oh, sorry. Forgot," he apologized. I smiled slightly.
"Its okay," I said, part of me wishing that he didn't let go, but I shoved those thoughts and feelings back. He started to walk to where everyone is gathered and I quickly followed suite. Grandma smiled at me and handed me a cake then Codin one.
"May Goddess and God watch over us and send blessings until the next full moon," Maya said. "Blessed be."
"Blessed be," everyone else said and took a bite of their moon
"Blessed be," I whispered to the night and took a bite.
